  • I could be wrong so don't hate on me but. Isnt this the battle of Verdun?

  • If there was one war I could fight in history, it would have been WWI

  • 0PhysX0 : You're a poor guy! Millions of people are dead! You'd be a place you will not have two days then reflected Advent talking! You would love someone in your family is there? Just so you understand the horror of this war! Poor idiot! I am French and I love my country and people like you make me puke! Go hang yourself!

  • It Is Sooo Fun When The Germans Killing frenchiesss ...

  • ca tombe comme des petits pains

  • Why they run to bullets? And get killed by only a machine gun?

  • When the French saw the German's machine guns firing, they should lay down immediately to crawl......

  • @GoToHell987987 and then be shot as sitting ducks by the German riflemen?

    Yes, great plan.

  • @THthefirst Lay down would be more suitable as it reduced the accuracy for the Germans

  • @GoToHell987987 but what were the men supposed to do? Just spend the rest of the war lying down in no man's land? And how would that protect against artillery fire that would rake no mans land?

What you fail to appreciate is that in most areas, the Germans had the high ground, so could see into no mans land.

  • @THthefirst I didn't mean that they should lay for the rest of the war, just want to say that they should protect themselves and don't run to the bullets. The French artillery should attack the German trench to reinforce the infantry attack.

  • @GoToHell9879 Sure, but we are all stupid, so we are frenchs :)

  • Hard to imagine, but the Germans lost even more men than the French during the Somme! No wonder they called the battle "Sommeschlacht"...

I've just read the book Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger and I can highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the soldier's life of the western front.

There was no "good" or "evil" in this war. The German soldiers were suffering just as much as the British and the French. Don't forget their sacrifice as well :)

  • My great grand father was here, in Verdun. And he lived until 1962.. Lot of respect papy.

  • with out british support in 1914 the german attact would have gained paris!! incorrect the british professional army only slight compared to the french stifled the german army in a fighting withdrawal towards the marne and was by far the supierior force, however britains army was soon reduced to nothing and by the somme the french army were by leagues the better having adapted at verdun

  • poor bastards..

  • j'habite dans la somme on retrouve tous les mois des obus et plein de salopries dans le genre ca devait être horrible...

  • there is no sense in this attack...

  • @vittutuu there is no sense in this war

  • @661Sunshine touche

  • @661Sunshine you´re right! there is no sense...

  • a war that should NEVER be repeated ever

  • the youngest person to goto war was 14

  • because of ww2 the french have the image of being cowards, but in ww1 they occupied over 6000 miles of trench lines and held their ground most of the time.

  • @confusedhebru if you knew anything about the Battle of France and how it played out, you would know that cowardice has fuck all to do with the French defeat. In hindsight, you can always attribute military victories or defeat to a variety of factors. Bravery or cowardice can certainly manifest themselves during battle but they do not affect the grand scheme of things, especially in a war that involved millions.

  • Aside from the germans, the french suffered the heaviest loses of the allies, in early 1917 they mutineed against any further attacks against the germans but i dont blame them. The British took over the offensive duties culminating in the 3rd battle of Ypres aka Battle of Passchendaele in summer 1917 and the Battle of Amien in 1918 b4 the americans joined in that same year.

  • why wld the french charge at the enemy? i wld get snipers to snipe those gunners out first and then attack

  • @smegel1 welcome to world war 1

  • @smegel1

Heh, rifles don't have an unlimited range. And machine gunners only pop there heads out when enemies are in range. Ya should really learn to shoot an actual sniper rifle and see just how many times it takes to adjust your scope to get a shot right. Like me of course :P

  • @smegel1 guy, this is not a game.. You should visit the former battlefront, thenyou'll conclue this.

  • the somme was relitavley easy for the french. the british got wiped off the face of the earth. good vid though

  • trench warfare.................war of attrition

  • Historical records show that the French made significant gains during the first day of the Somme learning lessons from Verdun. They started later than the British and by the Close of Day where further ahead. A valuable lesson was learned by the French, however ignorant British Generals sent thousands to the Big Sleep.Echos of today in Afganistan ignorance is bliss for generals, its the salt of the earth (British soldiers) that pay the ultimate price.

