@SupermarketZombies I've never played this, but i did like Hybrid Heaven. It's not a great game, but it was a very different play style than any game I had played before it.
This game was pretty tough to figure out though. Once you figure out how to play, I thought the game was manageable but definitely not one of those games you can just casually play and beat. That dragon that owned Matt with fire breath isn't even that far into the game. I'm guessing Mark didn't play all the way through.
This game utilizes the limited hardware masterfully. The graphics are technically inferior, yet the game looks stunning. The art style, and perhaps in particular the lighting, not only saves it but elevates it above the norm.
@SiGhast Yea. The graphics are quasi-PS2 quality. Honestly, at this day and age PSX and PS2 don't look that much different and it's even harder to tell with this game.

It was officially called VATS in fallout 3 but the gameplay mechanics for aiming and disabling specific body parts with a percent chance to hit displayed near the limb has been around since fallout 1. Ive played fallout 1 man..

I kindly disagree. I think the roughness of 3D engines on the playstation actually works to the advantage of Vagrant Story's atmosphere. It looks more stylized and abstract. I couldn't imagine it with high-res textures, anti-aliasing, higher amount of polygons, etc.

I remember gettin so disgusted by the game just for the fact that the girlnamed dude walks and makes beep sounds with each step, that single thing pissed me off so much I couldn't play the game -_-
This is one of that really rare times when I thought "this game is much more complex than it is deep". After playing for, like, ten hours, I had spent more than half that time just in the menus (you have to switch weapons, items etc. all the fucking time). I'll probably give another chance to the game any of these days, just because its artistic direction is so nice, and the story seems better than the usual Final Fantasy formula.

This was Marc and Dave's most in depth, accurate review of the nearly 80 or so they did together in 1999-2000. Good job going into detail about the battle system. This was one of the few rpg games they reviewed also, outside of perhaps Front Mission.

@38GencFenerli Dude it's not Enix's fault that FF13 ended up like it did it, look at the Dragon Quest series before the merger they were far from linear affairs. It was the choice of the team in charge and the project leads who since Final Fantasy 7 been wanting to take the Final Fantasy Games into more "Film" like territory guess part of that means making them more narrow and linear so they can focus more on story and cut scenes.
@Evilmonkey66699 Dude, its not just FFXIII. FFXII sucked ass as well. It kept most of the FF things in it, but the gameplay was like Freddy Kruger as a stand-up comedian. That stupid! Even other games like Kingdom Hearts 2 totally changed. People moaned about the fact that KH was too hard, and then came KH2 and it was like a breeze. Beating the game blindfolded was THE challenge. All I gotta say, R.I.P. Squaresoft. They gave us the best RPG's ever!
@38GencFenerli I agree but that's not just happening to Squaresoft it's just how things are in this day and age look at say Fallout the first two were well done complex rpgs where you had to think carefully about how you picked your stats as they truly mattered yet Fallout 3 you can have low numbers in everything and still finish the game(I done that) Same can be said of TES Oblivion which had alot of features toned down or simplified from Morrowind and Daggerfall to apeal to a more casualcrowd
I've downloaded it and played it since yesterday, one tip: read the short manual ^^ So far I had a f-ing amusing time (it's wintereenmas everybody!). The combat system is something I've never seen before and the graphics aren't bothersome at all, plus the music and sound effects (with the vibration) really give me the creeps from time to time. I'm glad I spend my 6 euros on it ^^

I found Vagrant Story to be one of the most annoying games I had ever played. I got so tired of the boring gameplay that I quit playing it and never finished it.
Just disregard the reviewers attempt on humors on this game, but speaking of the actual gameplay, is just simply mind blowing. This is by far THE MOST perfect RPG game you will ever play. Sadly it was on PS1, which is a console at the era that had seen so many good games like FF:VII, FFVIII, and FFIX, etc. that this black ruby just went under noticed by many. Also, the music will prickle the back of neck and raise those hairs.
I wouldn't say the most perfect RPG but it does deserve to stand amongst them ^^ I agree on the music, I'm not through the first dungeon yet but when that Minotaur and giant walking cuirras came walking towards you I was thrilled ^^ plus the combat system really made my heart beat
@pirosoffaireyes VATS was in the original Fallout games, way before these. Vagrant story uses the same system as the earlier Parasite Eve which uses a system similar to the VATS in the ORIGINAL Fallout games.

