It's a shame that Jeff Buckley is so revered while his (far more talented and prolific) dad, Tim, is more of a footnote. Tim released nine albums in his lifetime, btw, as opposed to Jeff's one.
Anyhow, "Non-Alignment Pact" is pretty f'in' amazing, but my fave Pere Ubu tune is "Final Solution."
People annoy me when they come on here and start going on about how crap Radiohead are and how great Tim Buckley is and they just reveal themselves to be blind followers of Piero Scaruffi. While he is probably the best music critic out there, people who blindly follow his word without forming their own opinions are no better than people who listen to bands just because they are commercially successful. If Scaruffi taught me anything, it was to form MY OWN OPINIONS.
@MoralNihilism "If Scaruffi taught me anything, it was to form MY OWN OPINIONS": finally someone gets the point!, i also read to scaruffi, he teachs me how to listen music, and to a lot of artists with interesting music. i have my own opinions: i disagree with a lot of his critics (for example i dont know how albums like "the river" or "safe as milk" could be masterpieces). anyway piero is a good REFERENCE for know about rock music
@fat8622 well at least we can agree they're overrated. i feel toward the beatles as you do toward radiohead actually. i think they were ONE of the best but not THEE best as everyone else seems to believe (excepting you of course). as for floyd i love them quite a bit, although i don't consider them the pinnacle of progressive rock. that would be king crimson
@newfuckingwave you're righ in many ways but i think the beatles was far from being great rock artists (they naver made a masterpiece), pink floyd was NOT a progressive band, they were a psichedelic band, and one of the bests of all times, pink floyd as a progressive act is only a good band. king crimson as a prog band is a lot of better than pink floyd as a progressive band, albums like dark side of the moon and the wall are the most overrated of all music history
@DamonAlbarnFan if you're damon albarn fan, your surprise about that comment is obvious (maybe you also think that oasis and radiohead was two of the greatest bands form 90's) . people that think the beatles was the best rock act, maybe or don't know how to listen music or maybe don't know almost nothing of rock
@progreadicto Oasis only has one good album (Definitely Maybe) and Radiohead 3 good( first 3). I would say the best 90s act goes to Jeff Buckley or Uncle Tupelo.
@progreadicto All three Buckley albums are good. I always forget Wilco has 3 albums in the 90s, so yes they are better. I also can't leave out suede and pulp from my list.
@fat8622 yeah, you're right, but dont compare beatles and radiohead with pink floyd, pink floyd is in another level. a sacuerful of secrets and piper at the gates of dawn are rock masterpieces, but maybe modern dance is a better masterpiece.
I don't get why people say this is weird, I played it to my friend a couple of weeks ago and he understood it, and he's not exactly 'alternative' in his musical tastes, his favourite artist is Michael Jackson.
Listen to Captain Beefheart if you want to know what weird truly is.
Try to put yourself in 1977. Saturday Night Fever blares from every Firebird in the field party. At best - AT BEST - maybe someone had the 1st Elvis Costello or something poppy like hat. This was so far out there in 1977-8 that it would get you beat up just for playing it, listening to it, or wearing a t-shirt.
That's what happens over time. What was insane becomes normal.
Listen to early Talking Heads. Just a catchy pop band, but in 1976 they were cutting edge.
@MoralNihilism 'Weird' is where you find it. Michael Jackson has some bizarre and unique vocal tics, I can understand how David Thomas would sound like a relatively normal singer compared to him
The feedback at the beginning actually has a melody in it. It sounds like a computer modem, humming along to the song. I would not have been surprised, at all, if one of the guys worked around early early gen 1200 baud modems and knew what that sound was.
Attended a Pere Ubu show at the Crystal Ballroom with my wife on her birthday in March of 2006 or something like that. At the end of the set David Thomas asked for requests from the audience and my wife requested this song. David said that they hadnt done this one in at least ten years.........but they did it and THEY NAILED IT and the place went absolutely nuts. Fucking greatest band ever from Ohio. That includes the Ohio Players.
@chh5555 The synth player was working for a few moments to get the right sound for the opening of the song...(if you listen to the record there is this sort of buzzing repeating noise thing right at the top) and David Thomas looked over at him and said...."It's in there." (meaning the tone he was looking for on his synth) and he got it perfectly! It was one of those really cool moments in music. After the set David Thomas sat down opening a box of their CD ST. ARKANSAS and sold them to fans.
I hear you FungusMossGnosis... loving this one separates the actual human beings from the evil Alien Lizard world rulers. And I've loved it long and well. I believe your true story. I've seen all the George Winston people hit the exit doors at Tower.
Love the song. Most accessible of all of them in my opinion. Takes me back to when I was 14 and alone and angry and alone.... Whatever - thanks for uploading it, it's a great tune.
It isn't that far out a ♪♪♪, is it? I was being somewhat facetious. Truth is, there were many reasons for my alienation from my sister, and not talking to her again - it happens that this is a crucial part of that decision that coincided with the other valid reasons. She really does think I'm insane for liking things that "no one else likes". Her idea of the greatest band ever is The Killers. I barely know her.
'Codex' is a magnificent song, but it would hardly be "appropriate"!..like I said in other posts here, there are many legitimate reasons we don't talk anymore, a few reasons I won't go into on a public forum.
My comment 3 months ago was flip and only tells 2% of the story. There are 98 more teardrops to shed in this glass of pity-please. I seriously didn't expect anyone to 'thumb up' my comment. I guess sibling alienation isn't uncommon. Even in adults.