  • @cedlticboy The French did do well on their first day. Although over time the French encountered heavier resistance and had many of the same problems as the British. Importantly however this battle did not go for one day. Over the coming months the British learned, adapted and eventually won the battle of the Somme. The Somme and Verdun represent the lowest points of the war strageically and tactically. After both operations the Anlgo-French learn important lessons toward final victory

  • ITS THE ASSHOLE GERMANS WHO YOU NEED TO INSULT NOT OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS.WE WOULD HAVE BEEN SCREWED IN WW2 WITHOUT THEM .PERHAPS IDIOTS LIKE YOU WOULD HAVE MADE GOOD HITLER BOOT LICKERS IF YOU HAD BEEN AROUND THEN.

  • what movie is this from?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!??!!

  • do people agree with this statement. WW1 was worse for the soldiers and WW2 was worse for the civilians?

  • @sshields14able both of the wars were devastating for any human being, it was pure carnage and torture for everyone

the difference is that WW1 was fought in trenches far from bigger cities and villages and WW2 was fought everywhere, but still...

  • I can't believe that it took someone 30 years after this war to realise that people could have just TOOK, FUCKING, COVER. I know that this was the style of combat in this time, but it just isn't right for people to walk into machine guns, snipers, artillery, and gas thinking that nothing is wrong!

  • Take fucking cover? Where?

    Then what?

Wait until artillery begins to rain down?

Eventually you will have to move.

When you do move you will be gunned down by the Germans who would have time to prepare.

    If you stopped, you died.

  • because it's a stupid order...

  • "attack, before we 're all slaughtered"...

    loool....

  • @Rostokouban what does LOOOL mean?

  • @peterwilliams6 lots of of of laughts

  • @peterwilliams6 or laugh out out out loud

  • all killing people does in war, is to convince nations to surrender.

  • That is fucked up...impossible to even contemplate as reality...

  • @Harvest8888 slaughters like this caused the french army to mutiny in mid 1917. from then on they only defended their line from german attacks. with the exception of one attack along the argonne forest in the last month of the war with the americans the French never attacked the germans in a major battle.

  • the detective looks like borat

  • after watching this- i respect the french more.

  • @stringerboi thanks man

  • @stringerboi

Only for the WW1 France lost 1,700,000 soldiers

The maximum for The USA in all his wars are 350,000 during the WW2 (RIP for all these deaths of course it is not the question)

& France is more of 1600 years of wars to build the largest country in the Western Europe surrounded in all its sides by enemies

One says in French "La France s'est construite par la force de ses épées" (France was built by the Force of its swords)

all these only are enough to impose the respect no ? :-)

  • @cumbas ww1 was the dumbest most unnecassary war in history. it was western civilization committing suicide.

  • @stringerboi the french took the brunt of the german attacks in both wars...educate yourself on the toll both these wars took on France before you act is the french had to earn your respect

  • @CacaLauncher23 Your comment was by far the most confusing and idiotic of comments i have read here. There was no real reason to type what you typed other than to troll and start shit. I said what i said because it gives you a physical inkling of what it must have been like back then. I am fully versed on both world wars, and the ramifications of such on all of Europe, not just France.

Now reply like a predictable little troll

  • @stringerboi Your comment implied you respected the french less, no? But after them seeing them get mowed down in some movie, the french somehow earn your 'respect'...as if the men who went through that butchery of a war didn't deserve our utmost respect BY DEFAULT, especially from douchebags like yourself. You're clearly one of those ignorant yanks who thought the french were cowards.

Btw, playing Medal of Honors and watchign Band of Brothers does not make you versed on both world wars.

  • @CacaLauncher23 You assume much and know very little. Trolls like you make me sick. BTW i dont play console games so dont presume to think im a fat halo playing fucknut. I have never served in the world wars, but i have read alot on it, and i already know you know very little compared to me. Like i said earlier which you ignored- seeing the clip made me respect them more because of the VISUAL nature of their sacrifice.BTW im in the DEP i ship out in 6 months. Play with some1 else troll.

