Just a quick fact sheet for those of you having a debate over wooden ladders. I can think of three large west coast departments that use only or encompass wooden ladders. Oakland, San Francisco, and one of LA Departments county or city. Long Beach may still use them as well but not completely sure.
Xtian1281, I don't really know what kind of dept. you are in, but when you said something about wooden ladders and then standards, that doesn't really make much sense. Try looking at "todays" standards, pretty sure wooden ladders aren't on the cutting edge anymore. Just because you can throw a wooden ladder by yourself doesn't mean a thing. It doesn't always matter how strong you are, the strongest guys in the world may run out like a little bitch when hell comes to breakfast! You may be one!

Actually my dept. had some being used until 1984 when one of our guys got his career ended when it snapped and he was about 2 stories up. Shredded his knee and was hanging upside down by his leg till they could get him down. Some depts. might even still have a few hanging around.

The hardeset job is not a firefighter. Try doing one 8 hour shift as a gold miner at the Lakeshore mine in northern Canada on the 8,000 foot level where there is no clean air, 120 f at the rock face, 100 % humidity,no visibility,and do back breaking physical work every day.None of you guys could handle it.Theres so much pressure down there your ears drums pop and the rock around you cracks and crumbles.Rock bursts happen all the time trapping and miners die from lack of oxegen.I worked there

We are stil just as important as the seniors on the dept. I hope u love doing the same thing i do. Its great to know their are other Juniors out their doing great things for their town.
I have ben a junior since september of 2007. But ever since i have joined i have made great friends with other people i have never met before. It is great learning new things and doing stuff for the community.

Ever since I was in middle school ive always wanted to become a Fireman and Firefighter. Some days I also wanted to become a Paramedic or even a Police Officer but I think a Fireman and Firefighter would be Awesome. Smoke detectors save lives! In the city of York Penn. there was a dwelling(not my area)where out of 7 family members 4 died a horrific death. The house was fully involved before the FD got there, 3 jumped and 4 burned to death. There wasn't EVEN ONE smoke detector in the house. There should be AT LEAST one on every floor & near EVERY bedroom, including the attic and basement.

That dosn,t make any sence.Firefighters are no better human beings than anybody else.Doctors and surgeons are heros too and never get close to the recognition a firefighter gets.I,m not arrogant.The public has been brainwashed by these outrageous displays like firefighters funerals to think they are superhuman or something.Cops are the same.

I would love to see you do half the things that we firefighters do everyday. You have no idea how it feels,to walk down the highway looking for a little girls doll to help try and comfort her,cause her mom died before you could get to the accident. okay kids... being a junior or an explorer is a give in.. you are nothing in the fire department the lowest of the low.. you dont work for the department you work for the firefighters.. learn this and youll do just fine. im an explorer and yes its awesome but saying stuff like this on the internet is a big no no. be respectful, honest, and remember you are in service of the crew. and yes. in my department we do some ALS stuff unheard of for explorers. as well as attacks into houses.

Eshelman15....I am also a Junior firefighter. I have been for at least a year and a half. I love been able 2 help ppl. even if it is just rollin hose. We are stil just as important as the seniors on the dept. I hope u love doing the same thing i do. Its great to know their are other Juniors out their doing great things for their town.

I'm a serving firefighter in the UK, and thanks so much for all the comments of support. I do the job because of the love of it and the chance to help people, but I don't think there's a single firefighter who would consider themself a hero, guys and gals doing a tough job yes, but heros no. I just watched that movie 'ladder 49' last night for the first time and I'm still choked up.. it still doesn't even come close to truly showing what makes firefighters heros, but it reminds you.

Ever since I was in middle school ive always wanted to become a Fireman and Firefighter. Some days I also wanted to become a Paramedic or even a Police Officer but I think a Fireman and Firefighter would be Awesome. I think that this song is a very nice sad song and one of my Favorite television shows is Third Watch.

Smoke detectors save lives! In the city of York Penn. there was a dwelling(not my area)where out of 7 family members 4 died a horrific death. The house was fully involved before the FD got there, 3 jumped and 4 burned to death. There wasn't EVEN ONE smoke detector in the house. There should be AT LEAST one on every floor & near EVERY bedroom, including the attic and basement.
