This is the first non-porcupine tree song Steven has written that I listen to. His solo stuff is great too it seems! I really should invest some more time in exploring his work more! beautiful!
i think with his solo stuff he's hot on reznors heels, for interesting sounds and textures.i can see why he separates this stuff from porcupine tree.i think i maybe like it slightly more, and i'm a big p tree fan.
@1kevpap I agree with the reznor thing, but I´m more into the PT.
SW got this jazzy-thing going on on his solo records (2) and thats when I SOMETIMES fall of the wagon, but overall he is a GREAT musician, with great lyrics and the soundscapes the guy makes is amazing. BUT Richard B. is the sound guy in PT, no doubt!
justin Biber?? The difference of sw to others is that you can hear his songs thousand times and they won't be boring ! PT and SW are musicans deluxe... you don't never less 'an evening with steven wilson'
i second svantebolos. p tree are in a completely different galaxy, musically. there's no commercial inhibition to their creative style. who cares about charts? its the music that counts! go pt!
I just discovered a moth in my room. I offered it a hand, and it climbed on it. Then I carried it to the window and let it fly away, while this music was still playing. Things like this usually don't happen. Beautiful song.
@jojojodio If you respect an artist for their work like Steve Wilson then you should buy it to support their career. I pirate music, but I'm just making a point. I still buy albums from bands and artists I want to support. =)
@HxcRobb92 - If the artist itself upload the songs on Sound Cloud, then it is not pirating but sharing, ok? Make sure you check this before insinuating that I am pirating his music.
I only WISH I was able to get the Deluxe edition of Insurgentes... I have the regular one, but if I could have gotten my hands on the Deluxe edition, I could listen to this properly : / Wonderful piece of art!
I love this song. I do not see Steven Wilson as a god, as some idol, or some supernatural composer. I see him as a common guy, like me, with the successful ability of a music artist. The way that he convulges these sounds to us really brings out his own intellect. I think these simple reasons keep me coming to his music for inspiration.
@JGill93 OR, he'll remain popular but fall into self-destructive bullshit like every other teen star.
God I wish we lived in like a modern re-incarnation of the 70's where somehow the music trumped looks and everything else. Back when musicians were musicians and the limitations of media allowed for the perpetuation of music artists based solely on their sound and NOT their looks.
70s had just as much bad music as any other time period, people always think the past had better music but its just because good music gets remembered the crap gets forgotten. One day people will say i wish we had music like 2010 like steven wilson and dream theater. They wont even know about JB
One thing I have with hardcore pt fans is that Yes I agree it is not a common band to find and the music they do is actually brilliant but that's the thing is it's music. I often read comparatives to Justin Bieber who doesn't even qualify as a musician. SO if we were to compare Steven WIlson/Porcupine tree we should do it with something of it's category and not some manufactured celebrity idol who's face you see in cosmo os some other rubbish magazine. Music is to be compared with music
@Svantebolos You can compare this to Katatonia, Opeth, or even some Beatles. Porcupine tree has embedded a lot of these musical characteristics into their music and has made their own unique style. To be honest, I don't think Porcupine Tree has a specific genre. They always have something new to offer in every album. Which is why they are one of my favorite top 3 bands.
This song just takes the rhythm and goes so deep that I cannot explain...Steven Wilson may have made himself my favorite composer with this single album. I mean goddamnit, every song could be an awesome single. Hahaha.
@MrJasonroy There is not any new PT material after The Incident (2009), and the live DVD Anesthetize (2010). It will most likely be another year before a new PT release; however, Steven is working on a new solo album due later this year, a new Blackfield album due later this month, and a collaboration with Mikael Akerfeldt also due this year :)

@onesppiegel I don't hear much in the way of delay or that kind of effect, but there's definitely something interesting about the tone. Sounds like an electronic violin.
@onesppiegel I don't know if it is an electric violin, sounds like it. But, I don't believe on the album it says that an electric violin was used on any of the tracks. He must be using some kind of e-bow or something, but i don't know. It almost sounds like he is not picking any notes at all. I would like to belive that it is an electric violin, though.
@onesppiegel Sorry, I delete my own comment by mistake. For those who were reading, I was asking about the efect used in 02:30... I was wondering if it was some kind of reverse delay or e-bow.
@onesppiegel I'm thinking it's guitar run through an overdriven distortion box, which is why the picking (what little there is) isn't very audible; the sustain carries the note and somewhat covers pick attack (and the picking can be gentler than usual, which also helps) (and I've done this; I'm not making it up). Fripp, Hackett and many others have used this over the decades.
@onesppiegel I'm pretty sure it's not synth; the longer notes start to evolve to a higher harmonic, using feedback, a characteristic of electric guitar + overdrive. And it's not electric violin. Incidentally, the koto is the plucked harp-like instrument heard starting at :22 and on throughout the song, including the beautiful outro where it's combined with one or more guitar tracks.
