I really wonder how Veronica's mother could make herself believe that courtesans were SO valuable and so powerful. They weren't and quite honestly I wonder if Veronica's mother showed her where the courtesans end up (street life prostitution) before pimping her. Or if Veronica had to find that out for herself. I mean, the way her mother makes it sound, she makes it sound as if courtesans were perfectly safe and respected, but were playthings.
@TheNuharoo actually the courtesans were respected. and they were actully the most educated women in the world. they were in fact powerful. not only in italy, but in greece and spain as well. they were able to influence political decisions. you should research them.
