Sorry pal, Stanford beating USC as 41 point underdogs is a bigger upset than App State. App State came in on 21 game winning streak, just won two I-AA National Championships, had 6 D-I transfers...

Stanford was starting a freshman QB who had NEVER even taken a snap in High School. And the spread on the App State Michigan game was 34.

Chaminade still ranks as the biggest upset in sports history, Buster Douglas #2, & US Hockey Lake Placid #3...

@TheRealJohnnyGuns I have Lake Placid #1 and this #2. Almost forgot about Buster Douglas, and you are right App St beating Michigan is not the biggest upset ever. It's not even the biggest upset in the history of college football. I can think of three that are bigger #1 1921 Centre College over Harvard, #2 1926 Carnage Tech over Notre Dame, and #3 1950 Navy over Army all three of those are bigger than App St over Michigan.

Just an FYI, it's a lie to say the entire UVA team suffered from the flu. Ralph Sampson did NOT play against Houston and Phi Slamma Jamma the game before in Japan due to the flu (a game which Virginia won to become No.1 in the country) , he did, however, play against Chaminade two days later and played 39 minutes - NO ONE else was sick ! Trust me....I played in the game ! Sincerely, Richard Haenisch

Sampson was not scheduled to play that day. He only suited up b/c the fans wanted him to. The entire team had the flu from their trip to Japan the day before...

Yes. App State was one of the best teams in the FCS, and Michigan was nowhere near the unquestioned number one. Chaminade was just an average D-II team, nothing else.

First of all, Chaminade was not "D-II", they were an NAIA team at the time of this game. They also weren't average - they entered the NAIA tournament as the #1 overall seed and lost in the semifinals. That said, I agree that this was a much bigger upset than the App St.

Man, I just remember crying my eyes out, after I heard about this loss. I was like 9-10 years old when this game happened. I hated going back to school because people knew that Ralph was my idol. This was a huge upset.

I went to High School with Tony Randolph and we played ball together. He was a great player and I think Ralph underestimated him. I remember it and it was a great suprise to eveyone but us hometown folks!
