I find it hilarious so many people get so upset Anka does this. He's prone to parodying himself and his very specific singing style by taking the songs that he likes, which are completely outside his range, and bringing them in to show how outrageous the carryover is (in this case, the unusual lyrics), while still keeping the rhythm attached. Props for picking something that he probably knew that the fans of the old probably would go insane over his choice.
Absolutely love it and I don't even like the previous versions. bought the CD Eye of a Tiger and Jump are really good on it. Paul Anka is a genius. Did a search on him and he has done everything you can think of. He did the music for many movies. One being "The Longest Day"
The orchestra does a MAGNIFICENT job emulating the wild crashing guitar work of the original towards the end! To see him proclaiming "a mosquito, my libido" it's a riot!
@lancekoz the song sounds like a white guy finding out that his ex girlfriend is pregnant with her new black boyfriend, so he says "A mulatto! An albino! A mosquito, my libido!" So she dumped him for her horny drug dealer and ended up pregnant. She's overbored and self assured, oh know, I know, a dirty word.
Paul Anka's diction is perfect. I listened to this song a million times and i never new half the lyrics. Actually pretty profound if you put it in the Curt Cobain mindset.
Paul Anka has written many great songs for many great artists most of which were huge hits. He alos wrote My Way for Frank Sinatra. In addition to that he also had success with his own solo career. He is not just singing these great songs in swing style. He also wrote & arranged the music for the orchestra. So for people who say they can sing better than him on this page 1) Bear all of the above in mind. 2) Prove it! Upload you singing this song in this style on Youtube and let us judge!!
People can hate this all they want, but as a .. well, probably biggest Nirvana fan, I have to say.. I enjoy this.. I LOVE seeing ANY sort of somewhat good nirvana song being covered into a new fashion. I would much rather this being a Nirvana song than Lady Gaga or any other new artist.
@SrJoben Those "weird lyrics"are arranged to paint a mental picture for most listeners in the same way poems try to do. Many of these linked together words are open to different interpretations. For instance the mosquito could be a self deprecating reference to his own genitalia, together with the word libido kind of supports that image in your mind doesn't it? It's fun! Now...go smoke some weed and listen to it again.
awesome, I´m a huge fan of nirvana, and at the beginning I thought it was just the same title, but out of curiosity I entered and watched the video, and to my surprise it was the same song XDDD but in a completely different way...and I liked it, not as much as the original, but still it has something extremely cool , thumbs up!~
This was great! I'm a tremendous fan of the original - I never get tired of listening to Nirvana - but this is what a cover of someone elses can be at its best. Its a totally different take on the song - it swings instead of rocks, etc, but it has its own integrity. Of course, its totally ironic which is something Nirvana understood, too - but from a different angle. This also felt sleazy, but in a really good way.
@brokenpine284 I think you got that joke backwards, I just read a version of it in The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe. Supposed to be like this. "Earth has developed a slight eccentricity in it's orbit. This is due to Kurt Cobain spinning in his grave."
Kurt would have freaking loved this because he could not stand playing this song anymore and would do everything he could to mess it up while playing it. The best of all time was when he was on some TV show in Sweden and sang it like he was in slow motion.
yes, you are right that Cobain hated this song, & even left it out of both MTV Unplugged & out of Live Tonight Sold Out! If you buy either of those DVDs you will notice that Smells Like Teen Spirit, their biggest hit, is either not on there at all (MTV Unplugged) or completely butchered and ridiculed (Live Tonight Sold Out!) The reason that he hated this song so much is because he did write the lyrics to it.
@OzKnosis ofc he did! the only reason they wouldn't play it was because people thought smwlls were the only nirvana song so they decided to skip it and show what more they could offer! if you see a 1993 interview nirvana says that their first song written together was on in utero and is called scentless aprentice
bullshit. Cobain HATED the song Smells Like Teen Spirit. You don't shortchange millions of fans for no good reason. He left it completely off MTV Unplugged, and put only parodies on Live! Tonight! Sold OUt! They wanted him to sing it for the VMA awards show, he refused. He liked the parodies that Al Yankovich and Tori Amos did of it because he hated it anyway.
