George Washington is probably turning over in his grave wondering how some Americans could get this simple sentence he and the other founding fathers wrote so confused. The important part is the second half, since the first is giving some basic reasoning as to why it was written. The right to bear arms shall not be infringed. Means we can have whatever ARMS we want, and it is not to be touched. Probably the simplest law ever written.

The US Constitution never grants any rights to the people. The purpose of the Bill of Rights is to recognize and defend the rights the people hold. The ninth amendment states, "The enumeration of certain rights in the constitution shall not be construed to deny or disparage others held by the people". This is a statement of principle and a reiteration of the concept of unalienable rights referred to in the Declaration of Independance. That's my understanding.
