Hesitance in cancelling the takeoff clearance is not the main problem. The main problem is clearing 9DR to position and hold on the very same runway where you've just cleared a takeoff. What really baffles me is telling 9DR about the traffic landing on the intersecting runway but forgetting about the traffic taking off.
Did anyone else notice the terribly written closed captions "from" the controller? "Blue Streak 390 280 at 6 on my 18 Left cleared for takeoff." It should read "Blue Streak 390 Wind 280 at 6 Runway 18 Left cleared for takeoff"
@paranoma87 Nah, I think she just couldn't remember the plane's call sign in that moment of panic. You'll see the same stuttering reaction from many other controllers in similar situations. It's not good, granted, but it's a very human thing to do. When you see a plane crash about to happen, you're not thinking "Blue Streak 390, cancel takeoff clearance," you're thinking "STOP!" It takes a very disciplined mind to issue by-the-book instructions in a split-second crisis.
The RJ had already started to reject the takeoff before the alarm went off and the controller told them to abort. They could obviously see the PC-12 pulling out on the runway ahead of them.
Coming from a retired Air Traffic Controller WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES WERE ALL HUMAN NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO THEM. "human factors" Granted as it be ATC is a bad place to make mistakes. When your under those kinds of condition like i'm sure she was under. You have a tendency to become speechless, loss of thoughts/words, and or just freeze up because you can't believe whats happening. Many things are gong through your mind in a couple seconds; will I still have my job, what will everyone think of me ext
@fordairport Unfortunately some of us with the different jobs we hold, are not afforded the same understanding when we make a mistake. Some people just aren't allowed to make them. It would be one thing if it was a "smaller" mistake but this one was pretty bad, I think you'd at least agree with that.
She needs to get the boot, she could barely say cancel the takeoff! if you cant handle the job sweetie go do something that doesnt require you to think quickly!
@pzoccali Then explain why it's a good idea to grant jobs and promotions to people LESS qualified (i.e. scoring lower on tests) based upon the most objective assessment availalble. Not sure you understand how affirmative action works, but you should be aware of this if you live in the USA. Ignorance prevents change. Educate!
Alright Im an Air Traffic Controller for the air force at eglin air force base/fort walton beach airport in florida and I just got checked out of flight data and I can cancel a take off clearance 5times better then that...how does she have a rating?
We have a newly certified controller where I work, that says she doesn't like working local (tower) control. I guess the supervisor that checked her out should have listened to her trainers when they said don't check her out. Instead he decided to check her out. I mean really check her out, if you know what I mean. I guess being a supervisor does pay.

Get her out of the tower and back in the kitchen!

If that's a small PC-12, I can't help but wondering what a big PC-12 looks like.

The controller sounds as if she is hesitant to even issue a takeoff cancellation, which shouldn't be the case.

Riiiight...it can't be because she's a moron and almost killed a few folks. It's the system's fault and she just needs more training....riiiight.

The description says, "A frantic air traffic controller". She didn't sound frantic to me.
Frantic would be, "STOP!!! LOOK OUT!!! OH MY GOD!!!

She even froze when trying to tell him to reject the takeoff. Wow. It's amazing the RJ understood her when she told him to abort.

Affirmative action at its best.

Why is it so often that women are involved in these incidents. Affirmative action is not a good idea.