@OzKnosis well he did write the lyrics, but think about it. you make them lyrics and thet's what all the fans wanna hear... after a while you get pretty tired of the song, so yeah on one show he said "yeah, we're gonna skip that one" that does not change the fact that he wrote it! even on nirvana's documentary on nevermind the producer talked about how good kurt was writing lyrics especially on smells cause he captured the essence of 90's teens.
@remyglessi wake the fuck up, Cobain hated SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT immediately. IMMEDIATELY, as in , AS SOON AS IT CAME OUT, because he did not write the lyrics to it, and wanted LITHIUM, which he did write, to be the number one song on the record. You will not see one video of Cobain enjoying singing Smells Like Teen Spirit and singing it with any emotion. Not one . THe original, official MTV single version, which made it famous,is the only time he ever sang it with any conviction.
@remyglessi no, he hated the song right away , as soon as he realized that it was the most popular song on the record. He almost had a nervous breakdown when he got back from Europe and found out that Teen Spirit had gone mega huge on MTV in the States. He thought he was doomed to be the next Milli Vanilli scandal and the original writer was going to come forward and destroy him.
@remyglessi shut the fuck up u illiterate little puke. Cobain is not your god, he lied about writing the lyrics to his two biggest hits. Go cry to mommy.
@OzKnosis Wow, that was a very good burn! for me to go cry to my mommy, i must say i really cannot top that! anyway it does not change my opinion that anyone believing that patchetic canadian is idiots
@Pumpkingilmour THIS IS A FINAL MESSAGE: FUCK OFF! I DON'T CARE IF YOU GUYS BELIEVE A CANADIAN WROTE BOTH COME AS YOU ARE OR SMELLE LIKE TEEN SPIRIT. I PERSONALLY THINK KURT COBAIN HAD THE BALLS TO SAY IF HE WROTE IT OR NOT. YOU GUYS PROBABLY THINK THAT THE BEATLES WERE GIRLS HUH? IT IS JUST AS MUCH TRUTH IN THERE AS IN KURT COBAIN DID NOT WRITE THESE SONGS. kURT COBAIN WAS A BRILLIANT SONG WRITER. HE WAS HIS GENERATION'S JOHN LENNON! AND YOU GUYS ARE OUKING ON HIM WITH THIS SHIT! FUCK OFF!
@Tapicero111 go suck Tiger Woods off. Cobain never played a decent live version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Go look at every youtube of him singing his biggest hit. He hates singing it , and has no emotion in EVERY SINGLE video of it. Smells Like Teen Spirit WAS HIS NEW SHIT when he started refusing to play it and whenever he did play it, did a lousy job of it like he hated singing it at all.
@Tapicero111 Cobain did not write THE LYRICS to Smells Like Teen Spirit. He created the song by creating music for the lyrics, & even the idea for the music was suggested to him: the main riff of Boston's 'More than a Feeling'.
The song was brand new & he fucked around with it all the time. He hated it with a passion. Not because he was sick of it. He had songs that were years older than Smells Like Teen Spirit that he never got sick of singing. He hated Teen Spirit because he did not write it
you act as if the song was only skipped once. It was continuously disparaged and parodied and excluded by Cobain. It was a brand new fucking song. Nirvana was only around for a couple of years. Stop repeating the official line like a brainwashed sheep and look at all the other facts. here is the link: remove the spaces
oh, and I am also glad the 'thumbs down' feature is disabled here so that the little Cobain disciples don't work themselves up into a frothing little frenzy over it.
hey OzKnosis why do you tell people to keep an open mind and the same time state with impunity that Cobain didn't write the lyrics as if you know for sure that he didn't? you said there's no conclusive proof yet you have no qualms about posting shit like "Cobain DIDNOT WRITE THEM FUCK OFF FUCK OFF". Were you there? do you know with certainty that he stole them? why are you so willing to take the words spewed by some internet dude as canon?
Ah, fuck off with your 'dude this' and 'dude that'. It sounds like something a glue sniffer would say.
no one is saying Cobain 'stole' anything. He was GIVEN the lyrics in 1986, and for me there is enough proof and evidence that what the writer is saying is true, and its also enough to make me want to bid you fuck off, dude. This insane hysteria surrounding Cobain as some sort of christ figure, when his two biggest hits were not even written by him? Its a fucking joke.
I found this impassioned thread on the part of OzKnosis fascinating, so I checked out his suggested search "The true story behind the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit". OzKnosis, apparently you're Canadian, and it so happens that this Trumpelstilt who posted the story is also Canadian. Are you acquainted with Trumpelstilt? It seems that you must be, and trust him implicitly, if you so adamantly defend his story. How would I know this story is true, and not imagination, or just a lie?
