  • I'm 21 and was diagnosed type 1 this last august and I'm telling you it's so difficult to get over that mental hurdle of poking yourself. For me, seeing kids living with and dealing with this disease, only inspires me more-- if they can do it, so can I. I haven't used the pump before, but I've dealt with giving myself shots... I'm so proud of your son, a true inspiration. =) Keep up the great work!

  • I get nervous every time I insert my infusion for my pump and I'm 49 years old. I was looking on youtube for clips of inserting continous glucose monitoring systems and came across this video.

  • another outlet to share your story of having type 1 diabetes is on Diabetes Diaries! Students in Philadelphia encourage you to share an updated video! thanks!

  • I'm a grown man with Type 2 and inject myself with insulin, and I think Isaiah is braver than I cam.

  • My 9 year old daughter was just diagnosed 6 months ago and on the pump for 1 month. Isaiah is so brave even i have a hard time doing this on my daughter. (with out her knowledge of my feelings) lol

  • Please explain to the uninitiated what exactly is going on here. Is there a pump in his belly that needs refilling or what? Looks like a brave little guy.

    Aled

  • have you thought about switching to the animas ping? it is truly great and waterproof

  • Um I'm gonna go on a limb here. With the pale skin, pale hair and poor vision. Is he an ALBINO???

  • @TheSpeedyJet I agree. You can yelp in pain sometimes, and sometimes it slides in as if cutting through butter with a burning knife. This I have learned.

  • My 5 year old daughter just got her second belly site a few minutes ago and it didn't go too well. I saw this video a few weeks ago and showed it to my daughter. Though she still thinks belly sites are too scary, she enjoyed watching another kid with T1 being brave. Thanks for putting these up for both the parents to study and for the kids to relate to. Keep them coming if its possible!

  • @jesuslavex

It's great that Isaiah's video was helpful. We have a few more in the discussion phase so maybe we'll get a few more made and put up. Thanks for the note!

  • whats this

  • Omnipod isn't very good though during sports

  • @combat27117 Thank you so much for that tidbit of information. Isaiah loves to play soccer, so we'll have to keep that in mind!

  • @combat27117 I can imagine it's not, given that the patch is so bulky. I'll remember this. Thanks

  • @ callmemeg88 : is it camp jean nelson because thats where i go

  • @0oKNEXLOVERo0 it's actually Camp Needlepoint in Hudson, WI

  • I have been a type 1 diabetic for over 10 years, and I work at a diabetes camp during the summer and every year witness children using new sites for the first time and am always so proud of them when they finally gain enough courage and say "I can do this!". Your son brought a smile to my face as he overcame this hurdle! Congrats to your son and best wishes to him and your family.

  • @callmemeg88 Thank you!

  • @callmemeg88 do u work at camp garnada

  • try the emla sticker i get it for 3$ for 20 stickers it relly helps mate

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you, we will be looking into all the pumping options this summer since Isaiah is due for a new one within the next year. I'll check your videos out shortly.

  • @TheSpeedyJet whimp

  • lol....whimp!

  • @JubJubkiller09

There is absolutely NOTHING whimpy about diabetes! Your comment is inappropriate.

  • yea shut it you dummy

  • @twdobesh yeah there is like the way he made a crap load of noises and i got the omnipod today and i didnt feal anything! whimpy whimpy whimpy! HEAVTY HEAVTY HEAVTY!

  • I'm glad that your experience with the Omnipod has been great! We are considering the Omnipod for Isaiah. This video was the very first time Isaiah did an infusion set on his own. He also was terrified of needles when he was diagnosed, so this was a huge accomplishment for him. What one person finds easy or wimpy another may find challenging.

  • yea dude hes has a good reason to be scared my little sis has type 1 and she has to take the needles so u should shut it

  • wooow welldone you does really hurt on using the pupm ... please write back thankyou . rated !

  • hi! i have a different pump than he's using in the video but i use the same infusion set. i think it hurts less that when i did shots, but thats just me.. overall the pump has made my life much more convenient, i love it!

