what i want to know is why he's playing the blues! seems like a bit of misrepresentation to me, especially since plenty of people who've seen this movie (i'm willing to bet) aren't too familiar with his music
@MrFatmaninbearsuit Apparently you aren't too familiar with Bruce. He plays quite a bit of blues in his songs. Have you heard A Night with the Jersey Devil or Valentine's Day? A lot of his songs are blues based.
@UseMeAbuseMe4Ever I've only heard a handful of songs Bruce has done that could be considered bluesy, Valentine's Day included. I'm just surprised because I feel like Bruce is most well-known for his poppy piano-driven stuff with the E Street Band, which is more influenced by Roy Orbison and the Beatles than blues music or traditional rock n roll. And even when he's just strumming an acoustic guitar it's usually not blues-sounding but folky, like Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger.
@MrFatmaninbearsuit Yes, you would be correct about the poppy-piano stuff at least commercially, but the deeper you dig the more you realize that he has many types of music that are his influences. But you are very correct when you say Roy Orbison and the Beatles. I believe those to be a major influence for him, but he has rarely let the standards get in his way of making some really great music otherwise. Check out some more B-sides and you might be quite surprised. Enjoy!
@MrFatmaninbearsuit Any rock and roll guy needs to know blues. It's where the music came from. That's why bands right now don't sound like the guys in the 60's and 70's, they liked rock and roll, then out came blink 182 and fall out boy (i'm not comparing the two). But if you want to hear blues based Springsteen, search for "springsteen seeds hyde park" and "reason to believe magic tour".
@bustedup The closest he's done to something like that is Night Of The Jersey Devil. It's not on any album (he recorded it for a Halloween thing)...just Google for it...it's not on youtube either, but it's in other places :)
He isn't the boss of anything, he's just The Boss. Bruce himself has stated he doesn't like the whole idea of bosses deciding things for other people, which is why he initially didn't appreciate the title given to him, but since the meaning of his title is different from that of a typical boss at work, he now likes it.
Think more a boss in a video game, he's big in the sense that he's powerful at what he does (which is music). :)
@Luthicwoot Actually he got the title "The Boss" because he used to divy up the band's pay at the end of the night whenever they were finished playing a gig. No more no less.
ARGH, I wish I'd been born a few years ago... Then I would've been born into a good music-generation who did NOT listen to Britney and Rihanna, and straight into the glory of this sexy, awesome, funny and sweet most talented musician in the world... Ah, well. A few teenage Bruce fans out there hear my call, right? XD
Anyway, thanks for posting this! Did anyone else notice that little Bobby Jean-reference? "Good luck, goodbye..." "Good lucky, goodbye, Bobby Jean."
You've just articulated all my feelings! I'm nearly 18, but in school I feel like some out of touch relic when I say I love the Boss! Nice to know that there's some people out there who get what real music is. In fifty years, the trashy, synth lipsync pop that has come to define our generation will be dead and buried, but people will still consider Springsteen as one of the immortals. Peace.
Many people forget that what we consider to be "trash music" these years, was what many people considered to be Disco back in the 70s. Maybe in 10 years U.S. Cellular Field can have another Demolition Night, only this time we can throw the Auto-Tune in there with all our records.
may we all pray for britney spears, justin timberlake, lady gaga, the pussycat dolls, good charlote etc. to all one day take their rightful place in the black hole that is the discount disco bin within your local cd store
i tell u what man, im guessing your american, sorry if im wrong, but im from england and im feeling the same problem and on several occasions have attempted to educate my friends to The Boss often with no luck but we have to keep trying dont we?
I totally agree. As a 17-year-old borderline-obsessed Springsteen fan, I've given up on getting my friends to see the light. Somehow, my best friend was unmoved by Jungleland, which doesn't seem possible.
However, I agree with kyle4thenight: all time periods have their shit music. Time has been kind enough to weed out the old crap for us.
exactly my sentiment when it comes to old music as far as time weeding out the crap. and yes your friend is not human and should not be consorted with if he is untoched by jungleland
Dude, i'm 21 and my room mates do not understand my love for Springsteen's music. He inspired me to pick it up and I hope to make a career out of it. I understand where you're coming from.
Now, I have no musical ability, the fact that i've gotten good at the guitar is a mystery to me, but the Jungleland sax solo makes we want to learn the horn. I would be blessed if I could write one song half as good, and that song is just one of his many masterpieces.
mate, i'm italian, i'm 25 and i'm Bruce's fan since 12 years. And if once I was explaining my love for Bruce to other people, now i've stopped to try it. I think that you can understand Bruce (his music, his words) right now or never. So don't worry if your room mates dont understand your love for Bruce, they will NEVER understand
Yeah, but I feel like I should at least try you know? I see a kind of nobility in his music that my friends would benefit from. His not a guy that's out there trying to get famous, he's a guy out there that loves music, and has his own ideas about the way things should be, and he uses music to describe that. I see his message in his music, and it frustrates me that my friends just think I'm a fanatic and can't see that there is a nobility in his music that isn't in current music
Thanks for the songs Boss. They're so achingly beautiful that they both break and heal my heart. One of the last soldiers in the fight for real music.
Bruce Springsteen is so talented! He sings and plays his instruments very well, he's kind, nice, sweet and gorgeous and he can act! I LOVE YOU BOSS<333
I absolutely LOVE this movie! John Cusack is just a fab actor and well Bruce...not only can he write, compose and sing but he also gives good advice, doesn't he?
GREAT BRUCE VIDEO!! I have a teen-oriented, hockey themed book coming out in October which has over 25 Bruce song and characters from Bruce songs, references (the hockey team is named the Magic Rats, the lead character plays hockey "undeneath Abrams Bridge" etc)!!
