@alinbjj Not much, at least not from Jacare's perspective. There is an interview where he complains about not getting much from BJJ in terms of financial benefits. He had won this tournament and didn't have enough money to go board a plane to go back to his home town. I don't really know how true that is but that is what he said. That is one of the reasons he got into MMA. The Gracies of course don't need MMA per se. They can make money just off their names in BJJ.
BJJ is really a dominant martial art. thats without the striking so how much more if the fighter adds striking in his skills? then its MMA. you have to respect BJJ
Look at UFC, are there any straight up PURE JuiJitsu guys who have been champ lately aside from BJ Penn who's more of a boxer these days? Look at the past/current champs
HW - Lesnar, Velasquez
LHW - Shogun/Machida/Evans
MW - Franklin, Silva
WW - Hughes, Serra, GSP
LW - Penn, Edgar
I see guys in there with black belts in JuiJitsu but only Serra and Penn would be considered guys who started off as a pure JuiJitsu, but they aren't anymore, they're trained in all aspects now and there's a reason
OMG THEY DO!? Yea, you missed Shogun and Rashad Evans too. And VeIasquez has brown, Edgar has purple, Franklin has brown. Thanks for letting me know.

Point is gotta train in more then one. Just BJJ aint gon get u champ.
I agree with Jacare, why should he go back into his guard at 0:50? This is a very bad rule in BJJ. Pulling guard sucks as a rule now this... horrible! Jacare could have slammed Gracie onto his back in the beginning of the match when Gracie pulled guard (in MMA or street fight), so because of this they should have stood them up. IMO
@MrCreepy92 yeah, a bad rule. I understand the slamming part but if you picked your opponent off the back, they should restart the match from standing (just like they do in Judo and Sambo) because in a real life fight OR MMA, a person being lifted off his back will be slammed. So they should NOT slam but at least make it more street realistic and stand both of them up.
there no doubting that on the ground with a gi on BJJ is very very good but stood up trying to throw theres a great deal of crouching which then puts you open to knees etc so a good mma fighter would exploit this particularly if he was wearing just a tee shirt . as for self defense then one on one rarely happens in the UK as most fights breal out in the bars / pubs and the last thing you would want to do is go to ground when surrouded by 20 males fighting . road rage being the exception 1 on 1
The more BJJ tournaments I watch the more I appreciate what Jacare was able to do. Even not liking his style very much have to say that he his probably the best ever. Fill free to disagree.
@macaubjj he does not like to go into peoples guard, that is a good strategy and a style. This style is very similar to Judo and Sambo. I think Jacare's style of BJJ and Judo (he is a black belt in both) and avoiding guards is more self-defense realistic than other BJJ guys who are more Sport BJJ based. Jacare utilizes his Judo to throw people around (watch his other fights) and he avoids guard, he like to go for quick submissions ... I actually like his style.
roger should have won this fight because jacare broke his arm...and when there is an injury like that, the referee has to stop the fight. it is the same as submitting.
because roger laid down, to continue the fight with jaca in his guard..the crowd didn't like it because roger pulled guard when the fight was already out of bounds.
a guarda 50/50 q na revista gracie, os mais antigos criticando q serve p amarrar a luta... então roger merecia a derrota, pois ficou nesta posicao por mais de 3 minutos. amarrando jacaré.
just cus you learn a certain fighting style doesn't determine your victory, just cus your really strong doesn't determine your victory either, it's the same with any physical attribute. A true fighter can adapt to every opponent, every situation, every environment..."when water goes in the cup, it becomes the cup. Be like water". Bruce lee
You're right, although what would happen if Bruce Lee got taken down or was put in a triangle choke or rear naked choke? His style never really trained against ground fighters. If you bring Bruce Lee versus Relson Gracie, you should know that Relson has the greater chance of winning.