there has been no concrete proof in the form a witness coming forward yet, the whole thing is still being researched, but everything in the story checks out, right down to the Melvins being in Calgary at the time that the real writer was in nearby Banff. There is no motive for this to be a lie, and it would have been impossible for someone to construct this from scratch, yet have so many of the facts later uncovered (four years later) corroborate exactly what he has been saying all along
I come across as impassioned and adamant when dealing with the impassioned and adamant crap that is hurled at me, especially when so much of it is both factually inaccurate and arrogant at the same time.
I agree, impassioned arguments must be used, especially in the face of so much adversity. I find it all hard to believe, but stranger things have happened. Thanks for posting, I'll keep an eye out on this story.
that is all I ask of people. To keep an open mind and consider the information fully, instead of automatically rejecting anything that they wish wasn't true , and grasping at straws to deny reality regardless of the facts.
who gives a fuck if he wrote those damn lyrics or not?? other folks were saying that the main riffs of "come as you are" and "smells like teen spirit" were "borrowed" from boston and another band. WHO GIVES A FUCk? i know i don't, cause the fact is that he managed to turn those simple riffs into great hits and that's all that really matters
I agree with you,I keep asking the same question, why are people getting so upset when they find that Cobain didn't write the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit or Come As You Are?The way they react is as if someone is saying that Cobain never existed or never sang those songs or made them famous.Grow up all you stunned fucks out there,He hated those songs anyway,so what the fuck is your major malfunction in accepting that he didn't write the fucking stuff? HE DID NOT WRITE THEM.FUCK THE FUCK OFF
it wasn't Cobain who wrote the lyrics. He hated this song. He was given the lyrics in 1986, then formed Nirvana the same year. They put out Bleach, which was all their own except for the cover song 'Love Buzz', which was a Robbie van Leeuwen song. Cobain needed material for the next record, tried to rewrite the lyrics given him in '86. but gave up and recorded them with only a couple of the words changed, to cash in on the racial tension of the time. He disowned the song almost immediately.
no , he did not write the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit. He recorded it five years after being given the lyrics because he needed material for a big record deal he'd signed with Geffen, and decided to cash in on the racial and sexual overtones of the song. Once he was rich, he decided he hated the song and it really 'wasn't him' , so he disowned it, and in the process pissed off millions of people, including nis bosses at the record company
I had to admit, I was horrified when I first heard this version, but as I listened to it it sort of grew on me... Not really my type of music, but certainly not a bad version by any means!
I love this arrangement, it swings and does justice to Cobain's lyrics. I used to wonder how Anka was so passionate when he finishes with "my libido!", then I realized, he is probably wishing he still had one.
@jtmac40 Cobain did not even write the lyrics to this song.He hated Smells Like Teen Spirit as soon as it became a huge hit, and tried to fuck up the video shoot for it. He purposely recorded it so that most people could not hear the lyrics. Anka likes the lyrics because they are about the zombies who demand to be entertained with whatever freak show will fill up their empty lives.
Kurt would be very cool with this. Because he's getting the respect from other types of artists. I'm a rocker metal head but I love Johnny Cash as well. Its mutual respect. Kurt has always loved all styles of music.
Cobain did not write the lyrics to this song, and he eventually hated it and wished he'd never recorded it. He refused to play it at some concerts because he had lied about writing it and about writing Come As You Are. He hated himself. search 'the true story behind the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit' for more information
This is awesome. People who think the song needs "angst" need to realize this is a different take on the song and that power is still there, just in a more subtle, less "omg Im angry and you can tell because of all the distortion" kind of way. Not to discredit the original, but certainly to discredit those who can't read subtlety in music.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what what what what what what what what the the the the the the fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck is this????????????wtf wtf wtf?? poor kurt man for the love of god
This is amazing. I think it shows the effect that Nirvana and this song has had on the world of music. I mean, when your song is covered by one of the 'rat pack', it shows that you have reach out from your own genre and have affected the whole music industry.
Nothin will beat the original, but this is an amazing alternative!
Sorry, but I think Paul might not have realized what this song is about.