  • @dolphinjessie1

The pump doesn't hurt. The sights sting a tiny bit once in a while, but not any worse than a poke from a syringe, usually. We have found the pump to be very freeing and much easier to manage than injections.

  • thankyou for commenting back its really helpful ...... and guess what i am getting my pump ( pink animas 2020) in two weeks tie so fingers cross it goes well ! :)

  • hey i just got my diabetes pump yesterday and ive been diabetic for 10 years. i got nervous just like you and it took me for ever to squuze the button

  • @hellodawlface I still wait in suspense before I squeeze the button, and I've had a pump for almost a year.

  • I've started an online community for parents and families with kids with Type 1 Diabetes. My daughter was diagnosed at 12 months old (just 6 months ago). I hope you'll join our network to lend and gain support as well as share information, tips and experiences. maddyshope(DOT)com

  • I always do my sites on my hips/lower stomach but sometimes I psych myself out and need to count "1,2,3" in my head, haha:)

  • Im sometimes scared to,

It just don't work, it's harder than you think

    your a strong boy !!

  • How do you like the deltec cozmo? I just got the minimed a few days ago, but I haven't started using it yet. Didn't they discontinue the cozmo?

  • Sadly, yes, they discontinued the Cozmo! It is a great pump with great feature. We will be having to decide on a new maker in about a year or so. I hope you have great success with your pump start up! I can't imagine managing diabetes without one now!

  • Thanks! Good luck with finding a new pump.

  • whatever you do keep asking your doc to check ya blood cos im 18yo and i was 3 1/2 times the maximum blood sugar when i found out . i was 12yo and now my feet have lost some feeling. dont leave it cos you feel ok. when in hyper i dont know unless i check. good luck.

  • what kind of pump does he use? it sounds like the omni pod when it clicks. does it hurt considerably?

  • i am not diabetic, but i have all 11 sympoms of it.

my docor told me to get my mates metre, and if its over 11 to go and seehim, but im worrie if it hurts, im not a wmp, but i never had on before, so i just want an answer.

  • Did your doctor do a test to see what your A1C was? I'm not sure what 11 equals on our US meters. The needle pokes don't hurt more than a tiny pinch, but it can take a toll on you psychologically. I think if you have 11 symptoms you need to be seen by your doctor and have it ruled out and not rely on your mate's metre to check on occasion!

  • 11 in uk is quite high.

and okay ill see what he says

  • oh by the way.

if i knew what an a1c was i might answer lol

  • His "11" may well be in the MMOL scale, which converts to 198 on mg/dl.

  • If this is MMOL scale, outside the USA, then 11=198 mg/dl. That's high, in my book. I am T-2, 42 years old; for 3 years. I was recently "demoted" to 'abnormal glucose tolerance'. With a reading of 200, if that is the case, or even if A1C is 11, I would see another doctor at ONCE! This is too high.

  • it dont matter now im type 1 lol

  • Good job little man! Keep up the good work. I know it's not easy at first, but after a while it will be no big deal. I've been using an insulin pump for about 5 years now and I really like it. I use belly sites all the time. I've been diabetic since I was 6 years old. I'm 50 now. By the time you're my age who knows what great technology ther might be.

  • Thanks for the encouragement, I'll be sure that Isaiah reads your comments! I pray that by the time Isaiah hits 50 they'll have a cure and know what causes it so it can be stopped all together, hopefully! Thanks again for your kind words!

  • Diabetics kids are the strongest, bravest people I know!!! I am going to share this with my 5 y/o son who is on the pump but has not had a belly site...yet. Thanks!!!

  • I'm so happy this video will inspire your son!! Tell him good luck on his belly site try!! Blessings

  • DUDE UR PUMP IS HUUUUUUGE,

  • His pump looks larger than normal because it has the meter attached to the back. He no longer has the meter attached because he wears the Navigator CGMS and checks his bg on that instead.

