  • thank you so much man, much appreciated video

  • what if you will be using varied file types in your project

  • @Andy000K Set your project properties to match your final render settings. For example, if rendering to YouTube, set the project properties to 720p.

  • @guerillabill Much thanks for your reply, I am restricted by my computer and most likely wil have to edit and render sd, i will check your other uploads also. all best

  • hey but when we have very tipes of videos, maybe one in 720 and other in a diferent way?

  • @ScapersMedia Choose a project property that will closely match your render preferences. In most cases for HD widescreen, that will be 720p

  • How do i make it so everytime i drop a clip into vegas, i can cut the sound out without pressing "u"?

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!! <3

  • oh my god thank you

    you lovely person you

  • oh wow, my past 4 hours of insanity whilst trying to find the proper settings could have all been avoided if i hadnt assumed that little folder icon just meant 'browse' =p thanks for this video

  • hey, does everyone have their own techniche on editing, caus alot of peoples timelines look distinct :D

  • @javieralza Many editors move the timeline to the top, and the preview window to the bottom. This makes it easier to edit - at least for me.

To change, choose 'options', 'preferences', 'display', and uncheck 'timeline at bottom'.

  • @guerillabill oh lol'z, i was talking about how you work your timelinne, i like mines at the top, startd in movie maker, moved to vegas its the same principle, but so much more posibilities, alot of presets, and there customizable to !!!

  • Thanks for the tip

  • Hi Bill. If I were working with both HDV and DV footage in the same project, would it be better to match the media settings to the DV footage so that the editing process flows a little nicer (such as smoother previews).... Because I can always render it in an HDV format and burn it to a Blu-ray disc right? I've been using Movie Studio for about a month now, and it seems much easier to work with SD footage than HD.

  • @neckbreakerb When I work with hdv and dv, I set the project properties to 720p. Then when I render, I chose the 720p template.

  • @guerillabill Hi Bill, What would settings or template would you advise if you use for editing videos clips HD 1920 x 1080p and HDV ? Thanks.

  • @ghostcircle Unless you have a very fast computer, lots of RAM and aren't using mov / mp4 files, you won't want to set the project properties to 1920 X 1080p.

In most cases, 720p produces best results.

  • Hi Bill! Will this technique prevent choppy previews and allow for "full resolution preview?" I'm new to Vegas. I've worked with Pinnacle Studio, which uses background rendering as you go. So previews are smoothe, and look pretty much how they'll look when you've exported your project. Can that be achieved with Sony Vegas? Thanks!

  • @neckbreakerb Setting project properties helps to get smooth previews. But if editing mov, mp4, divx or xvid video files, you won't get smooth previews due to the nature of those files.

With true avi files, you'll always get smooth previews

  • @guerillabill Thanks for the quick response Bill. Does this mean that if I'm editing HDV video, I'll never have smooth previews?

  • @neckbreakerb If you are editing mp3 or mov videos, you'll never have smooth previews. If editing true avi, previews are always smooth.

  • holy shit this is the best answer i got for preventing lag of play back. I came to conclusions like not to open too many programs, messing with the priority with task manager or even buying a newer computer... this though helped alot and is most effective. thanks for sharing

  • so the project propterties only affects the preview, and not the accual render, right?

  • @wintereater The project properties affect the preview, editing speed, and partially affect the render.

But render properties override project properties.

  • Hey Bill,

Very helpful vids. I'm an advanced user with PS4 but don't know the first thing about these video editing software. I have Vegas 10 Platinum installed and just want to know if I can easily make a movie really quick with this software? I'm thinking automated, like Vaio Movie Story? I want to make a movie in 5 minutes, not 5 hours. :)

    Thanks!

  • @matwil74 Sony Movie Studio is a powerful, yet easy to use video editing program, but it won't automatically create videos for you like animoto or muvee reveal.

  • hi bill,

im wondering if you ever had the 0x0000005 access violation error within vegas.

im currently trying to render a movie in wmv format and it keeps crashing with this error code. its annoying, because ive always used the same template , the same camera , the same settings and the same computer. this has only happened recently ( 2 weeks ago till now ) and im looking for your 2 cents. thanks,

    dave.

  • @TheLumberjackass Try rendering a different video file to wmv. If that works, it means the error is caused by something in the source video.

  • ty!!! ty so much!

