I made an extension housing/nose cone (or my co-driver did) that allowed the PTO off the front of the 091 transmission. You can go to davesportdotcom and click the 'about us' link, then scroll down to the link to the old awd bug to see pictures.
what engine and what major modifications did you do to this beetle as id like to compete in some road rallys in jersey but id like a car thats different to everything else out there
I built a 2.8 liter VW Type IV (Bus) engine with a Holley 600 double-pumper carb and a huge Rajay turbo in draw-through configuration. It had a close ratio 091 Bus transmission and a Datsun differential up front with inboard coil-over pushrod/rocker arm suspension.
It was stupid quick. 0 to 60 on dirt in under 3 sec., but topped out at 105. I ran it from 1986 until some time in the mid 90's, then sold the engine to a guy in Mexico City and the chassis to a guy in Portland, OR.
Good eye! I actually used a VW 411 rear subframe with Bilstein coilovers and stretched the wheelbase as far as I could get away with. Because I ran a driveshaft up the tunnel I couldn't use the torsion housing.
this is the davesport car, google it for pictures of some of the fab work

"all wheel drive with a Datsun differential" how? first time i heard this!
vochitoken 2 years ago
The Datsun diff drove the front wheels. I picked the Datsun differential as it was small and there were lots of ratios available.

ok, but how do you power the front differential? you are using a vw gear box right? Do you have pictures of this set up? thanx!

That is pretty impressive, you guys should comercialize that gear box; I am sure a lot of vw baja enthusiast will pay for it...

Dude, noice! I live about 2 hours outside of Portland in Welches up on the side of Mount Hood! I love the Bug, how come you decided to get rid of it?

I had an opportunity to build a New Beetle and thought I might be able to get some higher end sponsorship (yeah right!)

Well that's too bad. Old Bugs are better anyway, am I right or is that just opinion?

I am definitely a rear wheel drive fan, so I would have to agree. The NB had better defrosters though!

Yes, nothing like being right next to your VW's windshield on a cold morning, and using a greasy shop rag to attempt a clearing of it lol.

Interesting. ;-)
The rear wheels are about 2 inches further back than usual. So it probably has porsche 911 rear suspension , am I right ?
