  • HOW MANY POOR ZEBRAS DIED TO MAKE THIS FILM??!!

  • That contrasty stage hurts my eyes and distracts from the song, but +1 anyway since it's the music that counts, and this is very good.

  • 401 people dont know good music

  • This isn't the original. It's a stage rendition. The 45 version was the best.

  • Gilbert O'Sullivan > Jay Z

  • @OTACKEY2009 Then please click on my channel and join us !

  • I like this song the best!

  • I always thought it was Paul McCartney who sang this.

  • @ffairlane57 Yeah, this part is Paul singing about The Beatles break-up, isn't it? He was going to run the whole thing through Linda Eastman's manager.

Looking forward to and who wouldn’t too/ The role I was about to play/ But as if to knock me down/ Reality came around/ And without so much, as a mere touch/ Cut me into little pieces/ Leaving me to doubt/ Talk about God and His mercy/

  • My sister passed away from cancer in 1986, then my father in 1991 when my mother was 65, just like this song. She grieved for both of them all these years. Now she passed away Jan 4 2012 and I still get emotional listening to this song. A very beautiful song reflecting life!

  • @LEGN0ME1 Use this to heal. I lost my mom 3-18-05. I always wondered "What will I do when my parents are gone?" I am a broken puzzle, with a piece missing. I found out what I would do without my parents...Go on... Alone again...naturally. Hang in there.

  • @dammitsthename sorry .. it was my dads's favorite song..lost him in my arms..:(

  • @heleneohanlon I am soon about to lose my husband he is terminally ill, not long now, and i will be alone, in this world, I am so sorry for your loss, I love him amd will hold onto our memories and cherise them ((((hugs))) to you xx

  • @heleneohanlon You have my deepest sympathy. Don't worry, God will look after him now until you both meet again.

  • @LEGN0ME1 my condolences. wishing you some happiness in the future.

  • Gilbert et Peter Skelern...les deux plus grands chanteurs romantiques du xxè siecle?

  • CHERISH what you have, while you have it. I cannot stress this enough.

  • Thanks for the original version ... it's wonderful! ;)

  • This has probably already been posted in this thred, but Gilbert was on a local radio show (in Indy) and revealed a bit from this song. The DJ said "Wow man, that must have really been horrible loosing your father and then your mother from a broken heart!". Gilbert said "Don't worry about it! I made it up! I was looking for a vehicle for a song for the album and I made up the story and wrote a hit song. That's all there was to it! :)

  • @tim5365 In Indy?

  • Thank you! I hope you always continue so perfect in their choices. Congratulations

  • this song always makes me cry.

  • Oh my god, he sounds like Paul McCartney!

  • Gilbert fans - Click on the ` mohawk3881 ` channel opposite - !!!!

  • Who play that solo? What does the guitar player name?

  • @userkama Big Jim Sullivan . No relation to O`Sullivan !

  • @Tralexander71 Paul was gonna lead it all but got ousted by the others, yes?-- To think that only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay Looking forward to who wouldn't do The role I was about to play? But as if to knock me down Reality came around And without so much as a mere touch Cut me into little pieces Leaving me to doubt Talk about God in His mercy Who if He really does exist Why did He desert me? In my hour of need I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally
  • YouTube is as close to a Time Machine as we now have .Reliving the sights and sounds of the Past . And finding those jewels that we may have missed. This is one of those jewels i had forgotten . I Thank You for reminding me of it .

  • @alfcincotti -I presume you're Italian? Learn English then you can say; (say it with me) "This-is-a-shitty-song!"-like a normal human being! BTW-can anybody name me a #1 Italian Rock & Roll Hit? Ooh, What? You say the Italians missed the fucking boat on Rock & Rock!? Really! Hey thanks Spartacus! Can you tell my friend Mussolini the Roman Empire has fallen too?! Thanks dude!

  • loneliness and sadness came and passes-by..naturally

    >such a great song..

  • I was 13 when this came out and I bought the 45...which I still have....thanks so much for posting this video......such a pretty song.....