Bought it on PSN, really fun game. My only gripe is that the game only explains the mechanics and weapon system very vaguely.
So it requires a little trial and error to know how to play the game properly.
Other then that, super fun and great story.

Vagrant Story came out in 2000. Fallout 1 was made in 1997. Vats system was created in fallout and not ripped from Vagrant Story.

@aquapendulum I know. I meant that Ivalice had not become an "official Final Fantasy world," or whatever. It had appeared in one game, a spin off tactics game that was only FF in name, really. That's all I was getting at. Smart ass.

@sethisawesome Nope, they still forgot to put Final Fantasy on the title. Even some games that are FF only in name (Dirge of Cerberus, Dissidia) have the words etched on 'em. That is no excuse.

This was Marc and Dave's most in depth, accurate review of the nearly 80 or so they did together in 1999-2000. Good job going into detail about the battle system. This was one of the few rpg games they reviewed also, outside of perhaps Front Mission.

@SolBuster Well... they where GOD to me after I played FFVIII... even while IX and XII where not perfect they where REALLY good. (I hated X and X-2) as for XIII just looks not interesting, but yeah... the graphics are phenomenal, but what do I need them for? I wand a proper world dammit... OPEN... I go where I want... and NO they did it many times in FFVII, VIII, IX... and before. Besides I want proper cities and better characters... than in XIII... they look like bunch on whiners...

Pretty much EVERY single final fantasy game,big or small,had their own set of changes/upgrades and gameplay.
Every single FF is different from the last.
People would complain if they were all the same.They gave us open world a billion times before,so they decided to head in a different direction this time.Not everyone will like it.Just like u didnt like FFX..<-open world.

@SolBuster So true. I appreciate Square working their ass off into their games, I really do! But the latest FF didn't do it for me. FFXIII is enjoyable, but it doesn't deserve the FF title, cause it looks like a complete different game. It has so many Action RPG-elements, and its so linear, it really isn't the FF we used to know. Square made the biggest mistake by joining with Enix, they were the best in their Squaresoft time...

@38GencFenerli Dude it's not Enix's fault that FF13 ended up like it did it, look at the Dragon Quest series before the merger they were far from linear affairs. It was the choice of the team in charge and the project leads who since Final Fantasy 7 been wanting to take the Final Fantasy Games into more "Film" like territory guess part of that means making them more narrow and linear so they can focus more on story and cut scenes.

@Evilmonkey66699 Dude, its not just FFXIII. FFXII sucked ass as well. It kept most of the FF things in it, but the gameplay was like Freddy Kruger as a stand-up comedian. That stupid! Even other games like Kingdom Hearts 2 totally changed. People moaned about the fact that KH was too hard, and then came KH2 and it was like a breeze. Beating the game blindfolded was THE challenge. All I gotta say, R.I.P. Squaresoft. They gave us the best RPG's ever!

@38GencFenerli I agree but that's not just happening to Squaresoft it's just how things are in this day and age look at say Fallout the first two were well done complex rpgs where you had to think carefully about how you picked your stats as they truly mattered yet Fallout 3 you can have low numbers in everything and still finish the game(I done that) Same can be said of TES Oblivion which had alot of features toned down or simplified from Morrowind and Daggerfall to apeal to a more casualcrowd

I've downloaded it and played it since yesterday, one tip: read the short manual ^^ So far I had a f-ing amusing time (it's wintereenmas everybody!). The combat system is something I've never seen before and the graphics aren't bothersome at all, plus the music and sound effects (with the vibration) really give me the creeps from time to time. I'm glad I spend my 6 euros on it ^^

I found Vagrant Story to be one of the most annoying games I had ever played. I got so tired of the boring gameplay that I quit playing it and never finished it.

Just disregard the reviewers attempt on humors on this game, but speaking of the actual gameplay, is just simply mind blowing. This is by far THE MOST perfect RPG game you will ever play. Sadly it was on PS1, which is a console at the era that had seen so many good games like FF:VII, FFVIII, and FFIX, etc. that this black ruby just went under noticed by many. Also, the music will prickle the back of neck and raise those hairs.

I wouldn't say the most perfect RPG but it does deserve to stand amongst them ^^ I agree on the music, I'm not through the first dungeon yet but when that Minotaur and giant walking cuirras came walking towards you I was thrilled ^^ plus the combat system really made my heart beat

@pirosoffaireyes VATS was in the original Fallout games, way before these. Vagrant story uses the same system as the earlier Parasite Eve which uses a system similar to the VATS in the ORIGINAL Fallout games.
