Military mining ship finds an alien Marker. Ship gets infested with aliens. Lots of blood. Ship goes boom. Engineer goes to repair it. Engineer gets trapped. Engineer shoots things. More blood. Not really. If its standard protocol to check something like that out, imagine how expensive it would be to send out recon planes each and every time. Also, a look from above likely wouldn't be a good enough of one considering all the uneven terrain and view blocking rocks. Besides, they have no reason to believe that there is any danger at this point, so sending an expensive plane is actually what would be stupid.
