  • I don't know how you attained this video, but gosh, thanks for sharing!

  • Alot of guys threw away their thumb picks because of Jerry Reed.

  • The world loves you Jerry.. RIP son

  • JERRY REED 2012

  • rip MR REED what a great musician and entertainer he was born to it

  • wow an amazing and talented man

  • It saddens me when people refer to Mr. Reed as anything but one of the top guitar pickers that's "ever walked the planet." It saddens me even more that he is gone.

RIP Jerry, you left this world a better place simply cause you were in it.

    Pick it son!

  • A very underrated singer who deserved more attention. RIP

  • I'm agreed, they just don't come like this anymore, such a talent is a rare thing these days. Rest in peace "snowman".

  • Listen to that thumb, God it gives me chills. JR the consumate thumbpicker. I love it, thanks for posting.

  • written by mr steve goodman, another fantastic guitar player.. RIP guys.

  • Videos like this put things into perspective,

It doesn't matter how much you make, how many houses you own, how many causes you front. When it all comes down to it, all that matters is how you lived, how you live and how many people remember you and what they remember you for.

In this case, the man matters more than the possessions. Jerry Reed was a great guy that was a good man and that's how we remember him.

I remember you Jerry and the world is a better place for you being here.

  • I totally didn't even realize what song this was gonna be. I just clicked on it because of Jerry. This is awesome!

  • he screwed up he said grave yards twice 1st shoulda been freightyards full of old black men

  • shit...I thought I played it good,he's kicking my ass!

  • That's some good guitar playing

  • I knew Jerry personally and he knew I was a die hard Jerry fan. He called me that " long tall drink of water" and I can still see him picking a " sideways saturday night hot lick " and looking over at me and saying " I'm good huh, Slim?" The world lost a most unique and very talented artist in Jerry Hubbard. RIP " Alabama Wild Man,,,, Snowman" I miss ya buddy.

  • @ airforcejim DEFINITELY...

  • Jerry and Jim Croce and Steve Goodman are having a folk rock jam together now

  • I dont know much about country folk music but: THIS IS GOOD!

  • Everybody loves the snowman!

  • I'm a bloody metal fan by nature and habit. But nothing, NOTHING, compares to Jerry Reed!! Loved that guy and his music, wish we had more....

  • THE Giant among Giants, Jerry Reed. Nothing else to say.....

  • When people say they like all music accept country I throw on some Jerry Reed.Opinion change's.

  • Jerry Reed was great. Funny and very talented. I miss him because he always gave me a laugh when I caught him on the TV. RIP Jerry. Miss Ya!

  • A phaser and a nylon guitar, only JR can make it sound like it belongs together. RIP Jerry, we all miss you. Still pickin' I'm sure.

  • JR one of the greatest tallents ever! I don't know if Guthrie came up with this chord progression or not, but it was written when 3 chords where all country songs were.

A real classic, JR and City of New Orleans.

  • Too good to be a big star. Really wonderful.

  • at around 3:15 i thought he was going straight into hendrix's 'hey baby'..hahah. grew up seeing tons of reed on the tube, still great stuff

  • brain orgasm

  • Rest In Peace Snowman. A true musican and a true legend. Right beside Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings.

  • Snowman this is Bandit, what's yer 20, over?

  • yea he os overlooked and if more people woold have herd him he would have made it in the hall of fame i wish he did

  • Still after hearing almost every version of this song done, Jerry Reed takes the top spot for me! No one like this talented man.

  • Phenomenal version. One of the best I have heard. It is a shame he did not perform the entire song.

  • Best Version of this song I have heard - keep pickin that guitar up there in paradise Jerry - 10/4 son

  • Ace guitarist, funny guy, sadly missed, he deserved more fame, but he probably would'nt have wanted it. Burt reynolds must have had a ball with him making making smokey and the bandit. Tell us Burt, how good was it?

  • The Lord broke the mold after He made Jerry Reed. A true original.

  • Amazing cover!

  • im ganna pic

  • 0:01 big ol hunk a jerry reed lol that hary legged guitar pickin sum bitch legend!

  • So many great versions of this song, but, I'm pretty damn sure, this one is my favorite.

  • i do not no who to like john denver singing rideing the city of new orleans or jerry reed i like them both rip john denver and jerry reed.

  • l love Chet but Reed was multi talented and sometimes l want to put him at the top of the list. RIP Jerry and Chet.

