I've watched this a couple of times before and I've only just noticed the little tracker at the bottom showing how he's travelling throughout the song!
This is the song through which I discovered the Divine Comedy, when listening to XFM as I drove home to Muswell Hill from the Tuesday evening group in Dulwich.
Few comments on here about why DC have never made it as big as they deserve. I've liked DC for at least ten years now, but can't claim to love them for two reasons. 1.Neil Hannon just sounds too lounge singer too often. 2.There are too many 'knowing nods' and 'in jokes' for me to take it seriously enough to love it. That said he is a fecking genius. But no Morrissey. Soz.
Anyone remotely interested in The Divine Comedys masterful body of work must check out the obscenely excellent "Live at the Palladium" from a few years back. A beautiful insight into the musical mind of Neil Hannon. Also, the extended version of "A Short Album About Love" ranks high in my all time favourite list. For me, Neil Hannon is the biggest musical genious to hail from the British isles since Morrissey at his absolute peak. In my book there is no greater compliment.
March 22nd, 2004. anyone that claims to love this song is automatically (in my humble opinion) in the 'real' music connoisseur category. its absolutely brilliant.
This is the first DC track I ever heard back in the days when RADIO 1 played DC! Fell in love immediately and have never turned back!
Agree with the XTC reference, Hannon and Partridge are two very similar guys, although Neil has the upper hand in the classical stakes while Andy is capible of lush, whimsical studio recordings.
The world as viewed through the eyes of the seminal pop pilgrim. Hannons lyrics are evocative of XTC at their incisive best, while the idiosyncrasies of the lush melody, usurp comprehensively those pretenders to the throne, the Crash Test Dummies. Don't you just wish you could backpack around Europe with the writer of this?
As an international traveler I completely relate to this tune. But on top of it, Neil and Divine Comedy are the most under-rated group out there. Like no one else, and not just a next-generation Scott Walker. He is a unique, dear talent. Funny, moving and prevocative all at the same time. Absent Friends was his masterpiece.
I agree, there seems to be some missing link as to why he hasn't reached world status yet, he's been going for feckin' ages. I think he could land something if he allowed some of his stuff to be used in films etc, to me alot of it has always sounded like it should be. Ah well, he'll always be one of the best musics Ireland produced- proud of him.

A classic that I'll still listen to in a decade. One can't help being in a good mood with such a song.

@Moonsmoonsen
What´s with the British Isles thing? He´s IRISH. Oh, and it´s Derry, not Londonderry for the record.