  • Both my parents have passed away. This song reminds me of both of them. Miss them very much.

  • @Spiceman1303 God bless man, I know they are in a much better place

  • che canzone di merda!

  • @alfcincotti

come fai a dirlo, basta che la traduci, e' una canzone con un testo meraviglioso, non parla di amore, parla della vita.......

  • What a great song from a great era. How can anyone with any sense not like this type of music.

The music industry has gone down the toilet these days. Thanks Youtube; we can still live our youth through this awesome music. Great post!

  • 399 put their screen upside down

  • Love this song..... REmember when i was a kid.......sad and lonely but still happy, just a kid

  • ;_; *sniff*

  • 70's, summer vacation spent at camp at the beach at York Beach Maine, cut off shorts, t-shirt, converse sneakers, Shwinn bike, listening to this song on a transitor radio on an am rock station, the orange sun setting, cookout stove with boiled lobsters and bbq chicken filling the air with wonderful aromas, neighbors laughing and mosquito torches glowing, my parents were young and healthy and alive and happy. Music like this is the soundtrack to wonderful memories that will never die.

  • @dirtydavy great way to put it, very descriptive. made me think back at my youth sa well. thanks

  • @dirtydavy What a beautiful memory! thanks for sharing!

  • @dirtydavy Enjoying GOLDEN ROD saltwater taffy and Big Belly Fried Clams.....- ah, York Beach Maine- but boy that water is COLD!!

  • THANKS for posting this BEST version. A great, enduring melody, with wonderful lyrics. I was about 10 when this song came out, and it remains one of my favorites.

  • Dedito arriba si ves este hermoso video en el 2012!

  • @VIPrincessMdC y escuchas este precioso tema en el 2012

  • Why, tell me why "music" nowadays cant reach this level of awesomeness !?

  • @DAHPL I know what you mean....all of the so called "artists" today suck! They don't know how to write melodies. The bands from years ago were very melodic, when they wrote a song there was 'bridge' to the song, there was a 'chorus' to the song, today it's all just a bunch of crap!

  • Naturally.....

  • This song gets me teary man >.<

  • so sad, but such a nice voice and clear singer....you can understand every single word

  • Makes you think about life, love and "your life". One of the songs I always go back to and reflect about what our lives are all about.

  • eres el mejor y lo sabes llamame 55277392

  • I always listening to that when I'm depressed....

  • gosh this is such an emotional sing

  • This is sort of an Irish blues song. The blues is about singing out your sadness thru expression and sometimes, if you can, injecting some black humour into it.

  • "In my hour of need, I truly am Indeed. Alone again...naturally" Damn if I haven't been there before. I like sad songs like this not to remain sad, but to remember when I was and be proud of how I came away from that bad time as a better person.

  • 1972 ? troop 437 plainedge New York... The things you think of.

  • Gilbert O'Sullivan introduced this song the year my father passed away. It will always be a reminder of that sad time in our lives. Thank you for posting.

Don't understand 399 dislikes. Maybe people who do not understand what the song is trying to say; or maybe people who do not wish to deal with reality.

    399 people have

  • i really like this song

  • i raised with that

  • Again

  • A brilliant masterpiece

of 70's archive , the only version worth listening to as the almost carousel feel sits perfectly with the sentiment

  • naturally...

  • Reminds me of all the parents, grandparents and siblings that passed away...and I'm still around........fuck.....

  • probably one of the saddest songs ever.

  • Difícil explicar con palabras mis sentimientos cuando escucho esta maravillosa canción...era mi canción preferida en los 70 y siempre la asocio a una chica de la que estaba profundamente enamorado! Hoy en día es difícil encontrar canciones con este nivel!

  • I've just recently discovered Gilbert's music and from now on love it. He is a very talented artist, his music is wonderful and timeless. I'm not from the original generation that first listened to Gilbert, but I'm now his fan as well

  • 399 Have no taste for good music.