  • Easily the best country picker next to Chet.

  • I have been pickin on the guitar for better than 20 years, everytime I think I'm pretty good, I watch Jerry flawlessly plucking those strings and realize I need more work. I doubt I'll ever even get close. Watching him knocks me down a notch every time. What an amazing talent!

  • Jerr'y best trick was hiding his musical genius behind his good-ole-boy facade, but every once in a while it would shine like this wonderful piece of simplicity. Just listen to the intro and the exit. Just too sweet for words. And, just like his hero, Chet, he loved to be surrounded by great musicians. Not an ounce of ego. Sure miss you, man.

  • They don't come like Jerry anymore. They just don't. A true musician and a true performer. No frills, no bullshit, just pure talent.

  • @airforcejim There is one guitarist who is on his level: the Norwegian Øystein Sunde - He is one of the world's best guitarist, and he have done a lot of Jerry Reed, just faster. If you search for "Klå Øystein Sunde", you fill find a video of him to The Claw, just faster. He have also done The City of New Orleans, if you search for "Liten og grønn" :)

  • @airforcejim I'm sure the other 'Jerry' was influenced by him.

  • Love Jerry, love this , but would prefer less guitar effects.

  • I'd like to see Mcgraw, Urban, or Chesney try that.

  • Boy Jerry loves nylon string twanger..

  • Jerry has long been one of my very artists; he was truly one of a kind with the style of picking he did. No one could touch him, then or now.

Rest in peace, Jerry. You are deeply and truly missed...from a forever die-hard fan.

  • :"Trains that have no names~"

See.. all IMPORTANT trains have a name!!

  • When I first heard this version of City of New Orleans, I hated it, but the more I heard it, the more I warmed to it, to the point that I prefer this version now over Arlo Guthrie's

  • In my opinion, this song, written by Steve Goodman, had more popular appeal than anything Jerry ever wrote, however, Jerry arranged this far better than anything Steve Goodman ever arranged. The combo - Steve G's composition, and Jerry's arranging and guitar virtuoso, gets all the best things together, here.

  • J.F.C.S.A He is great.

  • Arlo Guthrie.. But this much better!!

  • @triplexxxsatyr: Jerry Reed aint dead..is he?

  • Passed away Sept. 1, 2008.

  • I like him.

  • my favorite version of this song

  • HE´S GREAT!!!!!!

  • THIS IS COUNTRY!!

    i love it..

  • @Noacuervo

This is Arlo Guthrie.... a Folk Singer's song! This is AMERICA to me!! But, like you, I love this song!!

  • @IowaHarley65

    No.

It was Steve Goodman, not Arlo, though he kindly gave the song to Arlo.

  • @schusterlehrling

Yes... you are correct, sir. Thanks....

He cornered Arlo late one night, forcing him to listen to it, then "passed it on" to Arlo.

I was referring to Arlo making it as widespread as it became, but it was written by Steve Goodman.

  • Jerry and my dad were old friends. When he (my dad) passed away, Jerry took a trip down to the funeral and sang at the service. I often think that dad and he are up somewhere in heaven picking their banjos and having a good old bit of fun.

  • @kabukikitsune I think that was truly awesome. You, as well as your late father, have an insight on Jerry that most of us couldn't imagine.

And I think you're right; even now I'm sure they're in Heaven picking banjos and having a great time. Somewhere I think I can hear it now...

  • Who don't love a big ole hunk a Jerry Reed throwed in there?

  • COUNTRY! and performed by a gentleman, no jumping up and down, no smoking pot on stage, no dancing. just a man and his guitar singing, no fake sound effects. I guess todays stars lack one little thing **TALLENT**!

  • Willie Nelson he aint but not to bad.

  • Willie Nelson he aint but not to bad

  • @farmer07089 WIllie Nelson couldn't hold Reed's pick.

  • @fernmann7 ya i guess your right it took me a little while to appreciate his style but after i heard him play "lightnin rod" I used my guitar for kindlin

  • Jerry Reed . . . Awesome!! I completely associate this man with my childhood . . . he was in so many 70s movies and T.V. shows . . . what a voice! And what a guitar!

  • A true classic of a man. Where has country music gone?

  • The most under-rated guitar player ever.

