Another thing, I could never figure out what the intake ontop of the engine cover was for. The engine is already getting air from the turbo intakes on the sides. Is the top intake for cooling the engine/transmission down? Is it air conditioning?
@dakillabee With pure sound I ALWAYS mean that you can hear the car without any fucking disturbs like other cars racing on the track, tv commentators etc..
In my opinion this car sounds really good to be a diesel and obviously it can't be compared with a racing car with a normally aspirated engine, even less a Wankel one.
@19Bozzy92 Agreed! One of the great things about sports car racing is the variety of looks and sounds of the cars. The diesels just add a new dimension to that.
Peugeot has announced that they have terminated their involvement in the endurance world championship with immediate effect. The team reportedly was already overseas testing for the 2012 race at Sebring as the news from their own board of members caught them by surprise. What a pity. At Le Mans 2012, the Audi cars will be racing - themselves.
Maybe Peugeot has to leave Audi at Le Mans and go back to INDIANAPOLIS. With their diesel tools. In 1913 and 1917 or so Peugeot won Indianapolis. People died there also. The Americans would be so surprised with their methanol fueled bombs. To see french mazoutwasps after their tale. And in Germany Doctor Professor Wolf-gang Ullrich gonna have a heart situation.
Maybe it would be also a good idea to put again ESSO in/on your cars. All those oil companies are let us say strange. But TOTAL/SARCOZY/KADHAFI was once a team. They almost made love. Then Sarkozy started to shoot like a Judas. Le pauvre con. 200ml Twin Stroke oil in 50 liter diesel makes 0,7 liter less Sarcozy in 100 km. Obama looks at the myth busters. I look at my 205.
If you saw what happened at Le Mans : because Audi made just in time real automobiles out of their go-carts none of them died. They just won the race. On seconds. This ennoyes me Peugeot. They rebuild your racecars and you try to build your cars like Audi's. You left PININFARINA. In shit. I hope they still want you.
I have very good and unpredictable results with a little solar panel on my old 205. Since the thing is there my oil pressure meter works normal again. Before it was 'dancing', a well known problem. The almost costless thing feeds the battery with few milliamps. It makes a big difference on my voltmeter also. The car starts by the first compression. Why you simply make not half of your cars out of solar panels? The WEIGHT will be the same.
If I'm not mistaken I think that now Peugeot and Audi have a rivarly going on for Le Mans championships. Funny, long time ago it used to be Ferrari and Porsche. How times change.

Part of the appeal of racecars is the sound. This just sounds like an 18-wheeler. I can't say it gives me goosebumps like, for instance, the Mazda 787B does. "Hey mom, the school bus is here!....oh wait...that's just a Peugeot or Audi LeMans car."
I dont know if you guys know this but if you want to use a diesel enginw, you get a 2.6 litre displacement instead of the petrol displacement of2.0 litres. Also, a diesel gets more torque and the same amount of hp.
I just love the commentaries below! All these people seem to know better about race engines and the benefits of petrol engines than the highly paid top engineers of audi and peugot who keep dominating the 24 hours of le mans with their stupid sounding diesel engines. Maybe next year they´ll get disqualified for the sound and a good sounding petrol engine inherits the victory.

