This has probably already been posted in this thred, but Gilbert was on a local radio show (in Indy) and revealed a bit from this song. The DJ said "Wow man, that must have really been horrible loosing your father and then your mother from a broken heart!". Gilbert said "Don't worry about it! I made it up! I was looking for a vehicle for a song for the album and I made up the story and wrote a hit song. That's all there was to it! :)

70's, summer vacation spent at camp at the beach at York Beach Maine, cut off shorts, t-shirt, converse sneakers, Shwinn bike, listening to this song on a transitor radio on an am rock station, the orange sun setting, cookout stove with boiled lobsters and bbq chicken filling the air with wonderful aromas, neighbors laughing and mosquito torches glowing, my parents were young and healthy and alive and happy. Music like this is the soundtrack to wonderful memories that will never die.

So beautiful, yet so unbelievably horribly depressing. It was a number 1 hit song for many weeks in the early '70s. Everyone in America must have been seriously in need of anti-depression meds. Such overwhelming helplessness, especially when he thinks God has abandoned him. If I believed this perspective, I would be busy right now looking for a blade to slice my wrists. Fortunately, God does love us and has something better for us after this life. I feel badly for those who have no hope.

We all go through depressing moments and might think of committing suicide but it doesn't mean we will do it. This did not happen to the writer, it doesn't have to happen to us either.
