Whoever is playing this game is great at it. About 20 years ago or so I was stuck trying to get across some canyon, and stopped playing. Needless to say I sucked at this game.
I stand corrected -- fired up both SMB 1 "Vs" ROM on MAME and the NES ROM in Nesticle and noticed right away what I've forgotten over the years -- different placements for mushrooms, coin blocks, enemy appearance patterns, etc. between the two. Very noticeable in the latter stages between the two as you stated. Same with "VS Goonies" and the NES ROMs. Had more trouble getting items on the NES ROM than the VS arcade ROM.
@MrHookerJay I've never seen the Goonies arcade, but I do know the Vs SMB changes were specifically made to make the game harder, and to screw with experienced players.
Actually, there were two arcade versions of this in the USA -- the Play-Choice 10 and the dedicated "Vs." uprights. A local bowling alley had both "Vs. The Goonies" and "Vs. Super Mario Bros" uprights back to back. Sucked when the NES came out because the NES and "Vs" arcade hardware are the same. All NOA had to do was make ROMs and burn 'em on a cart just like they did with SMB ...
@MrHookerJay The Versus System did not use the same hardware as the Famicom and the NES. Also the VS games were actually ports of the NES games. VS Super Mario Bros is very different from the original, particularly the later stages. There was a VS The Goonies games, though.
My guess is that this never got a US release because by the time it would have been ready, they could have Goonies II out, which was a more involved game.
I don't know why I remember this game. Weird, but I totally remember this. I also remember playing Goonies 2. However I forgot about Goonies 1, but seeing those rats made me recall it. You should tell the "iratevideogame" guy that there was a Goonies 1 for NES because he spends a little while making fun that there wasnt.
@hootyhaha You may have seen it in an arcade. That's where I played it and was kind of annoyed it was obviously an NES game yet we couldn't buy it here in the US.
Thanks for uploading this. I've played and beat The Goonies 2 quite a few times, but I haven't gotten to play this one very much. I was surprised in how similar the two games are. They kind of took the first game and expanded on it. I might be in the minority, but Konami needs to make another Goonies game.
i used to have goonies 2 on my nes but i know the original goonies wasnt released on the nes in the uk.i do think i played it in an arcade tho. they used to have machines around that only played nes games on them and there was a time limit on them
The gold mice aren't really mice, but kitsune (Japanese red foxes). In Japanese folklore, kitsune are shapeshifters, and have other supernatural powers as well. Lots of Japanese video games contain elements of folklore and mythology like this.
The caped, running figure on the title screen is Konamiman.
I used to play this in the pizza place across from my house all the time when it was out. It was the Vs. version which I would love to own now. I was sad this was never released for the NES in the United States though. I actually never knew it made it to any consoles until the age of emulation. That pizza place was the only time I ever saw it. It wasn't even in any of the other arcades I used to go to that had a ton of games.

It was never released in the USA? That's weird, because I know my mom played it when I was little and I would watch her. :/

@AmeliaTalon N/m it was probably the second one.

That arcade machine would be the "Play-Choice 10". This game wasn't released anywhere outside Japan except on the Play-Choice 10 system.

yes thats right,i remember it being called play choice 10.i am sure i played goonies 1 on it

Yeah, I know, it's just easier calling them "Yellow mice". There's also a Tanuki hidden in the game.
I highly doubt that's Konamiman on the title screen. It's gotta be one of the Goonies. The math adds up (7 plus Sloth).