Who cares if it's diesel, it sounds gorgeous. The BMW I drive is a diesel, sounds like a tractor but still goes pretty well, and if all else fails I'll win a race against a petrol version by not having to stop for fuel so much!
@djbadlt My friend says the average is around 4750rpm in R18, my gosh, those DIESEL-s sound a b s o l u t e l y AMAZING, like the old F1 cars from early 70s. I totally fell in love with those high performance diesel engines, and I've never liked any diesel engines before to say at least.
I dont understand y so many ppl hate diesels. They're far more fuel efficient, they're alot more reliable and you can get both torque and horsepower without sacrificing one or the other. Hell I drive a semi I should know a lil something
I honestly love the way this sounds. you can whine all you want but this is a high strung, high reving fuel burner. diesel has a greater potential energy that's why this car does so well.
@SLaYD666 But you are right. Thats what energy gets converted into, whether it be power, or noise, heat and so on. Thats what KERS is, it regains ebnergy from heat which wouldve otherwise gone to waste.
@SpinninTom learn how an engine works then talk. the reason this is so loud is they build it to make crazy boost, listen to the turbo spool and how fast it spools. take the quietest engine you know of, tear the exhaust off it it, throw some downpipes on it with a turbo on the end and it will get a lot louder fast
Thanks for your upload!Sounds fanatastic, heard it for real at 1000km of Spa. This is the sound of future racing: fast, efficient, stealth. The cars the others are wanking about are just all show, but no go.Bloody hell the diesels are fast, with just 3,7liters!
@fredlesson They win because the regulations make diesel, a technology that otherwise would be inferior on a race track, superior. The 24 Hours of Marketing.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What? Pure Sound this fucking crap?? Did you heard a real sound of petrol engine to say it? I'm french and I hate the 908 and the R18. I told you the diesel has nothing to do in the 24Hours of le Mans. Pescarolo and Aston Martin, wake up!
@Sagari90 Yes, sure. I constantly hear awesome petrol engine sounds. I write "pure sound" in the title because you can hear the car without disturbs, like other cars racing or something else.
@LewisTee08 At base nothing except the engine sound. But the diesel dominate the race too long and the petrol engine cannot do something. You know wankel engine (rotary) is forbidden so why not about diesel?
@Sagari90 You know that wankels have been allowed for years? You know that there even have been couple of teams with Mazda's rotary engines in the 2000s? Also, you know that wankels ALONE were never "banned" in the first place?
@Sagari90 its not the type of fuel that was banned.. it was the rotary design diesel and gasoline use pistons, rotaries use rotors wich rotor technology was banned
@Sagari90 gas is well.. a waste of gas and lmao the pescarlos and astons are almost 20 seconds a lap slower than the diesels.. they pit less also and in my opinion sound better
@Sagari90 that doesnt even make any sense..all im saying is diesel or not its still a fast car, plus you cant buy it so whats the point of a car that makes a nice noise in a race? its not going to help you finish 1st..
@Duron13 im not sure what your trying to prove, but a beautiful car that sounds fantastic but finishes last in... LETS SAY, A RACE? is as useful as justin bieber..
@shobin05 Well it seems that you are a stranger to the concept of passion. I won't try to explain to you if you think finish first is better than anything.
@Duron13 concept of passion? haha, waw! go ask any team, ANY team involved in racing...finishing first is everyones gold, if you like finishing last so much is probably why you like to troll so much...btw, you are the one who is bringing up a pointless argument...im done here, goodbye..
Both Audi and Peugeot have added that shark fin that is extending out from the air intake cover and it connects to the car with those "swan-neck" things...
I wonder what purpose they serve... I can see where they'd better direct air flow to the rear wing, but what's the point of the supports...
The noise leaving the headers of the engine is the same no matter what, but you can ONLY reduce the sound by adding a muffler or if your dumb enough to frack around with the fuel/air mixture until your engine barely turns over. Quieter car does not= better performance. the only thing that makes a car quiet is a muffler, which as i said in the previous comment... causes +manifold pressure which = BAD FOR PERFORMANCE.
you are infact wrong, the noise you hear is an unrestricted flow of exhaust leaving the engine, the quieter the engine, the less free flowing the exhaust. which causes positive manifold pressure meaning when the exhaust tries to escape, it will only escape to a certain point and then the exhaust fumes stay inside the piston dramatically reducing the horsepower. Ive heard and seen people that have added 40+ horsepower by adding a freeflow exhaust system to their cars.
@SLaYD666 Yes, in a perfect world a 200HP car would have a much power as a Bugatti Veyron, but the fact is that electric doesn't have as much power to start with, and even if the energy loss rate is 0%, a 200HP electric would be less powerful than a 1500HP perfect world gas with an 80% energy loss rate (yes, it's that high).
@SLaYD666 The diesels have to run large particulate filters (the FAP in the Peugeot) which makes them much quieter. It's nothing to do with efficiency. Also, the order of magnitude of sound energy compared to thermal is FAR lower.
@SLaYD666 That might be one of the dumbest things i've ever heard.. So then I guess battery powered cars should dominate all forms or racing since they produce the least amount of noise
Shame it's a flatplane and not a crossplane engine. Listen to road-car crossplane diesels like the toyota landcruiser V8 TD, audi A8 V8 TD, and ford powerstroke 6.0L V8 TD.. If these cars sounded like they did (with open exhausts mind you) NO-ONE would complain about the noise or lack of it.
Honestly, the sound of a race car isn't high up on my list. The people who whinge about that are just like the people who care more for the livery of a race car than the race car itself. Not being able to "hear" the engine shouldn't automatically make the rest of it rubbish.
This just proves that diesels can be proper race cars. Just listen to that! I can actually hear this Peugeot 908 diesel LMP1 downshifting! You couldn't hear that 4 years ago, let alone hear the exhaust note or the engine! That's exactly what this car is doing! They finally got it right! Bring on Le Mans!!
@deggis4 To be honest, it's a bit reminiscent of the turbocharged petrol V8 LMP1 engines, only with a lower note because of lower revs. Although... if you manage to hear it, you're definitely going to recognize it.
Pity we won't see this awesome vehicle in the Le Mans anymore. Hope Toyota's TS030 bring in some competition to challenge the 4 rings.

the purpose of racing is to develop technology, diesel definately has its place in racing although maybe in its own series run at the same time.
Personally this interests me more than any new petrol shit; older petrol like gt40 etc then yes, but todays cars have no soul unless they burn oil.

And petrol engines had a better soul than the diesel. Just I want is an equal between diesel and petrol.

