i remember reading about this performance. this is the famous/infamous opening of the new bastille opera in 1990, no? i didn't realize there was a video of this. was this telecast on french tv? i hope they'll release it. i read at the time somewhat negative reviews of verrett's performance, but that was the opening night. apparently she got better later on. the last performance bumbry sang both cassandre and didon.
In fact Bumbry sang both roles because a representation has of the uncalled-for being of two days for fact of strike and Verrett was in Milan for a recital.
Is this the performance w/ her as Cassandre and Shirley Verrett as Didon? I MUST have this! This is good. One of the few times in her "soprano" days where you get some true fire and not just technical singing. She gets into the character. I really enjoyed this clip. Brava for a great post
