AMC made AMC, untill they were bought out by Chrysler in 1987. Chrysler mainly bought AMC for the Jeep. Chrysler then renamed AMC, Eagle. Eagle lasted until 1998.
@nightwheel AMC was bought out by the French (Renualt) Chrysler bought the company from Renault. Renault stopped making AMC cars & replaced them with their horrible cars. Jeeps were still engineered by the AMC people which were still decent vehicles. Chrysler wanted Jeep & soon killed off the awful Renault cars.
From what I understand, there where actually 53 made in case one was wreck. Something that there was a requirment of 52 cars for some reason... I think I got video footage of this car at the Mopar Nationals in INDY several years ago. Very Impresive indeed. 5**** for sure.
1jackdk - Reason for 52 was to claim it was a production made car. Yes there was extra made. One was a backup and an AMC dealer in Norfolk VA got it. They raced AMX-1 and had a twin. There's two AMX-1's out there being restored. One is in Canada the other in the US. There was some confusion to this and the spare AMX is the reason
Just so y'all know the SS AMX was 11 seconds off the showroom floor.... I believe they had that Group 19 performance package...Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Anybody out there seen a Gremlin from Randall AMC in Arizona? This damn thing had a 401 in it....
There was 53 SS AMX 's made. They where all painted white from the factory, when they where sent to Hurst. They had stiped interiors with no radio, heater, wipers, carpet padding ,acid diped front ends. Special heads, 2 carbs, and all other kinds of goodies. They held all kinds of records, and still may... I do remember the Randall cars... BDQ is what I'm talkin bout...
Ford 390 FE; 650 lbs, AMC 390; 540 lbs. Both Ford and GM outsourced Borg Warner transmissions (T-10 & Ford-O-Matic). What's seen here is AMC's answer to the Shelby Mustang; a "real" two seater. By shortening the wheelbase the car becomes proportionally wider for better cornering potential. A/FX cars of the sixties moved the rear axle forward to promote quicker weight transfer, this feature makes the AMX (and Gremlin) a good drag race car as well.
Did AMC build own engines? I heard their cars were grab bags made up of big 3 components. The AMC 390 c.i.d. engine is coincidentally identicle, in displacement, to Ford's.
I recall my 1970 Hornet having a G.M. Saginaw steering gear, for that matter, which gave the Hornet-Gremlin series a superior feed-back over that of Ford's compacts.
There's nothing wrong with such practice. The advantage being that one, for example, could replace weak AMC 390 with bolt-on larger displacement Ford block
AMC built their own engines. The Ford 390, while the same displacement, is a much larger engine (outside dimensions). A ford 390 will not bolt up to anything AMC.
KillaMaker...AMC 390 engines are a good engine. They had all forged crank, rods, and pistons from the factory. They can make an easy 400-500+ horsepower with head and valvtrain modifications. These motors were made by amc not the big three. They also had 727 and t-10 transmissions backing them up which are both real tough. If you have an amc 390 its worth leaving in place. They got a bad rap because of their oiling system which can/should be modified to work better.
From what i hear lots of people would re-build these engines to the wrong specifications for bearing clearances using ford/chevy specs. instead of the intended amc specs. Which also gave them a bad rap. Its true amc did use SOME other parts from the big three but not near as much as everyone says. Its all folklore. Their powerplants are worthy competition for the big three in my opinion.
Oooh, might I assume your one of those tards who rip out thier AMC V8 for some me too lemming 350 chevy. newsflash, there are mods to improve the oiling system on an AMC V8. My 360 in my Gremlin does fine.
Actually i love amc power...good blocks, forged internals from the factory, interchangeable parts, dogleg heads...all great stuff. But you said "there was nothing weak about them
" and thats not true. A built amc engine with no mods to the oiling system won't live long. However your use of wording and rampant close mindedness to anything besides amc power shows your bart mangrum style of mentality.
Well aren't we shoving words in ones mouth. I said there's nothing weak as in the power they can produce. I'm aware of the oiling probs an AMC can exhibit. Theres problems that plague just about all engines if you wanna get technical. Did you chester on this vid to troll or help us AMCers educate the misinformed who comment on here who think AMC V8's were made by the big 3. Maybe if you were more specific in the first place, I may have been less saltier than my usual self!
