Thank you for posting this. I saw this when I was 15. I did not know who Scott Hamilton was then. For reasons I will never understand this particular award ceremony affected me so much I went on to achieve a lot in my life because of seeing it. (not in figure skating of course). I have looked for this footage, but could never find it until this year 2010. So, I saw it again this year after not having seen it for 25 years and it still affects me the same way.
Dick is making excuses for a lackluster performance. These are the Olympic GAMES. Not the Olympic AWARDS. Hamilton won because of the figures. He skated poorly in Sarajevo. Orser won both the short and long programs but fared poorly in the figures.
@nosuchpersonvideo Dick wasn't making excuses. As you pointed out, it was a 3 part competition. Being called "figure" skating, figures were valued very heavily. Thus, Scott won on the merits by which all were judged. Nothing more nothing less.
Ah, but it is only called figure skating in English. In French, for example, it is called patinage artistique - artistic skating.

@RothdeMan This is why it is called figure skating. Now, it is more emphasis on jump, jump and more jumps.
Without the figures, Liz Manley would have won in 1988. I really miss the days of Debi Thomas, Katarina Witt,
Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi and Jill Trenary, and oh yeah Karen Cadavy. Not sure about
the spelling of the last name. These skaters are perfect examples of a true figure skating stars.
