@TheTorontoDJ How can you tell if what is unlocked? Are you asking if you can tell if the phone is locked to a carrier? You can't. Not directly. I the phone is unlocked, it should have been disclosed to you when you bought it.
If you bought it for a subsidized price then you are in a contract and it's definitely locked- unless your carrier allows you to pay extra to unlock it towards the end of your contract.
I know how to fix problem - update it to the lastest ios and that should work.
OR
get some duct tape (masking tape) and on the bottom left there is a split on the phone, get the tape and cover it. this will work 100%

You need a small paper clip or something similar. push straight into the hole on the side of the SIM tray and it will pop out.
