the iTunes icon can be edited in a different way, go to applications, right mouse click itunes->show package content. then go to resources and search for the itunes.icns file. replace it with your .icns file of the same name.
@themartinmertik Its usually default but hey: SystemPref. -> Dock -> Effekts(Effects in general because my version is in german but you get the idea) hope this helped.
@davidb693 as far i know you cant change system folders with this method(or at all i think) foe example iTunes can not be edited like this neither the Finder
I downloaded two programs (liteicons and candybar) which didn't help at all before I found this video! You, sir, are a genius and could have saved me 30 minutes! Bravo!
Maybe you can help me, I changed my iCal icon and now all I get is a generic icon that looks like a sheet of paper with the Preview icon on it and says ICNS at the bottom of it. No matter what I do I can't get the icon to change to what I want it to. I also have this problem with my Developer folder on the Mac HD. I've tried Candybar 3.3.1 but it's no help as it doesn't show iCal at all. Thanks!

In order to copy paste a folder icon you have to copy the actual image ~ not the entire file or it's (preview) icon.
1. open the image in Preview
2. chose Edit > select all (cmd + a)
3. chose Edit > copy (cmd + c)
4. now open up the "Get Info" tab on the Folder
5. select the Folder icon at the top left and and press cmd + v