OzKnosis 1 year ago
@remyglessi no, he hated the song right away , as soon as he realized that it was the most popular song on the record. He almost had a nervous breakdown when he got back from Europe and found out that Teen Spirit had gone mega huge on MTV in the States. He thought he was doomed to be the next Milli Vanilli scandal and the original writer was going to come forward and destroy him.

@OzKnosis yeah, and you are a stupid shit?

IT IS JUST AS MUCH TRUTH IN THERE AS IN KURT COBAIN DID NOT WRITE THESE SONGS. kURT COBAIN WAS A BRILLIANT SONG WRITER. HE WAS HIS GENERATION'S JOHN LENNON! AND YOU GUYS ARE OUKING ON HIM WITH THIS SHIT! FUCK OFF!

@remyglessi get a grip. Cobain did not write the lyrics to two of his biggest songs. Don't cry.
The songs would never have existed without him.

@OzKnosis he didnt hate the song u fucking idiot he just got tired of playing live he wanted to play his new shit...get your facts right you fuckhead
Tapicero111 1 year ago
@Tapicero111 go suck Tiger Woods off. Cobain never played a decent live version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Go look at every youtube of him singing his biggest hit. He hates singing it , and has no emotion in EVERY SINGLE video of it. Smells Like Teen Spirit WAS HIS NEW SHIT when he started refusing to play it and whenever he did play it, did a lousy job of it like he hated singing it at all.
OzKnosis 1 year ago
@Tapicero111 Cobain did not write THE LYRICS to Smells Like Teen Spirit. He created the song by creating music for the lyrics, & even the idea for the music was suggested to him: the main riff of Boston's 'More than a Feeling'.
The song was brand new & he fucked around with it all the time. He hated it with a passion. Not because he was sick of it. He had songs that were years older than Smells Like Teen Spirit that he never got sick of singing. He hated Teen Spirit because he did not write it
OzKnosis 1 year ago
you act as if the song was only skipped once. It was continuously disparaged and parodied and excluded by Cobain. It was a brand new fucking song. Nirvana was only around for a couple of years. Stop repeating the official line like a brainwashed sheep and look at all the other facts. here is the link: remove the spaces

hey OzKnosis why do you tell people to keep an open mind and the same time state with impunity that Cobain didn't write the lyrics as if you know for sure that he didn't? you said there's no conclusive proof yet you have no qualms about posting shit like "Cobain DIDNOT WRITE THEM FUCK OFF FUCK OFF". Were you there? do you know with certainty that he stole them? why are you so willing to take the words spewed by some internet dude as canon?
Keep an open mind dude.
seifer8810029 2 years ago

How would I know this story is true, and not imagination, or just a lie?
marcoamedrano 2 years ago
there has been no concrete proof in the form a witness coming forward yet, the whole thing is still being researched, but everything in the story checks out, right down to the Melvins being in Calgary at the time that the real writer was in nearby Banff. There is no motive for this to be a lie, and it would have been impossible for someone to construct this from scratch, yet have so many of the facts later uncovered (four years later) corroborate exactly what he has been saying all along
OzKnosis 2 years ago
I come across as impassioned and adamant when dealing with the impassioned and adamant crap that is hurled at me, especially when so much of it is both factually inaccurate and arrogant at the same time.

I agree, impassioned arguments must be used, especially in the face of so much adversity. I find it all hard to believe, but stranger things have happened. Thanks for posting, I'll keep an eye out on this story.
marcoamedrano 2 years ago
that is all I ask of people. To keep an open mind and consider the information fully, instead of automatically rejecting anything that they wish wasn't true , and grasping at straws to deny reality regardless of the facts.

Kurt Cobain did not write the lyrics to this song. The official story is wrong, he was
given the song in '86, tried to rewrite it in his journals, gave up,recorded it, and then hated
it just months after recording it, not because he was sick of it.He hated it because he did
not write it&it was attracting people he didn't agree with politically.

who gives a fuck if he wrote those damn lyrics or not?? other folks were saying that the main riffs of "come as you are" and "smells like teen spirit" were "borrowed" from boston and another band. WHO GIVES A FUCk? i know i don't, cause the fact is that he managed to turn those simple riffs into great hits and that's all that really matters
Calinn86 2 years ago
I agree with you,I keep asking the same question, why are people getting so upset when they find that Cobain didn't write the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit or Come As You Are?The way they react is as if someone is saying that Cobain never existed or never sang those songs or made them famous.Grow up all you stunned fucks out there,He hated those songs anyway,so what the fuck is your major malfunction in accepting that he didn't write the fucking stuff? HE DID NOT WRITE THEM.FUCK THE FUCK OFF

oz come on now..we all know who wrote the lyrics.
yortramc69 2 years ago
it wasn't Cobain who wrote the lyrics.
OzKnosis 2 years ago
oz go suck a cock..he did write the song and lyrics.

keep your gay fantasies to yourself. Cobain DID NOT write the lyrics to this song.

oz your wrong, your writing paragraph long lies.
yortramc69 2 years ago
he did right the song, and i don't have to write a paragragh to tell you this.
yortramc69 2 years ago
no , he did not write the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit.

FaerieDust 2 years ago
Of course way better than Nirvana. The nirvana's version is just... noise and poor quality recording. This is the listenable version all the way.
( And hey, I am a heavy metal lover)
Before marking my comment as bad, just try to think, empty minds.

I love this arrangement, it swings and does justice to Cobain's lyrics. I used to wonder how Anka was so passionate when he finishes with "my libido!", then I realized, he is probably wishing he still had one.
jtmac40 2 years ago 2

This is amazing. I think it shows the effect that Nirvana and this song has had on the world of music. I mean, when your song is covered by one of the 'rat pack', it shows that you have reach out from your own genre and have affected the whole music industry.
Nothin will beat the original, but this is an amazing alternative!
