I'll give you a tip you may or may not know about. POWs are dodgeable. You have to perform a trick while it hits you and you won't lose your momentum. You will however lose an item if you're holding one.

You just need to not be on the floor (excluding jumps) but you'll keep the item. If you dodge by pressing the button to do a wheelie on a bike (even on karts) you'll spin for a much shorter time and drop your items.