    The End

  • @stringerboi Funny how you say I assumme too much then immediatly proceed to assume that you know more than I do on this subect, which I highly doubt. If you read anything, you wouldn't have the reading comprehension of a fucking baboon and my point would've gone over your head...twice. And wtf is "DEP" and why am I suppose to give a shit?

  • @CacaLauncher23 "and wtf is DEP"

that says it all. Your comments are worthless and have no purpose but to start shit like a little schoolgirl whos bored at home.

    The End troll

  • @stringerboi your obscure local acronynms are irrelevant...you self-absorbed little bitch

  • thank you france either though we h8 each other's guts but this im proud to say thank you france for fighting beside us to defeat the german's in WW1 and WW2. THANK YOU !

  • Isnt't this movie about verdun? not the somme. At least i think so

  • Wow! Their tactics are absolutely ineffective, they have absolutely no regret with such huge losses of soldiers.

  • because the generals siad on the second day of the somme, "we've lost 60,000 men, but we will send 60,000 more

  • @Blitz4000 there wasn't a lot to do. they coudn't just stay in their trenches for twenty years. and it wasn't confortable in here. they died because of the bombing. we had to take our country back

  • @fra2603

Uhm...there is a thing called "intelligence gathering". That is very vital if you want to win a war and lessen the casualties. But if you want to eliminate all of your citizens in a very heroic manner, make your day buddy, there's a bullet for everybody. LOL!

At least someone must have thought them how to crouch when there's are an array of machine guns in front of them or how to use mortars or grenades. LOL!

  • @Blitz4000 well i reapeat that we only did what we could. the germans tried gaz (mother fucking cowards) then flamme throwers (it didn't work cause when we shot the guy with the flame thrower he exploded) and then tanks. also airplanes... at the begining at the war we didn't have all this. it was even worst cause the french generals chose a blue and red uniform for the french so that the germans caud see them well

  • @fra2603

I'm just glad that the Allies won and just be glad that there is a superpower (USA) that is willing to risk their resources & lives of its own citizens just to save another country in need.

  • @Blitz4000 hum maybe in ww2 but not at all in ww1. usa did nothing in ww1. canada and australia were a bigger support. but its normal they hesiated in taking part in a conflict htat didn't concern them. why did they join anyways? they weren't any bad guys. they just joined the winning side

  • @fra2603 WW2 is the continuation of WW1, the agendas are still the same. WW2 is the most important of all because the Germans and its allies became more powerful than ever before. If the USA did not join the allies, the axis would have won the war. You have to remember that the US is the mightiest force that the allies have.

  • @Blitz4000 WHAT?? in ww1, i repeat, the usa did NOTHING. if they hadn't joined the war nothing would have changed. the first army in the world in 1918 war France, followed by united kingdom. should i remember you that we had 300million black men in our colonies, and that all our white men had to do 2 years of military service? don't even compare french soldiers with american soldiers who were all volunteers

  • @fra2603

You can't entirely seperate the two great wars because basically you have the same enemy and WW2 is the most important one to win because the enemy is so much powerful than ever before.

You are such an ungrateful bastard, that's alright, go on and be grateful just to yourselves and blindly believe that your stupid tactics and lack of technological know how made you win the war.

The attack on the Somme really displayed your superiority huh? How many helpless french died there again?

  • @Blitz4000 I am very greatfull for usa for ww2. but i won't admitt something that is not true. we owe usa nothing in ww1. and ww1 is not at all the continuation of ww1 it has nothing to do. and germany wasn't more powerfull. i

  • @Blitz4000 n 1939 france still had the world's best army. don't forget france and germany are neighbours. it took the germans 1 week to get to paris since we didn't reallly want to admitt they wanted war again. we could have stoped them easily but our goverment was in transition... its very complicated. and don't forget france saved usa in independance war

  • @fra2603

1 week, 2days, 1 day, it makes no difference. The Germans beat your french asses to a pulp in the end. How can the two wars be different if you still got the same enemy, with the same agendas? Stop viewing the 2 wars as separate but view it as a single great war instead. Just think if the USA who got the most powerful bomb (Atomic bomb) that time did not join the cause, do you seriously believe that the allies will still win? The war could lasted years more.

