i've been a dylan fan for a long time. years ago, I was at a musical festival and there was a hendrix exhibit. It contained a letter by Dylan where he talks of how even though he wrote "All Along the Watchtower' that it was truly Hendrix's song based on how Jimi connected with it. I think this cover is much the same way. There just seems to be something extra in how Jack delivers the lyrics. They seem to mean more to him than they ever do to Dylan. It's simply more dramatic. Great song

The original has an annoying electric guitar, an annoying violin and no organ. Dylan sounds funny in parts, twists his voice like an Arabic singer (kinda interesting). But it turns out to be a duet with Emmylou Harris (boring!) and the violin gets more and more irritating. I'd say The White Stripes version is a definite improvement (and in a way sounds more like Dylan than Dylan). :-)
