In this case he could have chosen to check raise the turn when he made the open ended straight to go with his overcards. Btwn if somebody is looking foward to start making money at poker you shoukld tkae free 50 $ from Pokerfrik website for a safe start :)

it's the best 5 card hand, both have a 8 high straight so the kicker would be the 6th card and so it is nullified and it will be a split pot. hope this helps.