  • OMG! I totally forgot about this song!! Beautiful :-)

  • mo god i missed my parents, i know i had obligation to help them but i can't do anything as of now especialy to my dad........

  • swett

  • Lip singing!

  • @waldenhouse NO

  • @chopsweldon OK, go get your 45rpm single, put in the deck, play it, and turn the sound down on this - perfectly 'synchronised' Funny That?

  • Reading some of the comments to video,I think a better take away from it is that we do grow as life progresses. Mothers, fathers passing, leaves us all to become what they raised us to become, they knew we needed to become fathers and mothers to our kids. Struggles is what we really come down too. All the bad we learn to accept and strive for the better in spite of.

  • haha oh my god their haaaaaaaaaaaair LOL

Hermosa ! ¡hermosa!

  • Beautiful song but man oh man is it ever so depressing. Even the melody resonates melancholy.

  • FUUUUUUUUCK

All my life I though it was the beatles on this BEAUTIFUL song!

  • @Thrasholocaust

Do you want to know why you feel as you do? B/C you are a grown-up!!!!

  • @TheMustangsally75

What do you mean with that? I am 20 years old. With your comment you want to mean I am an old geezer or that adult people don't know any other band/artist than the beatles?

  • I am 55. My parents are in their 80's. They are still with me, thank goodness!!! But I know there will be a day way too soon that they won't be. I miss them already, & I cry just thinking about it!!

  • @TheMustangsally75 My mom is no longer with me, my father still is but like you say, soon they won't be... I hope they meet again somewhere in paradise, God bless friend

  • Cheerful, bright and gay, gay used to mean happy. Now, if you use the word Gay wrong in a sentence, you never hear the end of it. Lighten up you pillow biters!

  • Classic 1970s music. I miss it so much. Glad so much is available on youtube etc

  • It's amazing how many people listen to this song almost every single day! Wow!

  • This song came back to memories yesterday, when I was eating a slice of sicilian pizza in Artichoke Pizza ,328 E14th Street, NYC. They play oldies and I always have a ball, savouring their delicious pizza and listening to these great songs from the '70s that way surpass all the current average music crap.

  • I love this song<3 I really wish I could find it somewhere

  • @mollymindfreak What do you mean Molly? You can easily download it, come on.

  • @IrmaMSQ Sorry i was talking about on vinyl :)

  • @mollymindfreak I see! Yes, that would be very hard to find!

  • So beautiful, yet so unbelievably horribly depressing. It was a number 1 hit song for many weeks in the early '70s. Everyone in America must have been seriously in need of anti-depression meds. Such overwhelming helplessness, especially when he thinks God has abandoned him. If I believed this perspective, I would be busy right now looking for a blade to slice my wrists. Fortunately, God does love us and has something better for us after this life. I feel badly for those who have no hope.

  • @bassethounddog Well, it does not depress me! Obviously, the writer, Gilver O'Sullivan went through a sad and depressing moment in his life, wrote the song but did not kill himself. We all go through depressing moments and might think of committing suicide but it doesn't mean we will do it. This did not happen to the writer, it doesn't have to happen to us either.

  • @IrmaMSQ Further, Tthe writer questions God's existence because things did not work out for him, which doesn't mean that God does not exist. It's the writer's female companion who deserted him. Despite the depressive feelings, it is a beautiful song in all aspects, including the images, comtemplating throwing himself from a tower, remembering when his dad passed away leaving his mom alone, who by the way, did not kill herself!

  • @bassethounddog Don't let it depress you, songs like this help me GET THROUGH loneliness/depression. That's what the beautiful melody and lyrics we can all relate to, are meant for. Try to let it do the same for you too.

  • @MarkinDC exactly, bcuz it expresses our emotions and eases the pressure

  • WHO THINKS GILBERT LOOK'S A BIT LIKE BRIAN MAY FROM QUEEN

  • Is he related to Michael Owen?

  • Alone again..???

  • this my place

  • @nick85taner it mean?

  • No it isn't - the original was in B&W and had him wearing an oversized flat cap!

