I found this so charming when I first saw it in the USA in the '70s. I have lived in France for nearly 20 years now and my French husband totally hates this movie! Professional fag jealousy, perhaps. I don't care, it's his bowl o' cabbage. I am an actual princess so this is especially dear to me. Bless for uploading! Uprated.
A very good version of the classic tale. I also like the Disney movie and the russian version... I also really love Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands" which tooks inspiration from it... :)
I don't usually like black and white movies because everything seems to blend to gether but I do make exceptions for the classics like the three stooges and BnB
I first read about this version in a book I had received called The Great Movies by Roger Egbert. I had wondered if it was in English or French, and now I know! It's cool that you posted it! Thanks!
Belle is also a name in french. And in french, Avenant may be a name also, but very dated. But the irony is that it's mostly an adjective used for caracterizing the appearence of someone and meaning attractive, full of charm. It's not commonely used except in litterature. It would seem pedant to use it in a conversation.
je cherche un sous-titre français pour ce film, mais je ne trouve pas. quelqu'un peut-il m'aider? J'ai commencé à apprendre le français. merci d'avance.
@am0123 - wow, I didn't know this movie (black & white 1946 version) existed before 2 days ago. I happen to love the old black & whites, especially the silent ones. This is a GREAT movie. Way cool story line. It's crap what they have now. Mighty grateful to you for uploading it & turning me on to it. THANK YOU so much. 9:49 pm Sept. 5 2010
45 years after this movie was made Disney adapted the classic fairy tale into an animated musical which became the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best
Picture, even though lost to The Silence Of The Lambs.
to correct Tagrantelli, her suitor's name: Avenant, means pleasant/attractive. (however, endorsement works, but not under the film's intended circumstances)
But the film itself, I have studied it for French cultural classes, and I have fallen in love with this movie many many times over!
It is a beautiful piece and stays much truer to the actual story than most other adaptations!
I LOVE this movie. I first saw it late one night on Turner Classic Movies, and fell in love with it immediately. The only thing that drives me nuts about the Beauty and the Beast story is that Belle fell in love with the BEAST. She wanted the BEAST.. then he goes and turns into a prince. The thing that I love most about this version of the film is that she's genuinely disappointed by his transformation into a man.
I saw this movie for the first time randomly on TCM one night and was hooked! I love beauty and the beast and this is one of my favorite versions... i'm so glad someone posted it on here :)
Josette Day was on prescription medication, probably mood altering drugs when she made this film. Jean Cocteau and Jean Marais were lovers...How Absolutely Delicious! Much True Art has emanated from Same Sex Unions!
@eric30du56 - "During the war Marais was married to his film partner, actress Mila Parély & their marriage was blessed by Cocteau, who wanted Marais to be happy. Marais & Mila Parély divorced after 2 yrs of marriage & shortly after their divorce, they worked together again in 'Beauty & the Beast' (1946), under directorship of Jean Cocteau." Yes, he was bisexual & Cocteau's lover from 1937 till Cocteau's death (1963). IMDB is my source. 4:53 pm Sept. 26 2010
So IMDB is wrong, I mean the guy who wrote the biography. I googled "Mariage Jean Marais Mila Parély" first link I had was a site in English saint[dot]org with exactly the same story, most part of this article is (forgive me) bullshit.
IMDB can't be trusted for foreign actors, it's like Wikipedia I guess, everyone can edit it no ? All the links I have in French tell a different story.
@eric30du56 - well in that case, THANK YOU very much for setting me straight. Yes, even though I am quite aware that you can't always count on those two sites to be 100% ACCURATE, I did this time. MY BAD! Once again, I am very GRATEFUL to you for the courtesy of the correct info. 7:29 pm Sept. 27 2010
