Diesels tend to produce a white puff of exhaust smoke when lean or wrong compression setting. I suspect it was a fuel feed problem here, as I did not hear the engine doing the characterisitc overcompressed sound.
I always have the needle set pretty rich and on medium compression setting for the first runs, this way the piston laps nicelly with plenty of lube and on a low load.

Every time it stutters I can see smoke from the front of the engine. Is it backfiring through the carburetor?

Actually what you see is misfire from a lean mix.
