I first heard Arthur O'Brien with the Navigators doing this song down at O'Reilly's a few months ago and I fell in love with it! This version is great!

The version I first heard was by Christy Moore. I later found out it was written by Richard Thompson.

but i swear. my friend lent me a cd with this song and a whole other bunch of folk songs. it was called 'hoover the dog' maybe it was a compilation

I love Christy's version as well. This one is a bit faster. I like the mellow quality when it's slowed down.
