I'm 33 now and too young to have witnessed them back in the early days, but GOD, this band has influenced me as a musician!!!! I love the complexity of the songs, combined with sheer power and dedication! As a threesome, they're AMAZING!!!
I'm happy I still own the first 3 albums and all singles on vinyl and to listen to Raven the way I should
Actually I've played in a Raven tributeband called Wiped Out, we've done some shows 2000's! Also played the famous Dynamo club in Eindhoven, Holland!
@Dethtildeath Indeed! As one whot got to see them back in the day (1983 on the Kill Em' All For One Tour with Metallica) I have to say that yes, for a 3 piece, they are amazing.
Mark is able to go from rhythym to melody in a split second, and always seems to be right on the spot when it comes time to change from one to the other. And the sound he gets out a an old Telecaster is equally amazing. Not too many folk can do that!
Diamond Head were probably the best band NOT to make it big time (in my opinion), but on pure record sales alone.....i'd have to say that i think Def Leppard and Judas Priest turned out to be the most successful bands of the N.W.O.B.H.M. era.
@SonRegal yeah, perhaps realistically NWOBHM should only apply to the less well known (struggling for recognition) newer bands, but it was only in 78 that PRIEST started really getting into the leather/bike image and the term METAL began appearing. If you see PRIEST before that they were dressed more like FLEETWOOD MAC. I think PRIEST and MAIDEN helped kick started the whole rock/metal scene again and any rock bands around at that time deserve to be classed as part of the NWOBHM process.
@nevermore300 Priest pioneered that leather look, and since when was it the New Fashion of British Heavy Metal? who cares what priest was wearing, they could be dressed like the Grateful Dead but you cant deny Sad Wings of Destiny wasnt a metal album
So underrated band and a legendary one. They crushed real hard for that time before Metallica and thrash bands began to appear , they should deserved more attention.
No matter what timeline or what label has been placed on Raven, one thing is for sure..these guys know how to do it and they are still making good on the promise to Rock Until You Drop.
To this day, they still perform with an amount of energy that shames younger bands, and God only knows they'll STILL be doing it at the turn of the next century, LOL
The band themselves actually agree with you DEATHnHATRED, they insisted they weren't metal but 'athletic rock', just about every interview they ever did mentions that. It was the press and the fans that lumped them in as nwobhm. It's important to understand though that the commonly understood idea of what is and is not heavy metal has moved on since the beginning of the 80s, Raven's debut album came out right before Venom's on the same label. Ever heard Judas Priest's early material?
Exactly, even when I was getting into metal in 85/86 everything from Mountain to Master was considered heavy metal, its all about the riffs, the power and the intensity. Doesnt matter what you call it, it still rules!
amazing he get's such a heavy sound out of a shitty Telecaster with a single coil pickup...the most unmetal guitar ever...and the 8 string bass is very Spinal Tap!
Yes progjazzfusion..Mark was amazing..to witness them at Wrexham Football Ground was awesome.but seeing them at a Working Men's Club in Worcester when John ran up to the audience and rubbed his bass on this guy's head and Rob is nutting the cymbals with a skateboard helmet on !!!! With all of your might ,,let the hammer fall !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Raven just flat-out rocks. Everytime I listen to "Seek And Destroy," I get moist. I'm not really sure *how* I get moist, because I'm not a girl... but I guess that just goes to show ya how powerful this band was.
i always liked the little reggae twist they put in at 2:16
I would have liked to see them live back then in a small club. only problem was that i'm in the US and was like 10yrs old then so couldnt get in anyways.
@JohnGallagherRaven Hi John i remember seeing raven at exhibition park about 30 yrs ago still have a copy of don't want your money somewhere in the house glad to see still going stong.

Raven were the FIRST thrash band and always played full speed ahead. Enjoyed seeing you when i lived in London in the late 70's and early 80's.
