...or you could have saved the Taxpayer money and just shredded them. Luckily the US isn't suffering any economic problems so this excess can be justified.
Allow me to clarify this ill-informed and ignorant post...
1) NSA guidance routinely call for classified media to be destroyed at an approved destruction facility (like this EOD range).
3) EOD was already scheduled to destroy expired munitions you saw in the video.
4) Had we not used this pre-scheduled destruction, THE TAXPAYER would have paid more than $20.000 in shipping alone to sent the HDDs via certified/registered mail to HQ NSA for destruction.
Odd method of destruction as the destruction of individual HDD can not be verified afterwards. I assume these disks were already declassified and just blown up for the fun of it. Besides - too many people handling the disks.
And not discussing of the environmental contamination this caused.
I am doubtful this would have actually destroyed most of the data. Modern labs (using Magnetic Force Microscope i think) can easily reconstruct hard drives if they have been smashed to little pieces and even from fires. Looks more like these guys just shared various bits of their secret hard drives over a mile radius!
Normally I would point out the absurdity of a post like this, but I will refrain. Instead, please consider the following:
1) This particular destruction was conducted at a certified destruction facility on a controlled military installation under the direct supervision of 15+ EOD and WIAO certified personnel.
2) Over 1500lbs of EOSL-HE munitions were used in this EOD shot -- enough to effectively degauss them.
3) Appropriate destruction guidance (NSA/CSS SDDM & AFSSI 8580) was used to prep the devices for destruction -- SOP for this level of classified media.
4) If you can pull *ANY* usable data from these devices, before or after destruction, I believe there is a lucrative job opening for you at Ft. Meade...
@dilator dude its inpossible for the normal people to do that what ur saying ..
First :) i had a customer .. his hard drive crashed .. he had wedding pictures on it :) & hi"s wife wanted to leave if he didnt get those pictures back .. so he came to us & we shipped his shit hd to a company in china .. he payed over 3000$ for it .. he got his fotographs back on a extern hd disk ...
3000$ thats allot of money for some pictures ... i would never pay that much for some documents:)
I was on Guam in '72 guring the Arc Light missions. That EOD pit got used "A LOT" back then. BTW< what was the guy putting around the bomb at about 42 seconds ?

@lvl3talhead at no point did u mention this was at a certified desctruction facility.
you also failed to mention they had been repeatedly wiped before hand.
so how was the post therefore absurd?

@dilator no, not fire.
fire stimulate the plate molecule and make disorder into the magnetic field.
so data: unrecoverable.
hitachi088 10 months ago
@dilator you doubt that destroyed any data? really?

MauField 3 years ago
Uh. No...
lvl3talhead 3 years ago
They can't. By law, anything classified that cannot be declassified must be destroyed. And why not with a bang? ^.^

from 20gb hard-drive?
the only thing good inside are magnets and motor.
all the rest is metal (aluminum and other).

I don't know the nomenclature, but they're a type a percussion cap used to eject munitions from an aircraft's frame/rack.
(I'm COMM, not MUNS) ;)
lvl3talhead 4 years ago
Ah, ok, got it. BTW, how do you like being on "The Rock" ?
Postie1 4 years ago
Looks like Mk10 percussion caps. In any case, good job guys! (Ivan, Indian head grad, class 115S-98)

just use a magnet
elitedw 4 years ago
We can't just "use magnets" on classified drives. DoD and Air Force regs are very specific on when it comes to destroying classified material.
lvl3talhead 4 years ago
Plus, a magnet aint fun =D