  • A song that sadly, everybody can relate to at one time or another....

  • @841401 too true too many cheating women out there dont care if you trew your self from a tower block Some Gilbert or Raymond Edward Osulivan has a track " Out of the question " Wrote for me im convinsed !!

  • Forever alone :(

  • No way this song wasn't gonna be a big hit back in the day.

    I love YOUTUBE!

  • The best hairdo ever, ha ha ha!

  • Gilbert had a golden voice. One of the best.

  • Ah the good old seventies ...!

    I love this song.

It brings me back sweet childhood memories.

  • @TheNightflier70 i feel so old now...

  • Hearing this song as a young teen, I loved it but was not clued in to the full depth and meaning. I just liked it. Now I feel it and it reminds me of my family and the good times we had going places together. Pure, simple, flawless music.

  • man all of these people should listen to slipknot not this

  • Sarah Vaughan does a good version of this too.

  • I love this song so much I like singing it

  • this is my song - im a fucking friend-zoned for ever lol seriously - fuck love.

  • I dare anyone who tries to "look" like the acoustic guiar player, to also actually "play" guitar like him. No good music today at all it seems, with all the "talent" only remaking remakes of songs written and performed decades ago...by guys like Sullivan.

  • Love this song!

  • Beautiful memories of a time long ago... far away... never to return.

  • wow...so sad and beautiful...

  • I was in 1972 four year old when i heard this song first time and i loved it.... I love it still

  • such a tear jerker

  • Because he was cheerful, bright and gay :D

  • i love this song forever

  • i think i'm destined to be alone forever.

  • @NatacaBurnley Don't look too hard for someone. Your soulmate will find you when you least expect it.

  • @24765968 i'm not talking just about a soulmate..if i had people in my life, friends, family, someone to rely on i'd be more than happy..

  • Delicious to remember, many bitter sweet memories, a tear comes to the eye, same with Al Stewart year of the cat! Alas . . . I'd rather have the memories than not to have lived, loved and travelled!

  • its been nearly 4 years since i heard this song. It feels good to get back to memory lane :)

  • Forever Alone u.u

  • " This is the real deal LIVE with flutes and all." Tell me... does the real deal do this? 1:50 Great song though!!!

  • This song was #1 the week I was born, also. Love it. <3

  • What an awful song. Who could write and sing something like this...

  • @TheKerryzzz It's known as music , as having talent un-like say uhmmm rap and a lot of what pass's today as music.

  • @computerpurple yes, Ive heard some horrible and offensive rap as well.

  • @TheKerryzzz Life is not all happiness and rainbows.

Sometimes life can be very sad. And yet, we carry through with the grace of music.

  • Leaving me to doubt

Talk about God in His mercy

Who if He really does exist

    Why did He desert me?

    In my hour of need

    I truly am indeed

    Alone again, naturally

  • This was Number one hit the week I was born. Really fit with my soul, however that the first time ever I hear that song. How I missed it for so many years.

  • One of the best and most memorable songs ever...

  • This was the number one song the week I was born. It's somehow fitting.

  • Beautiful song! Thank you for posting.

  • Great memories from this one.Thank you.

  • love this song.

  • Forever Alone u_u

  • A great and somewhat Haunting song. Never leaves the brain no matter how much time passes.

  • No offense intended, not being a student of music, I want to ask why are there so many violinists in this video? I do love the sound of violins, and not being a musical student, I can only guess that its because they need that many to not be overwhelmed by the piano?

Just curious, and in no way am complaining; Im just interested in why the many violins?

    Thanks!

  • @viewer362 get real. it's just for aesthetics.

  • Makes me think of the Summer of `72 in Portland,Oregon.

  • I remember first hearing this, I must have been about 8 years old...I cried.

  • Beautiful song.

  • saudades destes tempos aí!!...acho que foi 1974!!..

  • Best song ever, make me think a lot... every single time!

  • I'm here because of The Virgin Suicides directed by Sophia Coppola. Groovin music...thumbs up.
