@sbamkmfdmdfmk You didn't get Keith knocking the cymbal off toward the end of the song. That part's great, and it's in the original cut. According to some interview, apparently he wanted to wreck the kit and then found out the whole thing was bolted down. I laugh every time I see him knock it off.
so fabulous.. Not words enough to describe the times and circumstances in life when this song hit. Still goosebumps after 40 years. Thanks so much for posting ! Don't get fooled again !
I was at the charlton fc gig in 76 .. bad seats at the back .. or so I thought .. man! it was fucking LOOOOOUUUUUDD! .. I remember thinking those poor bastards at the front.
This IS the definitive edit of this performance in my opinion, and I absolutely love the original "Kids Are Alright" edit which I watched about twenty times at the Tower Theater in Philly when it came out, and perhaps hundreds of times after it hit various video media... well done by The Who, and yourself!
Look, it's a really really good cut, the best yet. Except for the kneeslide. Jeff Stein's original slo-mo of Pete coming out of the dark is the most dramatic. It always bugs me that on the 'official' recut this was left out, probably just because Stein was pissed that the lighting guy missed his cue, but it's the best cut. Please try the out-of-the-dark-in-slomo cut right before 8:27.25 or so and see how it looks. Also maybe bring up John's bass at the end, you can't hear his signature end riff.
This performance is everything I love about rock & roll. It doesn't even seem cliche, just a perfect send-off for the Moon-era Who, before anything they did seemed too distant or in the past. Still in their 30s, still vital and incredibly pissed. If only Moonie was at the height of his drumming abilities still!
greatest run and slide, greatest rock scream, greatest lyrics, greatest drum bash, greatest basist and greatest kick ass band in rock history. Fans like us will never let this song fade from history, we'll just give it to our kids and they will pass it onto their grand kids. Thank you The Who for this, Quadraphenia and everything else you created, you only have one thing left to achieve - to become gods.
my brother saw the mike go flying out of Rogers grasp once and crash into speakers making a wild noise, I've heard of another where the mike went into the drums, not sure if he ever hit anyone, odds are he did with the amount of shows the did
Gotta love when Pete slices his finger 6:16 and does some quick first aid- all without missing a beat. Have to wonder what rock and roll would be like without this song and this band.
The point was to not slow-mo anything to get the feeling of speed. The original version already does that shot in slow motion anyway so it'd be redundant.
thank you sooooo much . there was a video of this same song and concert but the sound was low and dirty , and the image to. anyway used to watch i t everyday.
As performances go I don't think this was their definitve version of the song,
However, it's definitely the best filmed and recorded. And their frustration at having to play the song repeatedly comes across in excellent fashion. It's one of my favourite live videos ever.
Zebonka, you're right - this wasn't their definitive version (well, at least not Keith's). But it's probably the best professionally filmed one from the Keith era. I just caled it "definitive" since I feel that my re-editing makes the performance a bit more exciting!
Amazing recut dude. The other one out there is just as good -- except for Pete's slide and the symbol assualt/finale which are finally shown do gratitude in the rendition seen here. Truly a pinnacle moment in rock history, thanks for showing it off so well. Rock on. God bless The Who and Pete Townshend.
I'd like to do to American Idol what Townshend does to a Les Paul.

Gotta love even the most subtle occurrences of Pete and Roger trying to constantly out-do each other on stage, i.e. 4:20-4:25 DO YA?? HELL NO!!!

I read that Pete was pissed off by this because the lighting guy had fallen asleep, and came in too late during his classic slide.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
Perfect!.
