In 1968 the two black dudes who placed in the Olympics, gave the black power salute during the national anthem. This was Graces salute to them, blackface and all. Nothing racist, but a confirmation of their victory.
While she does give a black power salute at the end, she claimed she was not wearing blackface, but rather that she wanted to wear all the makeup in her dressing room. Which could be the case. She LOVED acid (I have no problem with that!) Great underrated band, Jefferson Airplane.
Sang with conviction and purpose and a true feel you could only get away with at the time. Poor Grace, like a wide-eyed Alice in a rock n roll wonderland...
@misterpaul1971 how is that embarassing. as much as white people WANTED to support blacks and told they WEREN'T ALLOWED to we still show love for our brothers. thanks for the "middle-class honky" stereotype man
@misterpaul1971 WOW! Calling Grace A Honky Is Also Embarrassing! Unless you are being ironic!!!!,which i can DIG! I'm Just a Skinny Ass Honky Working Class Lad From Scotland! SCOTCHland! In the States! In Britain we are a mixed community (with our bad/yellow teeth) another stereotype!! so we dont bother bout this shit anymore!
Grace has always denied she was doing the Black Power, Panther thing. She said she was just having a laugh. And nobody picked it up until later....and ran with it. Nobody rang the TV studio to complain either. She really got away with that one! I'd like to think she was doing it.....but nah.
when she says soon you'll obtain the stability you strive for it reminds me so much of me listening this song after a break up, and thinking gosh.that's it.
It's a damn shame music doesn't sound this good anymore now all we got is shitty music like that Justin bieber fag, Lady Ga Ga (stupid fuckin name) rap and ect.....
@801 "Current of the day and open-minded enough to allow them leeway, much to the chagrin of their network. So when Grace, before heading out front to tear into a raw live rendition of the newest Airplane anthem, "Crown Of Creation," spied a table full of makeup and spontaneously smeared her face with the darkest brown she could find, no one tried to stop her."
@californiaportugee Ahhh, when people knew how to sing and could play instruments. The live performances here and on the Sullivan show were better than the studio version - and that was good. No one can kill REAL rock and roll!!! It's here forever!
Can you re-encode to fix, e.g., 2:47 and 2:54 sound glitches? Thanks for putting this up, Jon Stewart is good but the Smothers Brothers put it all on the line.
"In loyalty to their kind they cannot tolerate our minds" In a world of PC, CCTV and computerised personal records, more true than ever it was in the 60s.
@eiamjw She always denied that it was, for some reason. Though it's pretty obvious what she was doing. And the funny thing, nobody ever complained or commented on it at the time.
@eiamjw -- I saw her arm raised but with her black glove against a dark background, I really couldn't see the Black Powere salute. In teresting fact, however, is that what started as a hand gesture by Black Militants (The black power salute), the raised clenched fist gesture ultimately became universal among the counterculture of the late 60s. What began as a gesture of Black Power it also became a gesture of the anti-war anti-establishment hippy culture.

@Skullhuntre you need to learn about Tommy Smothers - wish someone like him was around nowadays speaking truth to power. (Of course that is why he was taken off the air.)
Thanks for posting!

@801Current It was her clueless attempt at solidarity with black people. It wasn't very well received.
