Proof you can make avant garde ideas work in a mainstream setting with humour and gravitas without a hintof elitism or snobbery. What always strikes me first about Anderson is her warmth, she's about inclusion and sharing of ideas.
@larawilder my god you put that so well. i've been listening to her for years and have seen her in concert twice, and what you said is exactly right. but i couldn't have said it in a way that hit the nail on the head like you did. the warmth and inclusion of her audience while stimulating the mind at the same time. true artistry in that
Larawilder, how plantfish has reacted is as I have reacted. When I read your commentary on Laurie I had to stop whatever I was doing to commend you. Your descriptors warmth and inclusion are indeed prominent characteristics of Laure that haven't been pointed out to us until you revealed them to us.
I was going to write a whole load of stuff about the commercial trap and how artists forget what they are about, but then sometimes remember, like Laurie. But I can't be arsed. Laurie is, without question, one of the best artists of our time. I am proud to own several Lauries, and Damien can take a run and jump. The '80s happened but it was nobody's fault.
What a show ! My brother 's seen this live in Paris and i envy his luck ! I have this VHS though, which is expensive and rather difficult to find... but the sound quality of it compared to the audio cd or the vinyl record leaves more than just a bit to be desired. Anyway, a few years later i saw her live in Athens on a solo performance but it was still a fine show ! And guess what ! I 'm gonna see her again in Athens TONIGHT ! I got to get ready to go...the theatre is 35klm away !
Say what you want about the studio version, but I love its lyrics.
"Well, I dreamed there was an island that rose up from the sea. And everybody on the island was somebody from TV. And there was a beautiful view, but nobody could see. 'Cause everybody on the island was saying: Look at me! Look at me! Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!"
There you have reality TV being predicted in 1986. Brilliant.
While her studio recordings are never half of what her live shows are, the album version of this song (from the otherwise "live" album Home Of The Brave) is HORRID! Nile Rodgers needs to be smacked across the face with 100 fish for that. Preferably sea bass.
@mrreptilebrain not sure about the States, but this is from Home of The Brave, which you may find googleing the name + download. There are thousands of torrents!
I remember when this was the number one song on the charts, and now we have had a continual shit of boy bands and justin bieber is the latest, what the hell happened to music actually making a difference! Thanx for putting this on, it caused me to recall when music meant something.
Hadn't seen again that movie since its release that year.
I was so shocked at watching it that i could say no word during all the show.
Obviously, it is an intelligent and complex art masterpiece, so it was no commercial at all. There is no way to find a copy of the feature movie in the market, anyplace in the world.
Thanks youtube I can recover this pieces of my memory.
I got into Laurie Anderson because I was a huge Belew fan - unfortunately found out about her just a tad late and missed her Strange Angels tour by a day, but then I found a copy of Home of the Brave on VHS and was in heaven. I have lost track of how many times I have seen her in concert since then. Every time I have seen her perform she is sharper, more intense, always fascinating.
You know? I don't believe there's such a thing as YouTube... I mean, they just keep showing you the same pictures, over & over & over. And when they talk, they just make sounds that more-or-less sync up with their lips...
You're probably thinking of the album Laurie Anderson recorded with William S Burroughs and John Giorono called, "You're The Guy I Want To Share My Money With." There's also a track on Mister Heartbreak called, "Sharkey's Night" which features Burrough's vocals.
i've seen her Berlin a performance in 1984 and i was very very impressed. by accident i was seated next to her on a flight to london the next day. very cool lady ( or maybe just hung over)