  • minimed is better than that pump LONG LIVE MINIMED

  • It is all in what you need & want in a pump. I've not once downed any other pump. Minimed didn't offer the type of infusion sets we felt best for Isaiah & we didn't like the idea of their proprietary system; all have their pros & cons. I make no apologies for being proud of my son wearing the Deltec Cozmore pump and neither would he. This video was made to inspire other children who have to do infusion set insertions, or adults for that matter, & not really about the make of pump he wears.

  • my aunt usees the OmniPod and she loves it.

  • That's great! I'm glad she has found a pump that works for her and her needs. Take care.

  • awesome im happy that he can do it on his own now i just started on a pump not long ago and im thrilled about it im 13 and have had diabetes since i was 7 hated those shots like i said awesome and congrats

  • Thank you and congrats on your pump start!

  • Great job Isaiah i was kinda nervous to stick it in my belly to it use to hurt alot i have sensitive skin too so thats prolly why but does your son like the cozmore insulin pump??

  • Congrats... I have had it since freaking around 9/28/1999 and I'm turning 13 this year in about 3 weeks... this is going to be my 10th year, I am happy to see that such a young kid has the courage to do that, it's quite amazing... when I did the first Demo with water I was leaning over on a table for about 20 min. due the huge pain you get in the torso area...

  • bless his heart.

i am getting ready to start insulin pump therapy, and am just trying to get more info on it, because i am afraid. i am 38 years old and here is this young man taking matters into his own hand! i'm very impressed. good job! :)

  • Good for you! I hope you enjoy the pump as much as we do! It is definitely work, but well worth the work!! It can get very frustrating when the ratios aren't set quite right, but the book "Pumping Insulin" should be a huge help to you! I wish you much success in your pump start up and therapy and pray it goes well for you!

  • I don't have diabetes but may i ask you what is a infusion set? I am 10 yrs old.I just had my tonsils out 3 weeks ago. It hurt a lot at night though. But good luck! with the pump or what ever that thing is called

  • The infusion set is like what you had in the hospital, which was placed in a vein probably in your arm somewhere, it gave you fluids and they may have put medicine in the tube as well. The only difference is the infusion set doesn't go into a vein it goes into any any area of the body that has a little bit of fat. The tubing connected to the infusion set delivers a tiny drop of insulin every 3 minutes. The needle that places the inset in his body is very tiny and rarely hurts.

  • !!

    I have the same pump.

    What infusion set is that?

I use the cleo, its pretty good and safer than the ones going in an angle. The only thing about the cleo is that it could rip off later easy. i hate putting the infusion in my belly. IT HURTS LIKE HELL.

I've had the pump for like... 5 years now... and its the best. BUT... i hope the cure comes up soon because needles are just torture.

  • Isaiah uses the 23inch/6mm Animas Insets which are a straight in cannula and you can get them in different mm lengths for the cannula and different tubing lengths as well.

  • Kendall has been hooked up to the pump for about a month now and her numbers are finally where they need to be for the 1st time sence diagnosed. Its wonderful. she is even going back to school after being homeschooled because of her unstable and hard to treat condition. Things are really looking up. Thanks again for the info it was invaluable. I hope Isiah is doing well and had a great summer. much love..lee

  • Awesome!! Tell Kendall and family great job, I knew they could do it. It just takes some learning and stick-to-it-ness! I'm so happy that Kendall's life can get back to how she liked it before being dx'd. Blessing to you!

  • I have had the animas 2020 now for 2 weeks. I have had some problems with the infusion set. I called animas and was told to stand up when using the quick set to the site I want. It has made inserting the cannula, cathiter much easier with less pain.

  • Great video! It makes me more confident to do my own infusion sets from now on and I have the same set as Isaiah too. I have been on the pump for 5 years now, i'm 18 now but diagnosed at 12. My mom always put the set in for me since I was too scared to do it myself. Now that i'm going on a trip that my parents can't go on, I put the set in for the first time myself yesterday & I was sweating w/ nerves! I was surprised by how hard you had to push the spring to release the site.