  • @Blitz4000 what are you talking about? you're so dumb. american are all the same. i told you after ww1 it was such a massacre that in europe pacifists movement began to start. but a moron called hitler that nobody believed just attacked us again. 20 years later. its like when you fight a guy, you beat the shit out of him, then you turn back in victory, walk away, and he stabs you in the back like a coward.

  • @Blitz4000 of course we got beaten up in ww2, but not because they were stronger, but because they took us by suprise. our army could have crushed the german army in a day. seriously man you're stupid as FUCK. FUCK USA MAN! we saved you in indendance war, without france usa would never have existed and one american out of 20 knows that. you saved us is ww2. THANK YOU, its 50/50. you didn't do anything in ww1. NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP MORRON

  • @fra2603

Look who's talking dumb, you just said before that the french got no advance hardware, no smart tactics, and all the french got are their men and stupid generals. The way I see it, the french are the biggest dumb fucks of all time. The Germans beat you up like a bitch, that is the bottom line and excuses are for faggots. The french really DID NOT made any difference in the War of INDEPENDENCE! What made the difference is the American ingenuity in weaponry and tactics. German's bitch!

  • @Blitz4000 FUCK USA COUNTRY OF FUCKTARDS AND FAT MORRONS

  • @fra2603

The Americans should not have bothered saving the ungrateful french bastards. You are all just bunch of snail eating, ego tripping idiots.

  • @fra2603 oh i agree america can suck my balls

  • @Blitz4000 yaeh well america didn't enter the war until it was nearly over, so, you don't have that much to be proud of

  • @SuperMrBlahBlahBlah

Doesn't matter, Americans still fought, suffered, and won, plus they are the only superpower in the team of Allies with the biggest bomb during war which is the reason why Japan surrendered. USA played a major role in defeating the advance weaponry and tactics of the Axis powers. These negative comments about American war heroes only proves the inferiority of the french. Just a bunch of backstabbing girly men.

  • @Blitz4000

And USA owe them their independance.

  • @Blitz4000 Nothing against the Americans but in WW1, France did most of the work on the Western Front. France supplied the War of Independance, France took on 5 European powers during the revolutionary wars and won. Napoleon controlled almost all of Europe in his time. France was back then the continental European superpower. To call them girls is just foolish. But yes you defeated Japan by yourself, be proud of that :)

  • @Icecold309 erm, i think the russians, chinese and british would have something to say about that! They fought just as much against the japs

  • @Icecold309 "But yes you defeated Japan by yourself, be proud of that"

Yeah, with the help of two A-bombs. Real heroes...

  • @pastrecedes Yeah but I suppose no one knew the after effects of it, radiation etc. And the USA did it only to prevent the loss of more American soldiers. They also most probably did it to show the Russian's that they're "better" in military terms.

  • @pastrecedes a direct assult would have destroyed the entire USMC in numbers even to the reserveists, also you would be looking at the death of MOST of the japenese people. 2 A bombs saved many lives if u look at it from that point of view but still equally horrible.

  • @Icecold309 Yes by yourself dont count milions of Chinese Australians New Zelanders British Flipinos Soviets that fough Japan... -_- Napoleon lost in the end tough. And strange thing Napoleon was from Corsega he wasnt even french ;).

  • @ImperialGuard9001

corsica is part of France. period

  • @Kamfrenchie For now... MUhahaha. I dont know nothing is eternal my friend.

  • @Icecold309 No they didn't. The Brits helped.

  • @Blitz4000 You are true brainwashed francophobic patriot! Well, if you think the USA risks its own resources and lives to save the world, you are ill informed. Anyway, it's better that the first power is a democracy, but the USA protects its own interests, like any other nation, and its interests are not so different from those of the Europeans nations like France (whether you like it or not).

