i have the book and the film and have always loved it for me the interesting thing about the story is the way that jack higgins humanizes the germans it is because of the courage of one of the germans that the whole mission goes haywire when he gives his life to save a little girl whos fallen in a watermill.
It's just so brilliantly implausible, so epicly underrated...with Donald Sutherland, Michael Caine and Donald Pleasence! Good god, why haven't I been able to record this from the start!
Terrific. It always fills me with a sneaking admiration for the German paras who used to jump at heights as low as 250 feet. Such brave men in such a rotten cause.
i think the most poignant scene was when the german paratrooper died rescuing the children in the mill. thus revealing their true mission.classic line from col steiner
i thought the polish war ended in 1939 . to the ss colonel 'you remind me of something unpleasant i picked up on my shoe.'
@doublemandala You're welcome. Classic war movies always left a mark on people... they have something that I don't see in nowaday's war movies, I don't know what is it but when a child I saw Where Eagles Dare... And I loved it.
@TheUnforgivenRebel To me it seems that classic war movie heroes behave most of the times knightly . Not like today's war movies where they shoot everyone up without a cause . The German paratrooper for example dies to save a little girl .
@LockAndLoadp Nowadays if you see some modern warfare movie those ones about SEALs or Special Forces, you'll see most of them have no ethic at all (but they are proffesionals, aren't they?) and it seems to be pretty badass. Not to me.
In other words, you don't like modern war movies because they shatter your romantic illusions. Soldiers throughout the whole 20th century have killed civilians rather than other soldiers, ww1 being the exception, even though atrocities against civilians occurred in that war also, as when the Germans executed hundreds of Belgian civilians in 1914. During the 19th century 70-80% of all war casualties in Europe were military, in the 20th century it was 70% civilian.
My point is, classic war movies, with the exceptions of the Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far, were generally very very flattering to the military men of the 20th century, idealizing. Also, some movies, like the Guns of Navarone, were nothing short of predecessors to Rambo; one guy or a group taking on battalions of enemies with no great sweat.
The village location is the mapledurham estate in berkshire, and the alderney isle harbour is charlestown in cornwall.the shops and pub in the village were just front sets,as was one of the watermills.joanna grey's cottage is just outside mapledurham estate.
@TheUnforgivenRebel.Yes,i went to charlestown, about 20 years ago,& remembered it from the film.I went to mapledurham about 14 years ago, seeing its name mentioned on the credits.Theres a cafe there with the films bill poster in it,also newspaper cuttings of the filming in the church's porch. Also, they added the door to church for the film.
@megagalee It's a wonderful film. It has elements that make you remember the movie and it shows the good side of the german soldier too. The plot is nice, using an odd a rebel Irish man to make it thru' the british lines... and the ending, unpredictable.
I read the book and saw the film and I both enjoyed them. But what I like about the film is that it can help you visualize the characters, when you are reading the book. I think Donald Pleasance really looks like Himmler. What I like about the book is the fact that Jack Higgins doesn't potray the Germans as the usual evil people. In reality, they were too humans. The soldiers had to fight and kill just like any other soldiers. I think the best characters are Liam Devlin and Oberst Steiner.
@TheUnforgivenRebel i think that pleasance was too nice as himmler too, i would imagine himmler as cold and calculating, thats not how he came across in the film
@bernardcz92 Yes-Devlin is a wonderful character piece. I also have an uncle in Belfast but he hasn't passed on his bare-knuckle boxing skills to me yet.
From what I remember of the film he ends up in a unit being sent on dangerous missions because he helped a girl escape from a train that was going to the concentration camps.
The story goes that hitler in one of his brain storms orders the abduction of churchill and a feasibility study is conducted, himmeler orders radl to execute the plan as its 'apparently' what hitler wants, he selects steiner (caine) as he a paratrooper, english speaking and has the training experience for such an operations. Steiner is currently on a penal colony conducting sucicide missions for saving the jewish girl, saved only from execution because of his iron cross
@byfleetblue And Donald Pleasance as a German too. Great performance. Films back in the 70s, 80 and 90s are sooo much better than the worthless garbage of today!
Could you post with link that can convert to mp3. I love the end credits march for this film but having trouble locating it again and accidental deletion.

Memorable characters both of them.
But I think Donald Pleasance wasn't ugly enough to play a convincing Himmler.
Pleasance is a model compared to Himmler Hahaha!

@DrSquidley Yeah, for Himmler they should have casted somebody with a more... "mongoloid" appearance so. It would have been even more scary!
TheUnforgivenRebel 1 year ago
Which is why Jack higgins is well-liked in germany....

@bernardcz92 I disagree. The best character was obviously Colonel Pitts ;)

@bernardcz92
I always "cast" the books I read, think what actor suits the character and cast the appropriate ones. Johnny Depp is my most common hero character XD
And the German soldiers of ww2 are not compareable to other Western soldiers in that war, in my opinion.