  • Great job! I'm so thankful that Isaiah's video can help out others dealing with diabetes. Keep up the great work!

  • I was wondering how long he usually keeps his sites in? My endo suggested 2 days, but I think that is too short so I usually keep it in for 4 days.

  • Most endos suggest 2 days, some suggest 3 days. I think as long as you are seeing good bg readings you are okay for 3-4 days. We tend to see a rise in bg when Isaiah pushes past the 3 day mark. I'm so proud of you that you are asking questions and taking on more of the responsibility of your site changes, it is extremely hard! Good Job!

  • I give you lots of credit I have been type 1 since i was 17, and i still dont have a pump but after watching that i my just go and get one, thanks :)

  • You are welcome, so glad Isaiah's video could encourage you. If you are willing to learn how a pump operates then I think you'll wish you'd switched sooner! A great book to buy is "Pumping Insulin" by John Walsh!

  • Good work matey. I've had diabetes type 1 for 15 years now! I reckon, when putting the cannula in, rather than get nervous and tense up, just relax and take the risk. You're just like me, skinny and muscles are close to the skin. When you tense, your muscles are hardened and therefore closer to the skin, creating a more likely failure of insertion. Good luck buddy

  • God bless you nad keep you healthy until your a very old man, Isaiah! My son has the same name as you nd I am a type 1 like you are. I was diagnosed 9 years ago and have been on an insulin pump a little over two years now.

I love it and hate it sometimes...I cry sometimes too. You should be so proud of yourself and remember that it is okay to get sad sometimes

  • i've been a diabetic for 7 months now, and i was just wondering... when you press the button, does the needle that goes in to insert the cannula hurt more than the needle on an insulin syringe?

  • 99 percent of the time Isaiah doesn't feel the insertion at all! Only if it nicks a nerve or blood vessel does it hurt. We know when that happens, we have to remove the site and put a new one in because it hurts even after it is in place and the site is a lot more likely to fail. My husband and I have both tried out the sites to see if they hurt and I can honestly say you don't feel it! The needle is much thinner.

  • Cheers to you lill buddy. Ive been pumping sence August 2001 and it never gets any easier. I love using my tummy, legs, and butt. First few times you do it its nerve racking but it becomes easier. Keep on plugging and you'll be fine.

  • Isaiah you're so brave!!!

I may not be diabetic, but both of my parents are [they think i am as well] but I would have never had the courage to do this!!!!!

    good job!! <3

  • Isaia YOU ARE SO BRAVE ! My grand daughter Kendall who is blond and beautiful just like you was diagnosed with type 1 over 2 years ago and her dr wouldnt let her get a pump. Then she then went to the Joslin Clinic in Boston and the drs there said she has a rare insuline reisitant diabetes and the pump will help because at 8 yrs old she requires twice an adult dosage to keep her levels under 300. seeing your video I know she can do it to. you are an inspitration Isiah. much love 2 U kiddo.

  • I'm so happy to hear your grand daughter was allowed to have a pump!! It really does change children's lives who have to live day in and day out with type 1 diabetes! I never understood why doctors say no if the parents show they are willing and able to handle the responsibilities of the pump.

  • It's never easy. Her 1st dr said no pump unless stabilized. He didnt know she will never be stabilized because shes insuline reisitant. She is SO looking forward to the pump.Kind of sad when you think about it huh? I showed her and her mom Isaiah's video yesterday they were impressed. She said "He is a really brave boy grandma." Her mom was glad to see it too. The newness of the pump is scary but we will get used to that too. The video helped greatly. Thanks for sharing, keep smiling Isiah and Mom

  • It is sad that they get excited about getting the insulin pump, I had the same sad thoughts when we were waiting for Isaiah's pump to arrive. However, it is also awesome that we have it as an option for our children. As far as I'm concerned, any child who has a hard time getting regulated and has proven they are truly trying shouldn't be banned from trying the pump! Diabetes isn't like a lot of disease where it responds the same way to the same situations, the doctors should know that most!