  • @Blitz4000 you have a very naive and childlike view of the world.

  • The truth about this battle is that the british lost 200 000 men, the french 60 000 and germany 180 000. Without the french support, the Somme wouldhave been a clear defeat.

  • no one really won that battle it ended in a stalemate

  • Comment removed

  • wow are you serious the reason y the british lost so many men was because they kept having to send more because the french could never hold it. with the french or with out the somme would have been won. When the british did show up the french moved to 8 line trench almost as far back as possible...

  • On the Somme the French were finally compelled to support the English who were completely smashed and by the germans. Fortunately the French were here to reverse the situation. What the French did in Verdun , the Somme, le Chemin des dames, etc... is just heroïc.

  • @tortue2008 and without British support in 1914, Paris and all of northern France would have been over-run.

I am not taking anything from the french, but we the British gave a million men to a war that like the Americans we could have ignored for a year or two.

  • @N15gooner

British's biggest Commercial and naval rival power was Germany before WW1. Contrary to USA, UK had direct interest to fight the German, you can't reallly compare the two

  • @gorthorki yes but the english like to remember this battle as "THE" ww1 battle. We prefer verdun. it was much more bloodier

  • fuck war, make love

  • not love sex

  • what movie is this from?

  • From "A Very Long Engagement". The original title is "Un long dimanche de fiançailles" by Jean Pierre Jeunet.

  • cooooooooooooooool

  • damn.. charging was like suicide!

those brave men must be really really strong in their mind... and fearless

  • Ever heared of shellshock? Everybody was damn scared...

  • yes bro, of course i've heard bout it, sometimes i call it adrenaline of war, you feel almighty and you don't feel the pain..

  • Actually Brah ShellShock is not like Adrenaline of War at all, ShellShock is The World War I name for what is known today as post-traumatic stress, this is a psychological disorder that develops in some individuals who have had major traumatic experiences... Adrenaline of War is well how you describe it you feel like a hero, nothing can stop you, your body is at its best

  • si compadre, ya me habia dado cuenta de la diferencia, Peace ;)

  • Aye Aye... Todo Bein, Todo Bein. Cuidate Hermano. Later

  • are you retarded? shellshock is a severe mental condition that makes you very scared of loud noises, uniforms etc (anything to do with conflict). adrenaline is completely different.

  • i'm not english native you idiot... i guess is normal to be a little bit confuse about terms

  • why am i the idiot? have you not heard of google?

  • How did the guy at 1:55 survive a direct artillery hit intact, and his face not even dirty or marked?

  • Is this movie like Passchendaele in the sense that If it didn't have a long romance it would be a very well made WW1 movie? Awesome battle scenes but a very long and unending romance going on?

  • What is the Name of this Movie ?? [2]

  • Un long dimanche de fiancailles

  • Tanks

  • I find the name in portuguese already. Tank you for the help!

  • yep but if you talk about canada, there are many many other nations that fought too with the allies. anyway france was special, each man had to do 2 years of military service, bitain had a military service too but shorter i don't know about the others. this explains the high quantity of soldiers

  • what weapon does he carry at 0:46 its not a normal bolt action rifle.

    kind of grenade launcher????

  • im thinking a machine gun, but then i would assume they would keep those at the trenches so i dont know

  • What is the Name of this Movie

  • final somme figures

    germany - 400,00

    britain - 420,000

    france - 195,000

    (roughly)

  • yeah i have to admitt the english gave us a good support...this proves again that the french-english hate is just a gentle rivality. But come on people, USA didn't have anything to do in this war!! They send several thousand soldiers... pff and had a couple thousand death (france had 4 million) and after they say that we are cowards and that they won WW1. The french soldiers were the bravest soldiers in the world!! Soldiers had red and blue clothes and no helmet to show they bravery, true story

  • I couldn't agree more...

The French took an awful lot of punishment in the war...