  • Hi Bill, I saw many of your videos, and I cant resolve my problem yet. In the final step of render, the option Windows media audio V9 (wma) its like lock, dont let me go to costume and dont let me save the proyect either. (theres no template aviable for this proyect) I dont kwon how to create a new template from zero to wma (youtube for example) last time i have no choise to render as AVI, its was a 4 min. video nd the size was more than 600 mb. please I need help i complitly lost. thanks

  • My YouTube video, 'YouTube settings for Sony Vegas Movie Studio' shows how to change render settings and save render templates

  • Thanks Bill ,

Now I have a better understanding of

    the project template.

I tried using the "match media settings" just a little while ago for the 1st time and was surprised that it set up the settings to

    HD 1080-60i (1920x1080, 29.970 fps)

even though I had the camera (canon hf s11) set to either 24 or 30p, I can't remember which. I would never have guessed that 60i, 29 fps would be the correct project settings.

  • tHANK YOU

  • hey can u help me?

when i try to import a movie it apper just the audio?

    thx

  • If the video doesn't appear when you import a movie, it almost always means the video is in divx or xvid codec, and codec required to edit that video is not installed on your computer.

This is very common with videos from cell phones, flip cameras, video games.

  • thanks very much

  • i got a problem ... when i render my video ( only 50 secs ) it take ages to render it ... i taken HD template and .wmv format ... you maybe can help ??? bcause i made long ago 2 vids larger than that ... with same format and template ... and they didn't taken that long ...

  • Render speed will vary depending on computer speed, ram, available disk space and source video codec.

If source video is compressed with divx or xvid, it can take hours to render to hd or avi or wmv because so much data has to be reconstructed.

typical with video from cell phone, flip camera, digital still camera, video games

  • I have a quick question about my video resolution. Whenever I make the actual video and play it with Windows Media Player, the video seems VERY small and is just a little box with a black border all around it. I played other videos and this problem does not occur, so what exactly happened to my video resolution?

  • Use 'render as' to create the video. The render settings you choose, affect the size and quality of the final video.

  • thanks very much bill

  • great TIP thanks alot :D

  • Hey bill. I need help. Every time I try to render a video on Vegas to AVI format and on a Default Template (uncompressed) it end up being a video that doesn't sycronize with the audio right and it took up more than 70.0 GigaBites of my D):Drive. It is almost 11 minutes of Length and I tried this twice. For some reason it doesn't work properly. Please tell me how to solve this problem. I want to make it an AVI video. If it's the template, tell me how to fix it. And so it doesn't take up 70.0GBs.

  • The uncompressed .avi template will create huge files, usually much larger than the source video. A better avi template is the NTSC DV template.

The reason the audio and video don't sync up is your computer playback of a 70 gig file.

The audio and video are synced, but your computer has trouble opening and playing a 70gig file in real time. Hence the audio appears out of sync.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Thanks a WHOLE lot, Bill. This helped loads!

  • Do you have to do that for every clip or can you just do it for the whole video?

  • Just do it for the one clip which matches most of the video dimensions for the project.

  • I've done what you've told, but on the preview video below it says project 320x240 and preview 320x240 while saving. Is that normal?

  • If you have set your project to 320X240, that's what it will report under the preview window.

If your source video is not 320X240, you may want to change your project properties to match the source video.

I show how to do that in my YouTube videos.

  • Oh wow!! So it made a wide screen fit the whole screen? If so that's great!! I could have used this on an older project I did that had a mix of full and widescreen.

  • As a professional video editor, what kind of computer do you have, and what are its stats? I have just a run-of-the-mill computer and it takes hours and hours to render things. I understand that render time is always an issue, and that it never takes ten seconds to render an hour-long movie...still though, do you use a professional computer with a great processor or just an average computer that you let run overnight? Or a third option?

  • Until recently, I've been using a core duo 2.4 ghz CPU, 4 gig of Ram, Windows XP, 256meg Nvidia video card.

For SD videos, the render speed is about 1:1 - one minute of render time for each minute of video.

For HD videos, the render time jumps to 8:1.

If you are only working in SD video, a middle of the road computer with at least 100 Gig free disk space and 4 Gig of Ram will render video quickly with Vegas.

  • Thanks very much =)

  • Nice. I've used Vegas for a long time and never knew that.

  • Thanks this helped me a lot. All your videos are helpful.

    Thanks Bill,

    Dennis

  • how come in your last vid you used movie studio and the time before that you used vegas and now your back to vegas again

  • I've got both Vegas and Movie Studio, and do these tutorials with whichever one I happen to be using at the time.

Most of things I show work in either Vegas or Movie Studio. The programs are almost identical.

  • Very helpful video. Thanks Bill :)

  • This will come in handy when making videos. Sometimes when my timelines are piled up with edits and clips, the preview display is always so choppy. Hopefully this will help me. Thanks alot!
