you know you don't have to get a B3-- i've been finding M3's and L111's and similar organs on C-list for under 500. M3 is a good one, b'kuz it's got the presets and drawbars, its very similar to a B3 (but a bit smaller!) in fact, the M3 i prefer more than B3-- a B3 is a bit too much for me at this point (i play a C3-- identical to a B-- in church). just a rule of thumb if u r looking for a good hammond-- look for models before 1975, tone-wheel types, and drawbars. ive a couple under 300.
@TheNorthernSoulKing Try looking for an A100. It's the same as a B3 or C3 but they're usually easier to find, cheaper, and in better condition. It just has build-in speakers so it's heavier, but it's actually more compact than a B3. All the same sound and features.
Hello you are a great organist. I was wondering where would I be able to find a Hammond organ B3 for sale? Would I be able to find any under a 1,000 or a 1,000? I live in Ohio and also what would I look up to see if they sell Hammonds in my state?
@TheNorthernSoulKing I have seen them for around 3 grand, for a B3, sometimes a bit less but not much.
Too bad your not closer to me in California, I have a Hammond M from 1964 I would like to get rid of, it was my mothers, she bought it new, cost her 2 grand in 1964. They were not cheap even then
my father played professionally for 50 years, and used to have a b3 and an a-100 and we used to have to haul those heavy bastards from gig to gig.i would give anything to hear him on one now(he is 85 and still plays piano)
YALL CAT'S CRAZY MANLOL!!! I AM A JIMMY SMITH FAN and a jazz organist if u didnt see jimmy live u missed the best part of jimmy smith seeing that man close up was a honor ture king of showman ship! r.i.p jimmy smith new vintage trio
Well, let's just ask Joey D about that? He is probably the biggest Jimmy Smith fan next to me. When all else fails, try playing a pentatonic or 2. Runs are for the musicians, pents are for the average listener.

Well, it makes me sick too people vote me down of sharing my opinion. I've heard the Jimmy Smith-style so much (including from other players) it gets super predictable. Ofcourse Jimmy made it popular and introduced 888~ with 3rd harmonic. And I don't want "it sounds good" I want some technique too and I wanna say when I listen to a cat "How the hell does he do that, He's completely of the scale but it sounds so darn well"
Its the popularity factor, you gave an honest opinion which alot of people dont like so they thumbs down you.
people take other peoples personal opinions and things they say far too seriously. It aint fair an it aint ever gonna be too, individuals are intelligent, but, people are dumb.
"888" is the draw-bar registration. First 3 draw-bars are pulled out all the way (to 8) and the rest of the draw-bars are left untouched. 3rd percussion added as well - classic Jimmy Smith sound on the Hammond console organ.
HammondB200 the only reason you even like jazz organ is because of Jimmy Smith!!! Jimmy Smith made Jazz organ popular. Cat's like you kill me with all he uses is Pentatonic scales or whole tone. What difference does it make as long as it sounds good? You probably don't even play well anyway which is the case most of the time with people who type nonsense like what you typed!
My re at: "You probably don't even play well anyway which is the case most of the time with people who type nonsense like what you typed!" People who ain't understand the theory can be good in practical playing.
well, Jimmy Smith Pretty much Created the sound,, all others are imulating him,,,building on what he already created! Its like,, Henri Ford didnt didnt Build the F150 truck himself,,, but he did invent the automobile.. There was many inovations after him,, but he started the ball rolling! The Concept,, i think ;-)
Ofcourse he invented everything, and everybody bases their style on his famous 888~ with 3rd percussive. But I heard it so much (incl. from other jazz-organists) it becomes extremely predictable. With me it isn't just it sounds good I want technique and say "How the hell does he do that"

I actually DO like Jimmy style. I think its great the way he uses 888/3rd and still manages to swing everytime.
But, I also understand your point. Altough is tough to argue about musical taste.
My advice... just start learning how to play what you want to listen to.
And good luck! Originality is great... always!

Could you elaborate "888?" Is that octaves movement or am I reading wrong?