  • Verdun is a clear example,,,

  • sorry 1.5 million french and 1.2 millionbrits and 2 millionn ruscofs

  • Well yes? But the war on the western front was fought mainly on French soil... That is something the Americans has never tried... And the Americans have never even tried getting their cities bombed in daily raids...

  • the americans have fought on french soil at the end of ww1 and lost 200 thousands men stupidly, i just say us didn't change anything really but we can't forget these soldiers who died..

  • Yes, but we did get our cities bombed by the British during two major wars. So Americans (perhaps not since 1814) have experienced being attacked during wartime.

As for fighitng on French soil, the Americans bailed out the people of Frence during WWII and did the gentlemanly thing by allowing De Gaulle and his troops to take all the credit on their home turf - by being the first ones to march into Paris. De Gaulle certainly benefited from it.

  • It's all relative though. Without the French, the Americans probably would not have been able to defeat the British during the Revolutionary War. So, I don't see it as an antagonistic relationship between the countries. France has benefited America, and America has benefited France.

I wish we had a leader like Sarkozy in the White House, instead of the leftist college professor we have now.

  • Move to France if you don't like smart people in the White House.

  • That's ok, I have no interest in France but i'm sure Chairman Maobama would love America to become a pacifist nation like France... Sarkozy was France's answer to that leftist Chirac.. who will America vote to replace Maobama and his Marxist administration? Only time will tell..

Smart people in the White House. I needed that laugh, thanks for that, hah.

  • You seem to be a very educated man, Chirac leftist?? "Maobama"? Do you actually know what communism is?? And see, France is a "pacifist" country because its land and people has known massive horror.

  • And will you give him the money to move to France sir?

  • I can tell you that Sarkozy isn't popular at all here. He does things like Nepotism, and his first action as a president was to give to himself 140% augmentation.

Plus he's arrogant and apparently is rude with foreign medias.

  • oh yea.. he's shown his true colors shortly after being in power for a few months. Much like the phony politicians we elect in the U.S. In particular, the "Messiah" who's in power now.

  • It seems to me that the politicians are the less qualified person to govern a country :p Their role is only to be elected.

  • tru, usa arrived during the end and took credit. France did very good since they were in borders with germany. You cant forget the canadians tho, they did alot

  • The actress at 1:51... wasn't she in the Da Vinci Code? I think so.

  • one fault in this movie:the german machinegun where shooting abaout 800 shots per minute. Under ww1 the machineguns where shooting abaout 600 shots per min. nut awesome movie

  • its not as bad as what the brits had, 20,000 men got shot meters from the tops of their trenches.

  • what is the name of this movie my french is elementary

  • "Un long dimanche de Fiancaille"

or in english "A very long engagement"

  • Well, it's delightful to see so many experts freely giving their exceptionally valuable opinions.

  • disrespectful, that's the good word.

I have posted this video as a tribute and an exemple of the pain for the family and the soldier, not for a debate. But you are in the right, french would have been quickly overwhelmed if Von Hindenburg and Lundendorff would have been ealier on the west front, and on top of that, french army didn't have enough soldier to face imperial germany. And it is a french who told that :D ;)

  • @darkside30900 oue mais ça c'est parce qu'ils avaient annexés l'autriche

  • Next, without the British guarding the Northern Flank, the French would have been encircled and over-run (If the French also had to guard the Northern Flank, then their lines would have been too stretched).

Next, without the Russians (Who had more soliders then France) starting a second front, France would have been over-run very early on.

So basically, your claims of a Franco-German war are horribly untrue, and pretty disrespectful in many ways.

  • Comment removed

  • this war franco-german, the other nations has way less soldiers... the french nearly won the war by themselves. yes they has allies, but the german had allies too..

  • the austrians were fighting in russia so the germans were allown at the western front.

  • that is totally not true

  • "the french nearly won the war by themselves. yes they has allies "

True, the other nations had less soldiers, but its definitely not true the French nearly won it by themselves. First, they didn't have a navy nearly as big as ours, so couldn't blockade German ports. Second, Britain and the Commonwealth won most of the battles to take Germans colonies while France was concentrating of the Western Front.
