Honestly, I couldn't think of a better song to depict the emotional state in which House is in that scene. A man trapped inside a crippled and drug addicted body who longs only for some sort of happiness in his life.
Truly a magnificent song, a magnificent scene and an incredible actor.
The beauty in this scene, is the end, which should be good because he's not dead, but it almost as bad as death, because his soul is sick, doped and scarred
I like the original by Arcade Fire better, but that wouldn't have suited this scene. The lyrics are most important and the sober mood of the song, and Gabriel articulates the lyrics better/more, whereas AF's original is much more dramatic with the music.
I love this scene :) I hadn't expected that epic twist. I was like 'ZOMG WTF' until the very last second until he said CANNONBAAAALL!
This scene just made me fall in love with House again
But still - DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME (or anywhere). At this height you'd definitely hit the ground of the pool real hard. I jumped off a much lower bridge into a much deeper river last summer just for the kick, hit the ground and cut my leg open on a rock. The same summer a 12 year old died at the same spot because of a head dive. Get your adrenaline elsewhere! (like asking a Hillybilly out or sthg)
poignant, I suffer from chronic pain and illness and this, well, it says it all. There is no joy, no feeling and you try to fill that void. don't know if we ever do
what an impact!!! i agree with all the comments; it´s the best secuence in house ever: Chilling, dramatic in the best way, epic, could be the show´s climax; the duality between images and music are perfect. awesome direction, awesome acting, terrific edition... what else: Brilliant!
The only reason I download the Peter Gabriel Album Scratch my back (full of covers like this) was this song, great scene, House is so desperate to find something that moves his soul that he jumps it reminds me to a Charly Garcia he did the same thing and yes I still get chills when I hear the song it's so dead on on what's happening on House mind.
Even though this is the 4th or 5th time I've watched this scene, I STILL got chills!! ... every time. THAT'S how good it is! And trust me ... I don't get chills easily! ;)
i just watched this episode.... and omg when i saw him climbing... so much emotion came and i started crying.... this scene was brilliant! done soooooo BEAUTIFULLY.... and the music.... i swear i almost had a heart attack.
@wickedliza503 it's probably that he's upset over cuddy. the lyrics go "my body is a cage, that keeps me dancing from the one i love." house's body, more specifically his leg, keeps him from "dancing" with cuddy.
i think he realized that he can't always live life being miserable. i think he's trying to have fun, but being as miserable as he is and being who he is, he has to do something big, something crazy, something over the top.
This was an amazing scene! The show should get an Emmy for this scene alone. I was screaming NOOOOOOOO! up until the very last minute. And then I was laughing my ass off, lol.
I thought Wilson was going to show up last minute and snatch him away from the balcony and when he just ... jumped.. my jaw dropped! Then when he said "cannonball!" I literally screamed out "YOU SON OF A BITCH" and then I started to laugh haha ohh man I was sweating bullets.
This was seriously an emotional scene! God I love House<3
Did anyone else notice that he fell into the water on his left side, yet when it showed him under water he was falling on his right side? Just an interesting tidbit of information. I love House. Without Hugh Laurie, this show would be nothing.
I still have a pit in my stomach watching it....the song breaks my heart. Peter Gabriel did an amazing cover of that song. I know Hugh Laurie is the king of wordless expression--he can say thousands of things without saying a word. RSL just earned his rank in those final moments (of course with the exclusion of Noooooo). Even if he could see House's trajectory when we couldn't,he looked like he would go cry or throw up. Definitely disturbed esp after losing Amber.
Would have been an epic ending to a great show. This is just a tease going for the shock effect. Everything that can be said about House has already been said, so his suicide is the only logical conclusion. Everything have been building up to this for 7 seasons. I doubt the producers have the stones to end it that way though...
This is the most invoking scene ever. It's the kind of scene that could have ended the series, had it finished in mid-air. They used this scene in season 7 and I was amazed, I had to watch it, over, and over, and over, and over again. I still have the same feeling every time I watch it. This scene is on a grand scale that no other show could compare. Now I'm left asking myself...HOW WILL IT END???
When he stepped on the railing I started yelling at the TV "No! House, don't do it!!!"
Also, House is becoming more destructive than his last run-in with his addiction. His patient merely became a source of entertainment for him not regarding his well-being whatsoever. The final scene where Foreman yells up to House in the viewing booth "It worked, House!" and he simply replies with "I heard you." and an unsatisfied look like he was expecting more to go wrong..for his simple thrills
the messed up hotel room reminds me of inception. gotta love it when he smiles, he is trying to feel "alive" and he just realized he is an adrenaline junky like the bull rider earlier in the episode
I second that the extra in the bottom left corner at 2:26 is the most unenthusiastic and worthless extra there has ever been. He's just...so half-hearted. Like they redid the take a dozen times and he was just going through motions. Or he has no soul. Personally I'm sticking with the latter.
@Cooluyo - True, but not just House... this song is amazing. Ha ha. I don't care so much for the voice, but the MUSIC... MY GAWD! AMAZING!! I wish more artists would produce dramatic orchestrated pieces like this.
The great thing about this is how many ways there are to interpret it. Was this a happy overcoming of his demons, a discovery of real happiness for himself - within himself - finally? Or is this just more thrill seeking, denoting that now the only way he can experience excitement or joy is to risk his own wellbeing? Is this a good sign, or a sign that he's getting worse and becoming reckless? How far will he go for his "fix?" Or was this him finding a way out of that conundrum? We'll see...
@tipoomaster well, i thought about it , and it would be a pretty good finale. now it can´t be because they wasted their chance, obviously. but it has to end someday. and to a character like house, i think it the most beautiful ending would be suicide, showing that we would never achieve happiness.
@pedroleonelsilva I get what you mean, and after the hallucinations in the (last?) season, I thought they were gonna off him in this episode. Would have been beautiful.
I thought that smile that House had on his face on the edge of balcony was the final good bye to his interminable pains , but I was wrong. That smile was a show of his victory over whatever held him back from being free (Of course, I don't want House to be an addict again though...)
Beautiful... is just so amazing, so meaningful, so powerful. His smile under the water is just... OMG, I HAVE NO WORDS. After all that fucking lame season... THANK YOU WRITERS!
This episode and entire season felt weird, but this ending was awesome beyond belief.
What do you do when you win? Party. What do you do when you lose? Party harder.