  • Wow, I didn't know anything about this guy until I happened upon a clip of him covering Jim Croce, then learned that he sang "East Bound and Down" in Smokey and the Bandit, and was also a trucker in the movie. He's an extremely talented guitarist and singer, playing with the likes of Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, etc. Awesome.

  • It's sad that no one plays like this anymore ,_,

  • @VampNinja89 Arlo Guthrie still plays like that. Give him a listen you might like it.

  • If this guy isn't the most underrated git player of all time I don't know who is....

  • It's the same melody than Joe Dassin's song "Salut les amoureux" (i.e. Hello lovers) recorded in 1972. lol However, the lyrics don't mean the same thing at all. Still a great song and long live Jerry Reed ! :-)

  • @Elvisvivant Arlo Guthrie had already released this song before then and had played it numerous times live before that. Steve Goodman actually wrote the song but gave Arlo permission to use it on his album Hobos Lullaby. This song has been covered by many artists Most notably Willie Nelson. In 1984 the year Goodman died, he was given a Grammy for best country song for City Of New Orleans covered by Nelson which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in the U.S.

  • @TheGunslinger5854 Thank you for the info ! :-)

  • Been a huge JR fan for ... well, just about ever, I guess. Was fortunate enough to see him in concert in Battle Creek MI, great seats, and there was a young couple that got up and clog danced during one of his songs. He was delighted! Heard this song first by the man that wrote it, Steve Goodman, and have heard it by many people since, but this is one of the best versions ever. RIP, Jerry, give Elvis a hug and get down to some serious jams!

  • WOW!!!

That is some impressive guitar playing right there!!

    Flows so naturally its unreal.

  • does he have a flange/phaser effect on his guitar? that sounds weird.

  • ur so right chuggie...jus so natural and inventive.bet he had oerfect pitch.

  • Man, that is the most natural guitarist I ever heard. Django crossed with Glen Campbell!

  • I love his melody in this song!

  • 2-yards over was a beautiful house that the "Hardees" restaurant fresh breakfast biscuit commercials began....way back in the 80's.

    Man....I am old...LOL

  • Man he could play a guitar. Have you ever heard him play the blues on it....? Priceless.

My claim to fame concerning JR is that in "Smokey and the Bandit" when Burt Reynolds showed up to that house to get JR, and the little girl ran out and said "Hey Uncle bandit!"

That was a school mate...and that was her family's house. I lived about 300 meters away.

The House is gone now..... a new city government building is built there now.

    It's also interesting that 2 yards over...(continued)

  • I love his personality. He always smiled. And beautiful song, really.

  • Truly on of the greatest ever. Love to watch him play. Thanks for sharing!

  • So much of his stuff is hard to find... I wish whatever record company that owns his albums would re-release them on cd...

  • Jerry was one of my fave country singers growing up in the 1970s.

  • What a huge talent this man was...it's rare. He left us too soon, only his early seventies. I hope he's still pickin' somewhere.

  • Young pickers should pay attention to this.

  • @thummy09 That's what I'm doing :)

  • The snowman could be the greatest artist ever.

  • this is the best version of this song.

  • Jerry Reed se disait plus chanteur que guitariste.

Il avait l'admiration des chanteurs et aussi celle des guitaristes.

Il était excellent dans ces deux domaines !

  • @Reiniou06

    Say that again!

  • brilliant

  • is that a flanger on the guitar?

  • is that a flanger on the guitar?

  • what a brilliant song and finger picking technique

Whats the effect on the guitar, sounds something like a flanger...

  • @balstad74 .....the guitar is tuned to Open G.....and that's an MXR phase 90 phaser...giving it that sound effect.

  • My mom used to dress me like this in elementary school.

  • One of the most overlooked guitarist around!!

  • this guy is really great!!

I just wanna be like him

    YES!!

  • Does this movie still work? because I can't view it

  • @jay600katana im watchin it right now.. he's a great guitar player!!!

  • @ericcartmill one of the best guitar players,in my opinion.

  • @ericcartmill One of the best guitar players and performers. R.I.P Jerry God Bless You

  • Chanté en français par Joe Dassin : "Salut les amoureux". Bravo Jerry, repose en paix.

  • Comment removed

  • sweet , what a guitar picker

  • This version sends a chill up my spine.. Jerry was a very nice man, especially later in his years, as he was born again.. Hallelujah!!!

  • its the best song in the world!!

