I THOUGHT I KNEW ALL THESE, DIDN'T REALIZE THERE WAS A RESPONSE TO SINK THE BISMARK! I LOVE THIS. MY COUSIN'S SHIP CAME INTO NORFOLK WHEN IT HAD AN EXPLOSION ON IT IN 68" THE FORRESTAL
This is more true to history that Johnny Horton's song. The Bismark was a British battle with the Germans. The Bismark was actually sank by a torpedo plane after it's rudder had jammed. Believe it or not the model of plane was called "The Fairy Swordfish". (yeah FAIRY) I think singing about fairies and the Navy would have been taboo back then, but maybe.....Nah I won't go there, I like Johnny Horton's songs. Honky Tonk Man was a cover we did a lot, and always well received.
The best way that I found to tolerate Terpin Hydrate was after taking a tablespoon full of TH was to immediately wash it down with a glass of Orange Juice. The taste was just plain awful but did it ever work. I wish it was still available. It was the best!
@headphone355 If my memory serves me correctly the Army Version of this was call GI Gin. From what my grandfather told me years ago, they were not allowed alcohol in combat but everyone seemed to run to the medics and said that they sick. They were given something that I think he said was called Terpin Hydrate. I recall very clearly taking it during the cold season. It tasted horrible but it cured the crap of almost any sickness that you had. Too bad it is gone.
@headphone355 I forgot to mention that there was another version called Terpin Hydrate w/Codeine. That was sure some powerful stuff but it sure did work. The FDA says that it was not effective to that I say BS. It worked! The OTC stuff you get nowdays is severely watered down and it is not nearly effective as TH w/codeine was.
@Radar54037 Terpin Hydrate was banned by the FDA citing it had no proof of effectiveness. The truth is in the fact it is essential oils derived from Turpentine Oregano, Thyme and other NATURAL stuff. All these ingredients arel plant extracts. The big drug companies HATE DESPISE AND WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO GET THINGS LIKE THIS OFF THE MARKET. Hell yes it worked! My grandfathers both swore by the stuff, and great grandfather was an MD. Thank big business. They will be the end of us all, yet make $
@joboss63 Kills me everytime is probably an understatement. I practically roll on the floor from laughing so hard when I hear it. It is a real classic piece of work. Hard to find things like this anymore. AHHHHH the gold ole days...
Poster do you have the one was a red album cover there was a song or album called Cornfuscious Says.. or something like that .. if you got it can you post ! love to hear it
The best version of this was on their live album at the 1957 Country Music Awards convention.
In the middle of the song they go into a flamenco guitar solo, which then is taken over by the other guy launching into the Lone Ranger theme on a ukulele.
THEN, when they get back to the song, one of them sings an entire verse one note higher than the band is playing. The amazing part is that was all live unrehearsed on stage. You hear one say to the band "stay in this key".
The album was "Homer and Jethro at the Convention" which was released January 1, 1962. I thought it was the 1957 Country Music Awards convention, but I may be wrong about the date. The Bismark song on it was great though.
@wysiwyg666 Singing sharp, flat, etc. These guys were master musicians, yet they used a comedy gimmick to be famous. It worked and I am glad it did. Without it we may have never heard of them at all. I have a few old Homer and Jethro vinyl 331/3 RPM albums around. What I found funny was going to rehearse for a hard rock band and the bassist had his H&J albums on display.LOL I wish some videos of these guys could be found. One of the artists for Mad Mag. did their LP cover artwork. Same genre?
like it!!

Tony, our Italian cook, was a-settin' on the deck,
And we were a-peelin' 'taters. We must 'a' peeled a peck.
The captain yelled, "Hey, Tony! Is that a U-boat I see?"
Tony says, "It's not-a my boat; it's-a no belong to me."
