@AndyCarnage no they do not hurt any more then any other weapon we use. In fact they hurt less. there is no deep tissue bruising like with a sword. just a bit of surface sting. They are not hard rubber they are hollow soft rubber,

@LordRichardLeviathan yes, those are galvanized rubber dog toys. they will suck to be hit with, but i'm sure not as quite as much as straight rattan.

Perhaps, braiding the rope and cutting the vinyl hose into 3 small sections rather than one large one. Thus making it more chain like, however you would still need to rap them with the blue foam. What do you think Richard?

Filmed with Master Pat the other day. Trying to edit materials but computer keeps crashing. Should have misconceptions up in the next day or two. Will follow with some fighting with flail videos as well.

Nice thing about head failures with these flails is they have very little mass and are hollow rubber. they don't go far and they do not hurt when they hit you. Much safer then say a solid rubber ax head. Only failures I have had have been with flimsy buttons. All flails with sturdy buttons leather or plastic have been fine. Make buttton out of !/4 to !/2 inch plastic the size of 50 cent piece.

For those not familiar with experimental weapons. Make one using the guidelines. Take it to an official practice and ask people to fight you. They have the right to refuse. Always let them have the option to hit you first and use the weapon. Then they may be willing to let you use it on them.  It can not be used in tourney's or at events in melees but you can bring it to events and show it around and let people fight pickups with it or organize a demonstration for people. Happy Flailing

Note on the plastic button. you need to make sure it is made of thick bottom of the barrel type of plastic about 1/4-1/2 inch thick and more the size of a 1/2 dollar than a quarter. This should prevent any head failure. The only head failures I have had have been the result of too flimsy a button. All the flails made with robust buttons either leather or plastic seem to be ok.

To those who are wondering in other kingdoms about the status of the flail on a society level. Except for the two kingdoms experimenting with them they are still not allowed. Use these guidelines if you like and talk to your Earl Marshall about opening an experiment. As of Pennisc 2009 the Society Earl Marshall gave us another 6 months of experimentation and supported the idea of making this video. Hopefully this week we will get a fight video out by East Kingdom Earl Marshall Master Padraig
