  • i kinda want a mandolin now. i play guitar and bass, and i think this is next :P

  • I opened this up in two new windows by accident, and one started slightly after the other (but perfectly in time, I think it came in at the first beat of the second bar), so a few seconds in I was thinking 'fffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuu... how is he doing all that with one mando!!!', then I copped on. Sounded great, like Planxty's intertwining mando and bouzouki lines. I can't repeat it though :(

  • So did the red haired boy get his soul back?

  • @divinegod102 he lost it?

  • @fastabulus gingers dont have souls =) ( no ofensive just some people saying it)

  • @fastabulus Nevah!

  • I have the same mandolin :0

  • @Inayaw, thx, I rock-climb, so that's where ebing skinny and having the odd arm tendon comes from. Your local climbing gym will be full of people with arms just like mine ;-)

  • So, don't be too creeped out, and I liked the music and all, but your hands and your visible arm were to die for. Like. Seriously. Sexy sinewy. Uh. Have a nice day.

  • wow!! you're AMAZING!!! love mandolines :)

  • awesome video sir. Was wondering if you had any advice for someone looking to learn more celtic standards on mandolin and guitar. I know how to play the insturnments, i just wanted to know of maybe some good songs or tab sites. i would greatly appreciate it.

  • @hamdigidy There is no such thing as "celtic" music. Irish and Scottish trad are different, as is Wlesh choral music etc. HOWEVER...if you like this music (Irish trad) you can go to thesession for Irish stuff, or to mandolincafe for mando tab (they have an Irish section). (google; youtube won't let me post links)

  • world music ftw

  • what a diverse video.

  • Try an F/Style!!!

  • @TheFretted why?

  • It's exactly the same tune as the Irish traditional "The Beggarman"!

  • They are the same song

  • dude this is multi-cultural!

  • I love how deep the body is on that flatbacked mandolin. How did you come across this instrument?

  • Bought it in Mexico in '91, int he town of Paracho, where every other store is a luthier's. Lots of the Latino luthiers (and not just in Mexico) make jthese deep-bodied ones. It's a piece of crap, though-- my $180 Chinese Rover is a MUCh better instrument.

  • @fastabulus Unfortunately I´m agree with you; I´m from México and is really hard & dificult for to find a good quality mandolin in my country. All of them make excellent quality guitars, but the other instruments are very bad quality.

  • @fastabulus how much did this one cost you?

  • @fastabulus I'll take it if you don't want it. :)

  • thats an ugly mandolin but nice song lol

  • witch is harder banjo or Mandolin

  • depnds on the size of your fingers, methinks. ok banjo joke:

    Q: What's the difference between a banjo and a Harley-Davidson?

A: You can tune a Harley.

  • If anyone is interested i have an identical mandolin i am selling for $100 message me.

  • This makes me want to play the mandoin SOOOOO bad :)!

  • Great job on a great song! One of my fav's!

  • i totally know this song. makem and clancy sang it.

  • hey i've been looking for this tune for ages! what is it called??!

  • oh sorry that was a stupid question...

  • I see no red hair

  • The song is called red-haired boy.

  • LAWL

  • I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who's positioned as such when i play my mando. I also don't have a strap, but i find it much more easy to play with the butt of the instrument resting against my thigh. keeping it up highter makes me feel fat, haha

  • reallllyy good =D, but the only thing annoying me is ur leg banging to the beat -.-

  • What's wrong with that? It helps with keeping tempo.

  • cause you hear "poof, poof, poof, poof"

  • ...the stop is traditional. get out.

  • stomp***

  • stop sucking his dick, I said it was "reallly good", except for his leg banging. What's wrong with saying that. Nobody's gonna change my mind so I don't know what's the point of getting all harsh, "get out"

  • thanks, whitehead. you shoudl hear me play it on my F-9...even faster! which is silly, as speed is not of the essence in Irish music.

  • lol nice job man!

    you really mastered this song!

  • Nice job. I've been working on this, but I'll never be able to play it up to that speed. Good work.

  • how about chinese cheese dicks?

  • ha ha

    both are yellow and small

    sorry

  • lol he isnt a red haired boy , the song hes playing is called red haired boy lol

  • Great song, great playing.

  • A little culture mix world class music 4*

  • nice vid, but why did u put red haired ...

  • It's called "Red Haired Boy"

  • yeah i personally like the sound of the mexican mandolin.

and anyone know where could i find tabs/sheet music for this song because i've been trying to play it by ear but i'm kind of stuck...

  • Yeah i would like the same ! i didnt even tried to play it by ear :)) haha

Red-Haired Boy you are great! :)

  • can you send me the tabs for this?

its really cool and im just picking up the mandolin

    please?

