Why is everybody getting all teary eyed in this video??? I understand music is his passion, but why is he crying over John Miles and the fact that someone won't buy his records from him??? And his wife bursts into tears too. What the fuck is there to be so sad about???
Eh, Paul here probably doesn't even understand heavy metal, yet he can devote an entire collection to bubblegum music. I mean, Elvis' Christmas album? Are you kidding me??? I'll bet he didn't even bother with progressive rock bands. Something tells me his tastes are very limited, expansive as his collection is. He's caught in the 'back in my day, you kids' mindset, which is dangerously limiting.
For the record, I'm not lumping in John Miles' great piece here with bubblegum music. But everything else seems to fit in that category. It's the impression I take away here.
You're right. I'll bet when you mention prog to him, he thinks Genesis and Yes, but probably has never even heard of King Crimson, Camel, Dream Theater, etc.
@sickfixxreturns I find this comment hilarious. This guy would be a fucking scholar on Crimson and Camel and to be honest who really wants to know anyone who likes Dream Theatre.
Incidentally, this guy's argument about the sound quality of a record versus a CD is not entirely correct, but it is not wrong either. LP's on good quality vinyl DO indeed have better sound quality than digital recordings on CD and the like, but not recordings on 45 rpm records. They were not particularly good. And cassette tape---fugedabouddit!
I can't help the timeframe I was born in. I value cd's as much as this man values vinyl. The greatest thing about cd's is that I can travel with them and listen to music while I'm driving ANYWHERE. It's still about the music. Compact discs don't have to be the equivalent of fast food culture. Disgruntled old record collectors make them out to be that way because the times have changed, I can appreciate that. I think mp3s are a disgrace, but this thing is way too biased in favor of records.
MP3's aren't a disgrace. No one ever said that the fidelity of an MP3 or MP4a recording was going to be or was SUPPOSED to be as good as a good piece of virgin vinyl. If you think that MP3 is a disgrace, some of us older people who kept our vinyl in good shape and owned really good analog playback systems feel similarly about CD's, which, although very clear, don't have the spaciousness or environment of a good LP on good quality vinyl that is unscratched. You need to see this in perspective
I did some more digging on Paul and it turns out he finally found a buyer from Ireland in August 2008 and was able to retire from the 3 million for which he had been asking for the collection.
I just discovered this documentary short in a list of films to be screened at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Perhaps someone who loves vinyl and understands its superiority to CDs will take this collection on. If so, I would assume he or she realizes that life shouldn't be compressed - no matter how complex that may be - into a series of ones and zeros. Visually speaking, some music artist once had a metaphor that has stuck with me: technology simply fills in every pixel with one color.
Hmmm... vinyl is making a remarkable comeback, actually. It is a niche market yes, but still vinyl right now is really hot. They are repressing all kinds of music. Too bad he lost his store so recently.
Great video. The man is right. Nothing beats vinyl. It's taken me 25 yrs to realize it. Just started re-collecting great vinyl from my past and to be perfectly honest,I forgot just how good it sounds. He is wrong about one thing though. Vinyl is not dead. It is slowly coming back. Just punch up "Soundstage Direct" on your PC to see what I'm talking about. I strongly relate to the man in this video and would like to take a week off work just to go through his collection. Great stuff!!!
millionaires are throwing away money for the most extravagantly stupid things and yet none has been interested in buying the biggest record collection in the world? and for a price 17 times less than the estimated one? dayamn..
If i had the money, i would buy the whole collection, not because i want to take his life away, but because i want to preserve the past for the future. I can't stand the clarity of the new music. I love records.
It's factually untrue. I did some estimates, and only one million of his albums would be between 3.2-5 Petabytes of data. A petabyte is 1000 terabytes.
total respect to you Paul-such a romantic guy