  • I used to ride the real city of NO up to my grandparents in Miss up from NO . 1958.

  • Jerry Reed will always be a legend in my eyes, He is one of the greatest musical talents and all around great entertainers of our time

  • is he dead?

  • @mtbluzman Hope so they burned him.

  • @blobby1972 lol

  • How anyone could not see that this rendition of this tune is one of the best songs of all time is beyond me.

  • I hate that I am so late to the Jerry Reed greatness. RIP Jerry. You have a new fan and I'm glad to call you one of my favorites.

  • thank you

  • This was amazing

  • the battle of new orleans

  • Everytime you see Jerry whether here or on the movies he was on he always seemed to be a fun loving happy person. This came through in his music too. You can tell it in this performance here. He is in no hurry just letting it work itself out. This is for sure my favorite version of this song, closely followed by the Highwaymen's version

  • His Talent just untamed skill and charisma will be heard forever and should be played loud with friends ;)

  • I guess God likes a little guitar picking too.

  • Steve Goodman....

  • FANTASTIC, What else can you say, I wish I could pick like that.

RIP Jerry, your music lives on.

  • good rendition

  • I dig Jerry but this song doesn't suit him. He's got a lot more life than this tune.

  • @shatchett0 just cause he aint speeding down the highway dont mean he aint drivin fine stop judging the music and enjoy the scenery.....

  • @dlevita still, listen to his version of roll in my sweet baby's arms, especially the last guitar solo. that just blows my mind.

i like his rendition of this song.. but i agree that its not really in his niche.

  • Amazing!!

  • the best version ever, what a picker, I loved it, another great gone why before he should have, out loss.

  • didnt know he was that good of a picker....... good for Jerry

  • thats good with fred. lol great stuff the snowman is.

  • Low key vocal but great guitar work.

  • That's a phase shifter...and a great song...and a great character actor...and one hellacious guitar picker

  • Damn , Jerry Reeds the man .

  • Hard for any country western singer/composer/musitian to compare then or now , One of the Greatest EVER !! Hope he's lookin down grinnin at us playin his hits still !!

  • I saw Jerry Reed over 20 years ago in Lawton Oklahoma. I was in sitting one of the front rows and stood up to take a picture...he stopped singing and looked at me and said "Honey, you ain't gotta take my picture, I'll come home with you and sit on your dresser." Needless to say I didn't get the picture but I did turn a thousand shades of red!!

  • Hahaha, well isn't that a great story to tell? =] .

  • @CarliB7 he used that line in smokey and the bandit bless him

  • @CarliB7 That's Great !!

  • @CarliB7 : Oh good gosh - I would've been just like that.... I always loved him - not just for his playing and voice, but gosh he was sweet...

My sweetie has a similar style, but plays bluegrass gospel; however, he loves to watch the virtuosity that was Jerry's picking - even today, it is still hard to find...

  • @CarliB7 I went to Basic Training at Fort Sill almost 10 years ago. I was just a little boy of 17 though. I didn't know any better. Boy how the world has changed since then. On a very dramatic scale. Oh well.....

  • @CarliB7 .must have made your day though

  • @CarliB7 and a memory that will last a lifetime !

  • @CarliB7 BS

  • @CarliB7 that is the coolest shit ever

  • @CarliB7 One of the coolest damned concert stories I have ever heard!! Jerry Reed is the man!!

  • @CarliB7 did you steal that from smokey and the bandit honey?

  • @CarliB7

    Nice

  • he can play saw him in concert just after he did Bat21, he talked more than he sang, would have rather heard him sing more, now we won't.

  • Dang, I miss Jerry Reed.

  • beautiful....no one can copy that!!!

  • how does he get that sound!?!?

  • seriously. what is that?

  • i know hes playin a guitar but it sounds so diffrent

  • Just a guess, but he is playing a nylon string guitar through either a fat chorus effect or a phaser. I am leaning towards a chorus with a lot of depth and a slow speed.

  • whatever it is its sexy!

  • I play guitar, this is one of the best I have ever heard, jerry reed, right on.

  • great version....you're FIRED!!!!!

  • Also, he's playing in open G tuning! Jerry's the best!

  • wish we had a song like this four our country UK

  • Ferry Across the Mersey

  • Definately one of the best versions out there - and I love Willie nelson and Johnny Cash!! Too bad it's not newer or a bit better quality... this is a CLASSIC!!!!
