i love pete's comment on woodstock @ 1:50! out of most of the bands that played that festival, the who gave it a much needed musical enema. in your face, flower power!
people gotta stop being all ' omg the beautiful guitar is being smashed!!' its not the guitar thats beautiful, its the sound made from the guitar thats beautiful!
here was the explanation for the greatest rock bassist ever john entwistle's personality on stage: "if we were all jumping around smashing guitars and causing mayhem, then we would look stupid and like spoilt kids." In fact, in that famous performance of My Generation he is the only one not smashing anything. and he is right.
Doubt it. Success Story was written at least a few years before cat stevens almost drowned and converted to Islam. Who By Number came out in 1975 and Cat almost drowned in 1976 and converted sometime after that....Not exactly sure when Entwhistle wrote the tune
How ironic that John Entwistle had a collection of over 200 vintage and custom basses. Here's a guy, who was known throughout the music world for preserving and caring for one of the truly great collections of vintage instruments, yet he played for a band that was known for destroying those same prized pieces of craftsmanship and art.
@PBANDSNOW Cause he's famous for smashing his guitars to pieces once he finishes a song, sometimes even before the song is finished. So I guess he always carries lots of extras so he'll still have something to play
thats why entwistle just stands by and watches the destruction. notice the first part of this movie (the part where keith's drums explode in pete's face). johns just standing there, holding his bass while pete and keith break everything in sight
Yeah, ds163807, That's what I was saying. Entiwistle was was like a vegan, living with a bunch of meat eating hunters, when it came to preserving vintage instruments. I wonder if it ever made him sick to watch Pete smash up a vintage Gibson SG or a Fender Strat. I still wince when I watch these old clips. I think of the great sounds my friends got out of their guitars back in the day. I remember the looks in their eyes when they took one of those beauties out of the case to play, pure love.
Thank you so much for posting this! I always enjoyed this movie.... the Who are a much-favored part of the soundtrack of my life. If you don't mind a question, what is the title of the song playing at 7:21, where Entwistle is taking gold records off the wall?
LOL, they all bash John at 6:30. :D
Rest in peace... you (two) legends!

@skybluemarshall John didn't smash any of his equipment. EVER. That was Pete and Keith's area. So, no. Its not ironic.
NakamaForever131387 1 year ago
@skybluemarshall but he was the only one that never destroyed his instruments.
