Me too ^_^ However from what I've heard while it is the actual dance it's a modified form. If you look it up on Youtube you can find the song in a movie called Dil Se and also in the play Salaam Bombay and there are more steps. I could be wrong, but that's what I've read from other reviews.

Thaiyya Thaiyya looks like a recent Punjabi song, not some "old punjabi song" like you claim.

Also, the singer for Thaiyya Thaiyya is Sukhwinder Singh, the same guy who sang Chaiyya Chaiyya in Dil Se.

Anyway, I found out that the lyrics for Chaiyya Chaiyya date back to an 18th-19th century Sufi poet Bulleh Shah, who also happened to be Punjabi. So yes, the song does have Sufi origins.
