Beautiful vid, man. Sure brings back memories..some recent, some from long ago. The Sierras are my playground and this series shows why! Excellent choice of music and stunning photography. Thanks so much.
My father and I (@18yrs old) did the JMT in 1980 (southbound). Definitely the highlight of our backpacking "careers" (I started BP'n the Sierras in 1967 @5yrs old). I've long ago moved from Ca., but hope to one day get back for an extended (44day) JMT crawl. Your videos are motivation, thanks again!
Hey there. Very nice photos. I attempted the JMT in 1983 (north to south) but got swamped by torrential rains just south of Devils Postpile. My gear was too wet, and the rain showed no sign of clearing. :-(
Bu I still hike every year since then, mostly in Yosemite and Kings Canyon.
Are you going to post your 2010 trip on YouTube? I never get tired of Sierra hiking vids and photos. Happy trails. :-)
Thanks for watching the video. The 2010 JMT is still in the works. I'm trying to round up a few more photos from one of my hiking partners. I seriously thought of not making a video of the 2010 trip since it might look like a repeat of 2008. I have a problem limiting the number of photos because I think the entire area is beautiful and don't want to leave anything out.
I'm amazed you watched all 8 segments. That took a lot of your time! Thnaks for watching. Maybe we will cross paths out there in the Sierras somday. Take care.
Where is the rest of the trail. It looks like you stopped at Tuolumne Meadows. You only have photos up to Cathedral Lakes. I think you are full of bull, and a total phony. I have hiked the JMT several times and you did one days hike. LMAO
Obliviously you are very short sighted and can not read descriptions of the videos. There are 8 segments to this series with the hike starting at Happy Isles and ending at Whitney Portal. All of it is real – no phony pictures and the trip was 100% complete. Please be nicer to people who like to share their experiences. It’s our experience to share, not yours. BTW, I’m doing the full JMT again this year.
@rjdphoto -get over yourself buddy and learn how to read, the clip clearly says 1 of 8. you know what i think? i think you're full of yourself, and a total douche nozzle who thinks he's better than everyone else. maybe next time, before you open that hole in your face, you'll take a second to look around and pay attention to what's going on. might help you avoid having to extricate your foot from your mouth.
dave- great vid brother, don't mind the haters. keep hiking!
Thank you for your comment. I just completed the JMT again a few weeks ago - start to finish by the way! It was a blast. I can never get enough of that trail.
@rjdphoto I think you are a negative, egotistical, short sighted individual who reeks of jealousy. Glad others have noticed.
@HikingDaveThatHikes Thank you for the wonderful videos; great music and lovely tribute to your wife! It looks like you had a fantastic time. I am in the very beginning stages of planning a hike on the Buckeye Trail here in Ohio. I'd like to make it out to see the John Muir Trail one of these years!
It's beautiful - but the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.
At the time I regretted it, because hiking at least 8 hours a day (and that is mostly uphill)... I am So glad I did it.
Sure, I came across bears and rattlesnakes and blisters on my feet. This was the best time of my life -- but VERY hard to do. Once we hit Mt. Whitney, it felt so good.
Stunning, absolutely stunning! What a wonderful journey you have taken us viewers on! Thank you so much. I must go there - the JMT is at the top of my list of journeys to take as soon as I possibly can. Could I ask about the music? It's beautiful!
Absolutly amazing... I would love this trail. One of my top list hikes I would like to accomplish. id say right next to denali but thats very different. A few questions though, did you ever have to get more supplies along the way? And if so where? Also is water available most of the trail? I would most likely be doing this solo, is there any sections where the trail is faint or easy to lose? And besides The yosemite and mt whitney sections do you cross paths with others or is it desolate?
First of all, you will have a total blast hiking the JMT. You really should do it. A great recourse of online information is the Yahoo Group John Muir Trail. All your questions and more can be found there. I got resupplied at Tuolumne Meadows Post Office / Store, Reds Meadow, and Muir Trail Ranch. You can also get food at Vermillion Resort or take a hike off the trail to near by towns. Water is plentiful anytime of the year.
The trail is very well built, highly signed, and easy to stay on. It would be very hard to lose it. I hiked in a group of 4 6 people so I was never alone, but as a solo hiker you also will not be alone depending on when you go of course. We ran into day hikers usually not too far from major trail heads, but after about 5 7 miles out the people thinned out. Even still you will always run into other JMT or sectional hikers. They are all a great bunch of people.
I know of a few solo hikers during my hike that eventually teamed up with another solo hiker. They were complete strangers at first but became good trail friends.
@HikingDaveThatHikes That's exactly what happened to me on my Aug 2009 trip. Met that old mountain goat, Bill or "Toad" - he was turning 70 and it was his 18th time doing the trail! We became good friends and still keep in touch. - Darren
MOST EPIC! The music was bone shivering. I went out last August of 2008 also but, had to bail out at Reds Meadows due to water filtering problems... I was heart broken then but, I will give it another 'go' this coming August. Thanks for the pics!

The music for all the videos are listed in the credits at the end of 8 of 8. In this video section the song is Daunte's Prayer by Loreena McKennitt.
Glad you liked the video. It is not as professional as others on YouTube, but I like it too!