@shobin05 And? Do you really think the performance is better than driving pleasure?
Sagari90 5 months ago
@Sagari90 that doesnt even make any sense..all im saying is diesel or not its still a fast car, plus you cant buy it so whats the point of a car that makes a nice noise in a race? its not going to help you finish 1st..
shobin05 5 months ago
@shobin05 That is the stupidest argument I have ever seen. "you can't buy it so who cares if it ugly, sounds boring and is crap ?".
Duron13 4 months ago
@Duron13 im not sure what your trying to prove, but a beautiful car that sounds fantastic but finishes last in... LETS SAY, A RACE? is as useful as justin bieber..
shobin05 4 months ago
@shobin05 Well it seems that you are a stranger to the concept of passion. I won't try to explain to you if you think finish first is better than anything.
Duron13 4 months ago
@Duron13 concept of passion? haha, waw! go ask any team, ANY team involved in racing...finishing first is everyones gold, if you like finishing last so much is probably why you like to troll so much...btw, you are the one who is bringing up a pointless argument...im done here, goodbye..
shobin05 4 months ago
@shobin05
yes its a diesel.what is the pleasure is not earing this engine screeming like a fool.you can feel the torque
everytime they change speed.
i would like to be there at Le Man ,,,,
lucky guy's.

Both Audi and Peugeot have added that shark fin that is extending out from the air intake cover and it connects to the car with those "swan-neck" things...
I wonder what purpose they serve... I can see where they'd better direct air flow to the rear wing, but what's the point of the supports...
vietdude7 9 months ago
@vietdude7 IThey are there to actually adress safety issues, to prevent the cars from fliping and getting airborne while in a spin.

@SLaYD666
The noise leaving the headers of the engine is the same no matter what, but you can ONLY reduce the sound by adding a muffler or if your dumb enough to frack around with the fuel/air mixture until your engine barely turns over. Quieter car does not= better performance. the only thing that makes a car quiet is a muffler, which as i said in the previous comment... causes +manifold pressure which = BAD FOR PERFORMANCE.
lolzmastur 9 months ago
@SLaYD666
you are infact wrong, the noise you hear is an unrestricted flow of exhaust leaving the engine, the quieter the engine, the less free flowing the exhaust. which causes positive manifold pressure meaning when the exhaust tries to escape, it will only escape to a certain point and then the exhaust fumes stay inside the piston dramatically reducing the horsepower. Ive heard and seen people that have added 40+ horsepower by adding a freeflow exhaust system to their cars.
lolzmastur 9 months ago
The auto sounds like the 404 from Monthlery. The revs are limited. If you compare it with the 205
SelfTubeFreak 9 months ago
It sounds like a truck when it accelerates at 2:55
MVdesign 9 months ago
@SLaYD666 Yes, in a perfect world a 200HP car would have a much power as a Bugatti Veyron, but the fact is that electric doesn't have as much power to start with, and even if the energy loss rate is 0%, a 200HP electric would be less powerful than a 1500HP perfect world gas with an 80% energy loss rate (yes, it's that high).

the peugeot 908 and the audi R18 sound like jets!
123JFranc 9 months ago
Sounds EVIL
Mawerik024 9 months ago
loud for a diesel Le Mans car, compared to the previous 908 & Audi R10 & R15! R18 is also silent!
DannyBoySmith1993 9 months ago
@SLaYD666 The diesels have to run large particulate filters (the FAP in the Peugeot) which makes them much quieter. It's nothing to do with efficiency. Also, the order of magnitude of sound energy compared to thermal is FAR lower.
Scotracer1987 10 months ago
@Scotracer1987 Heh. Fap.
gyro231995 9 months ago
@SLaYD666 That might be one of the dumbest things i've ever heard.. So then I guess battery powered cars should dominate all forms or racing since they produce the least amount of noise
kevy213 10 months ago 8
These diesels really sound like friggin trucks! sounds cool though.

the old 908 HDI Fap is way better than 90x

@LedzeppelinBobby in what way?
gtone339 10 months ago
@gtone339 the sound of the engine and the design (with the fin)
LedzeppelinBobby 9 months ago
@LedzeppelinBobby its definietly a improvement on the new generation 908, I still like the old one though, but I like the new one instead
gtone339 9 months ago
Shame it's a flatplane and not a crossplane engine. Listen to road-car crossplane diesels like the toyota landcruiser V8 TD, audi A8 V8 TD, and ford powerstroke 6.0L V8 TD.. If these cars sounded like they did (with open exhausts mind you) NO-ONE would complain about the noise or lack of it.
joffeloff 10 months ago
Saw it at Sebring a couple weeks ago. Very distinctive sound.
jstoli996c4s 10 months ago
Honestly, the sound of a race car isn't high up on my list. The people who whinge about that are just like the people who care more for the livery of a race car than the race car itself. Not being able to "hear" the engine shouldn't automatically make the rest of it rubbish.
TheSocialistKane 10 months ago
This just proves that diesels can be proper race cars. Just listen to that! I can actually hear this Peugeot 908 diesel LMP1 downshifting! You couldn't hear that 4 years ago, let alone hear the exhaust note or the engine! That's exactly what this car is doing! They finally got it right! Bring on Le Mans!!
agtfjhdk 11 months ago
@agtfjhdk True. It's still not very racey noise though.
deggis4 11 months ago
@deggis4 To be honest, it's a bit reminiscent of the turbocharged petrol V8 LMP1 engines, only with a lower note because of lower revs. Although... if you manage to hear it, you're definitely going to recognize it.
vikirad 10 months ago
Sounds cool as the engine and turbos wind down on the way into the corner