I thought i was educating the misinformed ,my comment may have helped someone save their motor(maybe even you if you had not already done the modifications).Instead of acting like a defensive little kid you could have listed your oiling mods or left out the first 23 words of your post and just started with"There".. If you want to educate others start with yourself and clean up your trash talk and others might listen to you. Once a bart always a bart...
Your implying that every AMC v8 is a grenade waiting to go off. Like I said, if you maybe added more constructive words to YOUR post here maybe I wouldn't have been so salty to you. I only posted a reply to the comment about the 390 being weak & it had F all to do with an oiling issue. You are obviously holding some kind of grudge towards me and theres no need to air it on here ok!
Wrong again...I wasn't implying amc's are bombs waiting to go off. I simply pointed out their weak point. which as you say ,and i agree to ,that every make has weak spots. However my "GRUDGE" as you put it is with you slamming people with smack talk instead of informing the unknowing, and having the slightest of an open mind to alternative power. I do support amc power all the way, but i'm not gonna slam everyone that isn't a purist or doesn't have /want an amc engine in their amc car.
Thats where your wrong.your def. bearing a grudge prob from Frans forum about the guy with the BBC in his Javelin. While I'm not in favor of a alternative swap I'm not as abrasive towards it as I used to be"again your shoving words in my mouth good sir" I have friends who have big 3 pwd AMC's. I agree with them that its better to see it in use instead of in the junkyard. I disagree with the guy with the Javs reasoning on swapping.I will keep my opinions to myself on that one.
Dude i never read a forum about a big block javelin i don't know what your referencing. So...Do you trash talk your friends with big 3 power or do you save it all for strangers?? I agree ...i'd rather see an amc with alternative power than in the crusher! I'll even go as far as to say alternative power has saved many amc's from the crusher. When i was younger i had a favorite brand and didn't like anything else..then i grew up and expanded my knowledge and tastes. Hense my appreciation for amc.
I have a fav brand still but I like other makes, gimmie a 68 Chevelle anyday or better yet a 68 Pontiac Beaumont SD 396"look that one up" I am a Mopar fanatic as well. The day I can't find anything AMC for my Gremlin is when a 360 crate or 440 goes in it. Look, your only trying to provoke me and I'm not gonna give you the satisfaction! Lets agree that we disagree and leave at that!
I'm not trying to provoke you, just tired of getting slammed by you. So yeah "i'll agree to disagree" and put an end to this whitty banter. Shame it took so many posts for you to talk sensibly with no insults. By the way i loved my 68 chevelle that i swapped a beaumont grill into. Most fun car i ever had. (6 yrs. of tire shredding mayhem).1994-99 R.I.P. SOLD.
AMC made their own. Only exceptions were the 55-56 Packard V8, '77-'79 VW 4, '80-'83 Pontiac 4, '84-'87 Chev 2.8 six, & '84-whenever 2.0 P-R-V diesel. In house engines from '50 or so on are: 196-6cyl. 250-287-327 V8, 199, 232,258,& 4.0 6cyl, 2.5 liter 4, & 290,343,304,360,390,and 401 V8's.
The only coincidental connection between a Ford FE 390 and an AMC 390 is the displacement. Don't share bore, stroke, block size ( the Ford is a big block ), bore spacing, or any thing else. Hope this helps.
@KiLaMaker There was nothing "weak" about an AMC 390 in an AMX or Javelin they would & could embarrass a 396 Camaro, a 390 Mustang & many other cars of the period.
An AMC builder at the time made race heads by horizontally sectioning 4 cylinder heads into "1 tall and 1 short" cut per head, took the 4 tall peices per head and furnace brazed them together for a bolt-on head with much taller ports. AMC also had a 2X4 cross-ram "dealer installed" manifold for 2 nice big holleys. Good for an additional 100 horse or so on a 390 SS race motor.
Very nice! If I ever hit the lotto, I want to buy one! I one one of every r/w/b AMC car. I have the Machine covered now, just need the sc/rambler(a and b), ss/amx and trans am Jav! Do you have about $200,000 to loan me? Was this car in last months car craft?