that's what everyone thinks, but if you read bruce lee's work then you'd know that he specialised in four forms of combat...Punches, Kicks, Grappling, and Trapping!...Bruce lee is the greatest fighter alive...and personally i think Rickson Gracie would stand a better chance

Also in the beginning of MMA the reason JuiJitsu was so successful and conquered all was because no one really knew much about it so no one had training for it. That's how Royce destroyed all the bigger, stronger wrestlers and strikers. Nowadays you can't just be trained in only JuiJitsu and win a MMA match because strikers train to counter JuiJitsu moves, just like JuiJitsu guys train to counter strikers nowadays. To defend yourself against those that would harm you... 1 on 1 it's great but what about in a street fight where 3 men try to jump you? Are you going to flying armbar them all one by one? Put one in a triangle choke? No, you can't, his friends will stomp your head while you try. Don't get me wrong, I'm on this video because I love JuiJitsu. But lets not brag.
@spleenbuster I'm a big fan of BJJ, but it hasn't done great in MMA in the last 5 years. For example, BJJ black belt Frank Mir loses to wrestler Brock Lesnar. BJJ black belt BJ Penn loses to wrestler Frankie Edgar. BJJ legend Antonio Noguiera loses to wrestlers Phil Davis and Ryan Bader. Palhares loses to Marquardt, Maia to Silva etc. As far as I can tell, none of the top 3 guys in any UFC division has a BJJ base. BJJ is weak from the bottom when faced with elbows and slams.
@aridavidpaul you can't be serious. GSP - BB. Silva - BB, Aldo - BB, Shields BB, and every single fighter in MMA trains jiu jitsu. this isn't even a discussion that can be taken serious.
@spleenbuster It's MMA, everyone trains everything...The point is that guys who emphasize BJJ are losing to guys who don't. GSP was Karate then wrestling. Aldo has a Muay Thai base and won with a submission once out of 18 wins (and lost to a submission once). With Shields you're half right - he had a wrestling base but added BJJ early. Anderson Silva has a muay thai base. He's won by submission twice out of 28 wins (and lost to submission the same number of times).
@aridavidpaul i guess BB dont train seriously. i will note that. and when silva's feet were to the fire by a wrestler, jiu jitsu is what came through. i am not doggedly sticking up for jj here, i just feel you are very off base.
@aridavidpaul all of those fighters are you telling us about are training in bjj, come on, dont be an ignorant, what is the best style to defend yourself on the ground? the answer is bjj.Even if lesnar is wrestling base, did you think he is not training in bjj? of course he has.
@alinbjj Everyone trains in everything. The point is it seems you're better off spending your life wrestling and doing a little BJJ and boxing on the side if you want to succeed in MMA. In a fight between a superstar wrestler with blue belt BJJ and a worldclass BJJ guy with a couple hundred hours of wrestling, the superstar wrestler wins.
@aridavidpaul And where did you pull that declarative statement from exactly? There are plenty of examples of great wrestlers with JJ knowledge falling to elite BJJ fighters. The most recent example is Trever Prangley losing (badly) to Roger Gracie. Prangley has superb wrestling ability and a lot of MMA experience and Roger made him look like a complete amateur. Old school BJJ on full display. Fighters with the highest level of JJ skill are always dangerous for ANY opponent.
@elguapoalso Okay, so you counter my 5 examples from top level MMA competition with 1 example of your own from mid-tier competition. @aridavidpaul I used the Prangely fight not for the outcome but more for the manor in which he lost. I think it's easy to poke holes in the premise of your argument actually. Maybe not so easy to to it within the 500 word constraint of youtube though. It's just a baseless supposition that you've provided. Picking certain outcomes in the UFC is a weak foundation. And fact that you consider Mir to be among the best BJJ fighters in MMA only further proves you don't know much about grappling
Jacare was playing with fire the way he was positioning himself in Roger's guard. He was in a difficult situation with a guy with such long legs. Put yourself in Jacare's place, what would you do in Roger's guard?
