she was living out of her car bf she was discovered. Jewel has lost a lot of her earthiness which was appealing because it made her feel down to earth and approachable. But apparently her mgt. wanted to promote her to a wider audience, and did a glammmed-up makeover which i feel, does not suit her.
I understand what you say, but I don´t think she was made into a pop artist by anyone. You know, people grow, people change. And it makes sense that someone like her would put into her work new parts of herself.
Personally I do like her new look and her music too. I´ve been a fan since her first album and still like her, her lyrics and songs (beyond what gender of music it is) are still amazing and very personal. I don´t think she´s "commercial" at all. She still is a whole artist.
Perhaps I am not as intimate nor knowledegable with the content of her new material (post-first album) as I should be, however I am strictly basing my claims solely on her stylist's choices in appearance and dress, including make-up- this alone is enough for me to be convinced that she's not driving her own car, so to speak. It's a business like anything else, you have to adapt to change, rather than have it adapt to you.
I think that people don´t aloud celebrities to behave like any normal person. If I listen to country music and later I become interested in "comercial music", it´s fine, but a famous singer can´t change his tastes in music or work with another famous singer without being called "sold out"
And any ordinary girl can start wearing make up and stylish clothes and look completely different from 5 years ago, while celebrities can´t without being called "false"
but how do you know where this change comes from? all I am saying is that it was a drastic change for her which was shocking to me. I see nothing but a mariah carey figureine at a closer look AND jewels eyes, her expression, her face -she looks awkward and uncomfortable. she could have easily taken on a more earthy persona, kept at it, but it seemed that it was more abusiness decision than one which came from her only.
I understand. And I totally respect your opinion, of course.
To me, I think it came from her, from her fame, from her new experiences from life. She started to make money, to go out, to have parties and a night life, and it was just a matter of time. She started as a country girl but she discovered a whole different life. All that changes you, makes you evolve.
And I think she looks sexy as hell and more aware of her body which is good, cos inside she´s still herself, the sweet girl we love.
one must look at statistics and data to determine what motivated her to change her image. I'm going to have to disagree with you about this natural evolution process. Look at the album sales of her first album compared to the next, the next, then look at her record company (did she hop around companies?) look at her stylists and other artists on same label, etc. & most importantly LOOK AT the change in her music.
I´m a singer and a songwriter. I started to write with my guitar, folk songs. Now I´m writing hip hop. And I don´t even have a record deal. Why if a regular guy can like many different genders of music a famous artist can´t. People don´t aloud them to. They can be this or that, folk or pop, simple or diva, but not both. But nobody is only one thing.
And also, in her last record she has songs like Cowboy Waltz and Rosy and Mick, and she has been singing this song for many many years.
good luck, sincerely I wish you success, but do beware of keeping your identity in the process of climbing that fame ladder. You think it came from her, I do not think it was a heart-felt change. we will agree to disagree which is fine. i sppreciated your opinion and argument, ut this may be too cloae to home with you for nay objectivity as you are going through something similar.
i believe that she used to be very sad. and now she is happy. she used to write and play music to get it all out. to free herself. she probably didn't even mean to become famous. but she did. of course (she said it herself) the company was mostly taking all the decisions (choice of music and etc.). i don't believe any company is doing that anymore. like most every star does, she probably fell into the fame cliché stuff and lost a little bit of herself.
but that's not the point. i think the reason why her music has changed is because she healed. she got better. and now she is happy and happiness sounds takky most of the time when you write music. she founds who she was. maybe misery looked more real and raw.. but i think it's only because when you are miserable you need to get it out. but when you are happy you can just live it. you know what i mean? it's just harder to write good happy songs then sad songs.
...and no one could deny that just like any other job, yes you wanna be honest and everything, but it's way easier to do what people want then to be true to yourself. money doesn't lay in honesty, money is where they decided it would be. and i guess she got caught in that a little be. but compared to the other famous artists, she still seems to be staying closer to her true self. voila.
@drewlsy I completely agree. When people ask what music I like, my list usually includes "Old-school Jewel, before she sold out and went corporate." She has this beautiful sonorous voice that just sounds its best complemented by a simple acoustic guitar. She was never meant to do pop.
@jaevairny 'sonorous' is a fitting descriptive, might I embellish and add, 'vulnerably beatific' as well. Thank you - and yes - pop will eat itself! Kidding, I appreciate all 'art of noise' (including the actual band)...anyway lately, seems Jewel has come full circle these days despite the make-over as i have noticed she's playing more intimate shows with less band and more just her and the guitar. Kind of like a Jewel 2.0 or somethin'.
@remase73 wow she had the bump in here nose fixed....and she lost weight!...don't get me wrong shes beautiful ...but on her way to the Botox farm in the sky.........

I'm sorry, but Jewel and this song just don't mix. Nice pictures, though. She's beautiful.

Jewel was harmonizing in the chorus, and plus the recording isn't the greatest.
The reason it sounds a bit odd is cause her voice sounds more prominent than Dylans.
They should have turned her down a little during the chorus or just switch melody and harmony parts.
She still sounds amazing in her solo.

Is Jewel tone deaf? It sure seem that way in this one.
