Nice burnout, and a 383 is a solid engine! But the GM 454 HO is a monster. I could not kill it, tached it out every light, over rev every gear and drove 80 mph for 8 hours straight at 4000 rpm, to get to a car show in Florida! For 4 years straight, I did all this and when I decided to build it up, when we took it apart it still looked like it has never been run! GM V8 engines are built to perfection and the LS series look great too.
@DRK4x4 Seriously! I got pictures of the tear down and the engine inside looked like it was brand new! I tore down a perfect running engine to build HP. The 454 HO was a beast, and now its a 700 HP beast, but I can't run it hard like I use too. Cam way to big!!!

@BIHxJDMxSUPRA the fact that your online i.d has 'supra' in it just explains why an idiot like you would think that. the smallblock chevy is THE best building platform in engine history. do it right, they are bullet proof.
@BIHxJDMxSUPRA it is not false. it is the best engine to make the most horsepower with the least money and have it be reliable. all that means is your friend doesnt know how to build an engine. my 72 chevelle has the same 383 with Dart 2 ported heads, 10:1 compression engine in it for 6 years now, driven weekly. never an issue. solid flat tapet cam is the only the requiring adjustment for rocker clearance, and thats cuz i wanted a flat tapet cam.
@trent345678 4.10 gears makes its slower in top end. 3.73 gears are much better in my eyes than 4.10 because when you drag race you can launch from a higher rpm and still hook up. Not smoke the tires.
longer stroke the pistons move basicually back in the day they would put a 400sbc crank in and bore the main journals out but now they have the cranks that you can put right in you can get piston crank rings rods damper and flex plate for 800$ all day. cheap way to make a 500HP motor
so basicually the stroke changes more up and down of the piston has to travel
@Kleo84 it actually gives more torque, since it has a greater arm on the crankshaft. its also harder to rev a longer stroked engine.. therefor harder to make higher hp
I've guess I've just gotten too old and therefore irrelevant but i just don't see the point in doing burnouts unless it's on a track. Get'em clean and hot and then run it down the quarter. A fast E.T. that's what's really cool. Not some torker motor doing a burn out. Big deal.
to each his own. i'm not big on abusing a car on the street either but i'm not a snobby cranky old man that worries about shaving .001 seconds off a quarter mile either.
The Chevy 383 Stroker is an 8 cylinder engine that uses the popular production Chevrolet 350 block and a slightly altered Chevrolet 400 crank. A stock 350 has a piston stroke length of 3.48 inches. The 400 crank changes the 383 to a total stroke of 3.75 inches. This produces a total displacement of 383 cubic inches (thus the name 383).
307 which is close to 305 will run circles around it if built right. problem is 307s were 2 barrel engines and the blocks dont have enough nickel and they wear out faster. i have a 383 in my 71 velle. built from a late 327 block, scat 400 crank, 350 rods, speed pro pistons and alum rpm heads. about 450hp. chevy 302 was a hot engine to run w/ manual trans.
That's called a de-stroked motor and that was a popular way of generating high rpm power. In the 70's (before I was born) my dad ran pro-stock with a guy in a '63 vette. they de-stroked a 327 to a 290 something. They did some crazy stuff to it. The auto-meter tach would bottom out at 15,000 rpm and keep going. The idea was to use high RPMs through a powerglide then to a super low rear-end. Like 8.20 ratio. You make one shift at the 1/8th and then you have the revs to take it to through 1/4.
The 400 crank can fit in the 350 block it just doesnt have as much piston clearance to the heads, And then you bore it 30 over, Thats why its called a stroker, The best thing is it dont weight as much as a big block but you can get just as much hores and torque.
@Slick189 haha i agree wit you but if you really know what you are doin with a small block you can make it turn alot more rpms to wich goes right slong wit what you said
a bore+hone of .030 on a 350 engine produces 355 cubic inches. most 350s can only safely go .060 over. where are you getting the extra cubes? i'll give you a hint: stroke. the 350's stroke is 3.48 inches. to make a 383 you put a 3.75 stroke crank in.
you guys forget about the 427? would murder a 383 and rev to the moon long live the rat but I love my small block mouse 327 anyway a 305 done right can beat a stock 350 its whats done to it
its dumb to compare motors to other motors when there is alot of factors to consider such as compression ratios cam selection rear gears transmission stall converters etc
yea.. some 305s will really rip.. my dad had one built up in his truck and took it out and did the same upgrades to a 327 and put in and the 327 wasnt nothin compared to the 305
With a 327 you have to run a huge carb and an intake with an open plenum and short runners, you also have to run 1 1/4 inch headers with a 3 inch exhaust, if it cat breath you can't make a 327 run worth a damn.
305s run better with an intake that has a split plenum and long runners. They are meant for bottom end torque.
305 was a piece of shit design. Polish a turd, still a turd. The 283, 327, and 350 smack em around when built the same. And no a 427 would not rev to the moon without some serious work. Thats what the 327 and 283 were known for was winding out, not a stock bigblock.
ino that most 305s are shit.. i wish gm had never made them.. but his ripped.. he had it in a fucking 67' full size long bed.. 4x4 truck and it would run mid 17s on the 1/4 mile all nday.. now you know somthing ahs to be workign too get all that weight down there that quick
It's not that difficult, 400 crankshaft, .030 over bore in a 350 block = 383 cubic inches. Get the compression around 11:1. From there get a decent cam grind and a nice set of heads (I like AFR) and you are well over the 400 HP mark.
sounds like you need some 4.11 gears or 3.73s your car is geared to high the engine cant have enough power to keep the car in tune at the rear wheels im just saying if you put a powerglide geared up to 3.73s or 4.11s you would have yourself a one hell of a ride there that kick some ass or at least a 4 speed wide ratio muncie with 4.11s ;)
Thats true, but what If you were to do the same power upgrades on the 383?''
The 383 would most likely take the 1/8th, but the 1/4 will belong to the big block. Ever watch street's on NHRA? BB's usually take it when built / geared right.
no offense, but why a 383 when the origonal engine in that was probly a 454, i mean a 383 in a chevelle just dont sound right...and to me id upsize not downsize
Honestly, I do agree with you, but what if it wasn't a 454? There's a chance that he could have gotten it from some dumbass that put a v6 in it. You never know.
hey if u have a 454 on a chevelle and u race a nova with a 383 the nova most likely will beat it for the fact that is really light so if u put the 383 u will have a better run against the nova just saying and a small block well tune does kick any 454 i should know cause my 39 chevy coupe has a 454 and my nova has a 383 and i think the 383 is way better
True true,383 are better. Big blocks run at a much lower RPM also making them more torque and towing power, they still can pack a big puch when in the right car but you can't beat a good old small block mod.
um do you notice the price diffrence? the 572 cost like a full 10g's more than the 383 lol. 383 strokers are so popular because you get bigblock power for half the price.