  • Yeah, can anyone suggest a website with this tab?

  • wow that sounds friggin sweet bro, 5* for an irish song on a mexican mandolin it still sounds awesome haha

  • thanks, marter713

  • why do have to be rich to play music

    you dont need anything fancy

    its music have fun

  • How do you tune your mandolin? I have one quite similar, but when I try to tune it in G, D, A, E, it kinda seems too tight, and it even ... i don't know how to say it in english, but the tuning doesen't hold..., the strings get out of tune, maybe because it's too tight..?

  • What kind of tuners do you have, or, rather, what brand of mandolin? You may need to tighten the tuners.

  • It is a Gilb... I don't know if it's a good brand or anything. I bought it in a guitar store in mexico in february.

  • What type of mandolin are you playing? It looks a lot like my mexican hand-made mando...

  • yea it's Mexican. made in Paracho, Mexico circa 1991 by David Soto Valencia. it didn't handle coming to Canada very well; it warped, doesn't tune right, etc. ow I play an F-9 and I have a great (no, awesome $180) Chinese beater for travel.

  • Ummm... I think you're... "confused"

  • Ummm... I think you're... "confused"

  • cos when you're a student, you have $100 and you are travelling through Mexico, a $100 mando is what you get!

  • Nice one mate!

    Cheers

  • It doesn't have a strap. Also I was sitting on a futon which has a not-quite flat sitting surface, so you end up spreading your legs to keep yourself sitting straight. I can't play an instrument leaning back cos my leg always seems to be tapping.

  • i bought myself a Martin Backpacker (guitar), and it's very similar. the physical dynamics of these guys are quite different from a (normal-size) guitar. playing it while sitting down is incredibly difficult; the angle is different, and you can't set it on your lap (or get your knee up high enough) because it's not tall enough and the bottom string keeps hitting your leg. and the weight dynamics make it weird to play; the head weighs more than the body. i prefer standing up w/ a strap.

  • that first comment...LOL!

  • can you not read that he said he is austrian-canadian? personally i didnt notice, i was concentrating on the mandolin playing, not his crotch

  • Boy,You is on fire!

  • coool

  • is this in an alternate tuning?

    beautiful sustain by the way

  • no, it's in standard mandolin tuning-- GDAE from lowest pitch to highest. The reel is played (here) in A mixolydian although at sessions people also play it in D mixolydian and bluegrass players have a different mode for it.

  • I wish I could play that good!!!!!

  • There's way better mando players than me out there-- look at Jim Richter's version of "Tanyards"-- but thanks for the compliment!

  • Your mando has a cool folky sound! I love this reel; good work!

  • I'm was just learning this song on Mandolin but in the wrong key!! Thanks for setting me straight (c: Also you add about 300 more notes than I use.

  • Really, you can play it in any key. I know it in G and A. I learned it in A, but then someone asked me to jam it with them in G, so I had to re-learn it. That was tough because it messed up the fingering. Probably a good excercise to learn in multiple keys.

  • ah. a fellow red haired mandolinist.

though i dont have quite as much experience as you.

    Love celtic music

what's the name of that piece?

  • The *tune* is called "Red Haired Boy," or "Johnny Dhu" or "The Little Beggarman" depending on which set of lyrics you sing with it.

  • Heyy... Do u have a tab for this song?? I did'nt find it on the Internet :-)

    You ehh... Rock?

  • The little beggerman, isnt it

  • I am a little beggarman and a beegin i hav been!!! Loooove dis tune, no all de words!!! :D Go on ye bai ye! lol

  • Very Good ¡¡¡

  • Danny Pearl must have loved the Jolly Beggarman :) lol

    good job! keep posting!

  • The tune always known in Ireland a The Beggarman or Johnny dhu, well played.

  • This song has another name-- DANNY PEARL'S FAVORITE. Pearl was the guy who the Taliban beheaded cos he was Jewish. He was a trad music afficionado and this was apparently one of his favorites. So you can remember him by calling it "Danny Pearl's Favorite."

  • I think it is best to remember it by it's original name. Journalists are opportunists and often shameless by nature, and most who travel to dangerous areas understand the risks. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. No need to change the name for someone looking for fame, when the man who came up with the melody was just a regular guy who minded his own business.

  • Sounds nice and open. I think the flat mandolins have a more pleasing sound to them.

  • I got that mando in Mexico, in Paracho, where there about hudnreds of luthiers selling everything from $50 beater guitars to $2000 mandolins. Amazing place.

  • I like how deep the body is.

  • Pretty good. Same tune as the "Little Begger Man"
