The dog that was pts in VS's show was not a required killing. The dogs groomer begged the owners for her as the dog adored her and she had NO problems with the dog. Agree with most of what Robert said.
Do you want to be in a class where the instructor is a behaviourist?! What happened to good (qualified) dog trainers?
And a behaviourist who has a degree in human psychology and who has not trained a dog? That could happen.
Does Robert not realise that by ignoring a dog's bad behaviour (within control) IS a form of punishment! I know that and I haven't got a degree! Doesn't say much for behaviourists!
@CrueLoaf Did you listen to the interview at all..? There are myriad 'behaviourist' and 'dog trainer' qualifications out there which aren't worth the paper they are written on.
Robert would also advocate in the vast majority of circumstances that ignoring bad behaviour and rewarding good behaviour is absolutely the right course of action, but if you don't know there are certain situations and circumstances where bad behaviour CANNOT be ignored then you know very little about dog training..
@kejaan If you CANNOT ignore the bad behaviour, then MANAGE it...then ignore (P-)! Tether points, leads, muzzles, time outs. You then DO NOT set up the dog for failure.
That's the way I work anyway. Alternative methods are also used.
i dont like what he is implying! look at all of victorias success, it was just that one dog, and remember the vet agreed with her decision because the thing that caused the dog to be put down was an UPROVOKED MAULING on a 6 YEAR OLD GIRL. he need to shut up, he is just jelouse that he isnt making as much or as successful. also who is he to talk he said that he is a dog trainer becasue he has had a dog! victoria had a business dealing with dogs before becoming a trainer
What makes you think that's not one dog too many..? The trainer in question caused a dog to be executed because she was not capable of changing that dog's behaviour. Not only that, she could have referred the dog to a more capable and experienced trainer or even recommended that the dog be rehomed to an experienced owner who didn't have children.
The show AND the trainer set the dog up to fail, and when it inevitably did she had it killed.
@georgiabeastx As you've mentioned her name, Victoria Stilwell was an unemployed actress who became a dog walker in South West London, then she went to the States and surprise-surprise came back as a 'Dog Behaviourist'. You'd have to ask her exactly what qualifications she came back from the States with to qualify her as a 'Dog Behaviourist'..
This guy is just jealous of stilwell because she's naturally talented and likable. He's right when he says anyone can set themselves up as a dog trainer, because its mostly common sense. At the end of the day he's not happy that he's devoted his life to his "career" and stilwell can do it just as well and with more style. Obvious pushing the boundaries of the law on slander.. sour grapes. Also even if your training techniques are better than stilwell's shes much easier on the eye.
@moosie1971 i was wondering that too - when he said 'glamorous' i thought he meant victoria stilwell, but i couldnt find any info on a lawsuit taken out against her on the web.... what other dog trainer is 'glamorous'? i cant think of another dog trainer on channel 4 either...
He never said what channel she was on, plus I doubt he would say who the person was or which channel the person appeared on for possible legal reasons.

Sorry but a very negative talk IMO.

@CrueLoaf Define 'manage', because it sounds to me like if you are 'managing' bad behaviour then you are not ignoring it..
I'd love to know what circumstances you have in mind which set a dog up for failure if you don't ignore an instance of bad behaviour..