  • Kendall will be hooked up to her 1st pump within the hour.We are awaiting the arrival of the DME Rep.She is very excited her Mom and I are feeling nervous about it all after being so wrapped up in her care for 2 years we are feeling reluctant to hand over her life and that responsibility to a machine.I am sure we will get used to it.Its just cold feet and last minute jitters.Isaiahs video has helped and Kendall is determined to put in the site all by herself starting right away today.

  • That is awesome! Oh, trust me you will still be doing a lot, especially in the beginning as you get her basal rates and i:c ratios set just right, but is will be so worth it in the end. It may take a month or two before it is all smoothed out so just keep pressing forward even during frustrating days, it will definitely be worth it in the end!

  • Thanks so much for always offering comforting answers. The DME nurse had a pump and was full of helpfull tips and info.We are already feeling better about it.Kendall was not allowed to do the 1st canula site Because her mom had to learn to do it.She is looking forward to applying the new one Friday. She told the nurse about Isiah.Kendall went to bed tonight with a smile on her face and a pump on her hip.She has the one that can be hooked up to the continous blood glucose moniter in the future.

  • Just saw this for the first time!! Way to go Isaiah!!!!! Michelle (and Ian)

  • Hey Michelle and Ian! Thanks for stopping by! We plan to make another video on carb factors, so when we get it posted we'll let you know.

  • yeah i have a hard time with belly also so i have my mom click it

  • I started wearing it on my stomach because ive been getting crazy highs on my upper butox region. Its so much easer to sleep when its on the stomach. Great vid

  • I didn't put my sites in my stomach for at least a year after I started pumping, especially since I never did my shots there. I probably took 20 minutes trying to make myself push the button.. good job!

  • I'm so glad you posted this! I have only ever done my stomach and am scared to try another site... Isaiah touched my heart, what a sweet little fella, keep up the good work!

  • Congarts i hae type one to and i have the same pump as you but mine is purple i was nervous doing my stomach at first to

  • great job isaiah! i just got my cozmo pump its my first pump ever i got it a week ago. i have had t1 for 3 years.

  • Good for you, Isaiah! And good for Mom for trying it out to see what it's like :-)

  • I need to get a pump. I am thirteen and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 3 months ago. I'm still using syringes and the doctors say they don't want me on a pump until 6 months after my diagnosis.

  • Falubii, I'm sorry to hear you were diagnosed with T1! Isaiah's first doctor felt the same way, and so we decided to switch doctors so that he could switch to the pump sooner! I don't regret switching doctors at all! You should read everything you can about pumping, like the books "Pumping Insulin" and "Think Like a Pancreas" and get as educated as possible, then tell your doctor you are ready now! Today is Isaiah's 1 year pump anniversary and he wouldn't give up his pump for anything!

  • Well done Isaiah! My 6 year old son Aidan just moved to the pump 1 week ago and he is still having trouble with a LOT of anxiety with the site changes...I will be sure to show him your video. You are a rock star!

  • Hey, thanks for posting this. My 1 year old was dx w/Type 1 on 12/13/07, and we're really seriously thinking about going on a pump soon. Mind if I ask which pump you're using?

  • Isaiah is using the Deltec Cozmo 1800 insulin pump. We love it because the meter is attached right to the back, so it is one less thing to carry. However, there are several other options, and they are all great. I highly recommend looking at all of them and then deciding on which one is right for you. With a 1 year old Animas would be a great option because it offers the smallest amount of delivery. Good luck, and I hope you are pumping soon, esp. with a 1 year old!

  • Hey, congrats, Isaiah.

I have the same kind of medicalert bracelet as you.

I don't do shots in my stomache, but I do them in my side- for me it hurts less.

  • Well done! I'm hoping to get a pump sometime soonish, and watching clips of set inserting is definitely making it less scary.

  • Isaiah absolutely loves his pump and would die if we took it away from him! His A1C is much better and has a lot more freedom! I've tried a site to see how it would feel, and I didn't feel a thing when it was going in. Good luck! Isaiah's Mommy
